  • Excellent Radar Detector
Style: Detector
I bought this detector for a cross-country drive from Florida to California. It performed brilliantly, identifying every speed trap along the way in plenty of time for me to adjust my driving accordingly. It also alerted me to speed and red light cameras. In short, it more than paid for itself in saved tickets. It does give false hits on the K band (especially within city limits), but that's to be expected from any detector. I can't recommend it highly enough. ... show more

  • Great Purchase - Even for first time users
Style: Detector
Just to start this off I wanted to say that this is my first radar detector so I do not have any knowledge in comparison to other brands/models. With that being said, I have had a great experience in the 18 months I’ve owned this detector. It works very well, picking up both k & ka band for up to miles away on the freeways and a very generous distance during city driving. The laser feature also works very well and is a tone that quickly gets your attention. This device is also very user friendly/simple to use. I learned all of the features within the first week and let me tell you - the mute memory feature is a life saver with the constant K band interference you are bound to run into. I always have left my detector on Highway mode (I understand this is the most sensitive mode) and I can confidently say that this detector has saved me from multiple tickets (especially the sneaky speed vans/motorcycle cops in town). Also the build quality of this thing is no joke. Not a single button has began to wear out and everything feels just as solid as it did day 1. This is with it having been in my front windshield (exposed to both OR & AZ seasons) every day of ownership. It has fit well in multiple of my vehicles and the only draws I could possibly come up with is that occasionally I have to remount the suction cup due to changes in temperature overnight as well as some passengers having called it annoying (I’m sure they’d say the same about any radar detector). With that being said, I forget it’s there most of the time and it’s simply become a part of my alertness while driving. Great product with no issues thus far. I recommend this to all friends and family. ... show more

  • Great Radar Detector
Style: Detector
This is my first radar detector, so I had to do some research online before buying. After 1 week I absolutely love this radar detector. The R3 performs extremely well IMO. Initial alerts chirp slowly. Chirps get faster as you get closer to the source. When the chirps hit a solid tone you can usually figure out the location of the source. IMO there's a sufficient amount of time from the first alert chirp to the steady tone to allow you to check your speed. You can set different tones for different bands of radar which is super helpful too. There are lots of settings that can be adjusted which is nice, but it also means that it will take some time to familiarize yourself with the detector. The best feature IMO is the GPS which allows me to flag spots with known false alerts by pressing "mute" twice, so that the detector doesn't alarm at that spot. The suction cup mounting bracket is well designed. I can mount it quickly and release it quickly with a press of a button. I wish it came with a hard wire install kit though because the worst feature is the included power. It's the standard coiled wire that plugs into the 12v cig lighter. It's just not aesthetically pleasing to have a power cord hanging in the middle of the windshield. ... show more

  • Well Worth the Price!
Style: Detector
Had a Escort for about 4 years which I had no complaints about except the fact that it would lag when getting readings. This radar detector picks up everything effortlessly. You can even pick different sounds for different detections which makes it more customizable for each person.

  • Decent detector, but must be set up properly to maximize effectiveness
Style: Detector
Overall this is a strong detector that performs its intended function well. However, there are a few things that you need to do in order to maximize its capabilities. The first and most nuanced is going through all of the settings and tailoring them to the area(s) you'll be driving in. This is a very technical step which will require research if you are inexperienced in using a detector (which I was...and maybe still am). You'll also need to mount the device properly, i.e. as high up on your windshield as possible. There is a noticeable difference between mounting it low on the windshield and higher up near the rear view mirror. If you want to mount it higher up (recommended), the "discreet" double-suction cup that is provided is nearly useless. Its grip is not strong at all and more importantly the vibrations from your vehicle will almost assuredly knock the device off the glass. Potentially my biggest gripe though is with the power cord. This is one of the most inefficient, antiquated electronic objects I have ever seen. For all the technology that is packed into the device itself, the fact that the power cord uses an old telephone jack-style connector is absolutely mind blowing. When I first purchased the detector, I obviously wanted to hide the device when my car was parked, so I had to disconnect it from the power cord. The problem with the cord is that its design is not intended for perpetual plugging and unplugging and, predictably, a piece of the connector broke off after only a month, creating a very unstable connection with the detector. I now have it wrapped in electric tape just to hold the cord in place, and even with that the connection is spotty at best; I find that I constantly have to fidget with it to keep the device on. Most shockingly, in the world of overpriced accessories that we live in, Uniden does not sell a replacement power cord. How this is possible, I have no idea. Two other complaints with its features: the "marking" system does not seem to function the way I think it should. I have marked several locations near stores with automatic doors and the device, while alerting me that a tagged location is approaching, still beeps like crazy as I pass by. Also, the max speed feature is useless. Unfortunately, the max speed alert trumps an actual detection alert, as I recently experienced while passing a cop (detection alert did not start until I dropped below my max speed). Thankfully the cop cut me a break, but this should have been avoided had the alerts been prioritized in a more logical order. Again, this is a fine device but you'll need to put in some effort to get your money's worth. ... show more
