  • much nicer than my last weather radio
Color: Red
My last weather radio was about two decades old, so it was time to replace it and when i saw this one on sale on Black Friday, i decided to order it for myself. I haven't needed it yet, but I did test it out a few times to be sure it will work when i need it and I'm very pleased. Unlike my previous weather radio, this one is a full AM/FM radio and it picks up several local music stations just as well as it picks up the weather band. Even without the antenna raised, it gets pretty good reception indoors, and the reception is even better near a window or with the antenna raised. It's not super high-fidelity or anything, but you can definitely hear everything that's being broadcast without any kind of serious distortions beyond the little static that all manual radios have. It seems to charge very well just from the light of my desk-side lamp and I tested the crank-charge function right out of the box. Just a few seconds of cranking gave me enough power to listen to the radio for several minutes (it probably would have continued to work for longer, but by then I was satisfied and sick of listening to the automated voice), and it doesn't take too much force to crank it up, so it shouldn't be too difficult even for people with arthritis in the hands like i have. The USB ports seem to be working well, too, so plenty of ways to keep it charged. The crank and antenna both collapse when not in use to avoid accidental damage and snagging on things if you're shuffling around with it in the dark. The flashlight isn't the brightest you'll ever seen, but it's strong enough to make it easy to find your way in the dark, and the button to turn on the flashlight is very easy to find by touch. It's not overly heavy but is definitely very solidly-built and seems very sturdy overall. I don't have any complaints and I'm pretty sure this will still be serving me well a decade or two from now. ... show more

  • Functional & Affordable
Color: Red
This is my first product from this manufacturer but third one of these overall. My others are by the Red Cross. Thankfully, I have not had to use this in an actual emergency situation or for a prolonged amount of time but from my testing it appears it will perform as intended. The hand crank seems to produce the amount of charge expected from one of these multipurpose units. The solar charge also seems decent. It's been cloudy so I imagine there is room for improvement when the weather gets better but a little red light will indicate when charging. The flashlight gives off good, bright light. It is not a wide beam of light - pretty concentrated on the immediate area you're pointing at but the light and nice and bright white not yellow or dim. The only weakness in my opinion is the radio. First, the tuner is not digital. The knob and frequency "slide" gauge are very small so it's a little tricky where radio stations are nearby each other. Also, it struggles to get any clear reception without using the antenna which is the old style piece of metal that you pull out to extend. I think in an emergency situation that may get bent or break off easily if things are fast paced around you. The adapters for the ,mobile device charging are the same you see with just about every one of these. USB hookup so I just throw a charging cable in there for my phone so I don't have to mess with the older style adapter they provide if I don't need to. Overall, good all-around tool you hopefully never need to use. Combines several devices into one to save space and money. I have one for my home and a couple for my cars. Would (probably will) purchase again. ... show more

  • LOVE IT! Much rather have it and not need it.... than to need it and not have it.
Color: Red
In the PNW we often lose power due to windstorms. It happened to me 12/19. I got tired of sitting in the dark and not even being able to listen to the radio. As soon as the power came back, I ordered this. Arrived next day (prime). And for $16??? I checked all functions straight out of the box except solar charging, and all worked perfectly (after cranking for 3 - 5 minutes per the instructions). This will be an invaluable piece of kit to have on hand. A no-brainer purchase. ... show more

  • Great Little Radio/Light/Charger for Emergencies
Color: Red
Very neat little emergency jack of all trades. Recently Hawaii had a powerful hurricane come very close to hitting and although it didn’t greatly affect the majority of the islands, it was a serious threat. These kinds of things make you check your disaster preparedness kits and this was the one thing we didn’t have and couldn’t get before the storm. A radio is very important to have around and I liked that this had a variety of ways to have power including a hand crank, a small solar panel, and a rechargeable 1000mAh battery. It also has a decent light and the ability to charge your devices via USB port on the back. The device feels pretty durable for a cheaper plastic build. I think it should hold up with proper care but it isn’t necessarily built to throw around. I think the build is reasonable for the price. The radio works as well as I’d hope. It is easy enough to dial into the stations and with the telescoping antenna it can pick up a signal very well. The speaker is cheap and nothing to write home about but it is more than functional for its intended use. I think a problem with these type of handcrank radios is that due to not using them very much between potential disasters, the batteries lose their capacity and become nearly useless outside of hand cranking it the entire time you’re using it. I imagine that this can be an issue for this radio and so it is probably important to store it with about a half a charge and occasionally check and recharge as needed to maintain the battery health. Overall I think it’s great and important to have and hopefully I’ll never have to truly test its importance but I think it is a good deal for the price and I can recommend it. ... show more
