Honestly, I was quite surprised when I fired these up, considering all of the glowing reviews. I found a speaker that was overly bright and somewhat edgy. I own NHT SuperZeros and Sonos Ones and the Elacs were just too hot for me. I can’t figure it out. Maybe it’s because the iPod Generation has damaged their ears with earbuds and the rest are just older like myself and lost their high frequency hearing. I know my hearing has suffered and yet I still find the b5.2s a bit glaring. It’s not awful, mind you. If I turn down the treble about 5dB, they work fine, but I shouldn’t have to engage the tone controls at all. I prefer to bypass them. It’s not good when an audiophile speaker is brighter sounding than a Sonos One. In case anyone is interested, I’ve owned the KLH 6, Magnepan MG1s, stacked Advents and the original Cambridge Soundworks Ensemble. I’ve also listened to everything from the Rogers LS to Klipschorns (both of which I love). I like my NHTs, but am looking for something a bit more extended in high frequency, but the Debut 2.0s are just too much in that way. They measure dead flat for the most part, but that is not what most people actually want. Most folks prefer a gentle roll off above 10kHz. Flat is not neutral when it comes to speakers. Extremely happy with these speakers. Spent a lot of time researching and almost pulled the trigger on KEF/Klipsch because I had the budget and thought the aesthetics were better. The ELACs look a lot better in the flesh than in marketing/catalogue images and I like the old school look. Living in an apartment the front porting is important and I have these flush against the wall. Paired them with a new Yamaha WXA-50 and this combination is working very nicely for me. Had planned on a small subwoofer but am so far enjoying these organically. If I had a sub I would cross it pretty low and let the ELACs do most of the heavy lifting. Glad I went for the 5.2 and not the 6.2 as the sound rocks without the need for more space. Spent a few dollars on custom Oakwood stands. Sound is awesome, bass is solid and I would happily recommend these little beauties. Put the money you saved to better use. ... show more

These were purchased to replace a pair of Polk RTi4 bookshelf speakers that were too bright for my taste. I am powering these with a Yamaha RX-383 5.1 surround receiver. I was hoping for a substantial improvement in overall sound quality and clarity and these did not disappoint. Positives: Compared to the Polk speakers these Elac bookshelves are clearer with much better separation, better bass and mid range. The highs are clear but never too bright especially compared to the Polks which caused physical pain from the high frequency sounds when the volume was turned up. Negatives: The only possible negative that I have encountered so far is that these are less efficient than the Polk speakers and require more power to get a similar volume.     • Not an audiophile slayer, beats the other cheap speakers out there...

These are good at $230, not good enough at $300. The fact is, with so many terrible products to be had at this price online, these are a great deal because you are guaranteed a good quality product and they look great. They are musical. But people classify these as audiophile quality at much less cost. So much so I bought a pair and tossed onto an Audio Research preamp, hand built tube amp, with cables that cost more than the speakers. I compared them to some DIY kit Dynavox from a popular vendor (which is also popular at this price point) and then against B&W 607s. Which are about double the price. These promise (or at least the reviews do) that level of sound at less money. My verdict, they do not. They are equal, maybe a tad better, than what you would build yourself from a high quality parts kit. The B&Ws simply wiped the floor with these, there is no way you can compare them. They aren't even playing the same game. But I want to recommend these, if this is your limit of budget, these are very good. If you're trying to save $300, don't. For the tech savy, some of the crossover capacitors are electrolytics, not all film or metallized polymer. A sure fire quick upgrade - probably should have been done at the factory though. I like and am keeping these for my workshop, my biggest complaint is people say these give you audiophile sound for $300 that $600-$1500 dollar speakers do... and they simply do not. For audiophiles, this is a “budget” entry. For average folks, they’ll seem pricey. All i can say is they are worth it. After buying a HTIB system that i was trying to keep on a budget, i found the speakers that came with it (Yamaha YHT-4930UBL system) were kind of thin, especially the center. Tried replacing the center with a Pioneer SP-C22, but while much improved it still was too bright on the high end (crunchy sound). Read a lot about these speakers and the matching center speaker from the same series. While I didn’t want to spend this kind of money on speakers for a budget build in an off gaming/media room, i quickly found they were worth every penny. Avengers: Infinity War in 4K sounded amazing. The matching center to this series (separate purchase) had terrific clarity without being too much treble, very warm sound. These bookcase speakers used as fronts and surround had amazing depth and clarity. The balance in the sound was unbelievable. No overwhelming base or treble. Just awesome surround and sound presence. If you’re like me, not an audiophile, but wanting to build on a budget, it may feel like these are outside the pricing of “budget build”. It’s worth the investment though if you want a good pair of speakers that can help you make a “set it and forget it” build that won’t have you constantly fiddling with the sound settings when switching between different content. ... show more
