  • Good performance but finicky, have to install drivers from website to get it to work at all
Edit: My new router arrived and is a vast improvement over my prior router. Out of curiosity I tried using this dongle again and it works exactly the way I wanted it to when I bought it in the first place; clearly it was my old router that was entirely the problem. Revising rating to 4. The setup is still a pain and needs better documentation about the drivers (something my new router handled well, so it's possible to do). I bought this for an older laptop that could only interact with 2.4ghz wireless signals and my router only had 5ghz. I'm giving 2 stars instead of 1 because it did eventually work, but even now it will periodically turn itself off - or at least drop the connection - so I have to run the built in troubleshooter to reset it and restore the connection. Some days it's worse than others and it won't stay connected. Most of the time it will have one or two hiccups and then work fine. It came with an installation CD which I ran successfully, but it wasn't able to connect. I had to go read a lot of other reviews and support before I found someone saying you need to get manufacturer driver updates from the website before it would work, and once I did that it did work most of the time. As noted above, however, it isn't a reliable connection. I wouldn't even bother to review really but I am annoyed by the poor support and lousy capabilities of this device. I bought this hoping I could avoid buying a new router and that didn't work out for me. If you need a quick fix for a short period of time, this will do the job, but don't expect it to be a long term solution. ... show more

  • but I ran multiple tests (by disabling and enabling connections in windows) and they seemed pretty consistent. After being advertised as 450Mbps/1300Mbps
I bought the Edimax EW-7833UAC AC1750 Dual-Band Wi-Fi USB adapter. I have two problems with this product: the speed and the Linux support. Since speed is more relevant to most folks, I'll talk about that first. This card is very rough. After installing drivers on Windows and setting it up, I noticed my downloads had slowed to a crawl, and websites were taking a long time to load. Since I happened to have an ethernet cord that could stretch across my living room to my router, and a Netgear card that I bought at a BestBuy a while back, I figured I'd put them all to the test. Here are my results from Speedtest.net: Wired Ethernet: 50.89 Mbps down, 5.11 Mbps up Netgear card 2.4GHz: 30.03 Mbps down, 5.11 Mbps up Netgear card 5.0GHz: 50.76 Mbps down, 5.04 Mbps up Edimax AC1750 2.4GHz: 1.33 Mbps down, 0.67 Mbps up Edimax AC1750 5.0GHz: 1.70 Mbps down, 5.06 Mbps up So, in summery, this adapter is roughly 20-25 times slower than my other wifi adapter with download speeds. And this was with the AC1750 plugged into a USB 3.0 port and the Netgear using USB 2.0. Not sure why the upload speeds worked correctly with the 5.0GHz connection, but I ran multiple tests (by disabling and enabling connections in windows) and they seemed pretty consistent. After being advertised as 450Mbps/1300Mbps, the actual result was very underwhelming. If I didn't have the other Wi-Fi adapter, I would have assumed it was my router. But it was definitely this card. Now, onto linux support. I got this adapter because my Netgear card didn't support Linux, and I recently installed Ubuntu 16.04. Seeing "Linux" in the title of the page made me think that this was a good deal and would work for me. It did...eventually. The official drivers only go up kernel version 4.4, which is far below what my fresh install of Ubuntu was using. I was eventually able to find a git repo that was updated recently with good drivers, but it took a lot of digging, a 20ft ethernet cord across my living room, and quite a bit of hair-pulling. Eventually, it was able to work. So that's why I give two stars instead of one, because it did do what I needed to do, albeit poorly and only after a lot of work on my part. ... show more

  • Good adapter, but has issues with dropped connections on USB 3.0 ports
Great USB network adapter! Been using it a week now and I can't believe how well it works compared to others I've tried. I have 120 Mbps cable internet. The wireless routher (Linksys WRT1900ACS) is about 35-40 feet away through two walls. The Edimax EW-733UAC gets 115 Mbps on the 5Ghz connection! I can't believe its that strong from that distance. I play World of Warcraft with this PC and is just like a wired connection - very low latency (25ms) and no lag spikes. It gets the same performance with the antenna unfolded or retracted (so I keep it folded up). I couldn't be happier, especially considering the reasonable price. Highly recommended. Edit: After a few weeks it began dropping the USB 3.0 port connection and it would take a reboot for it to find available networks again. Tried the most recent drivers for both the OS and the adapter, reinstalled the firmware on the router - nothing helped. That said, it works fine on USB 2.0 ports. Its a little slower, but still fast. Still, I wish it would work in a USB 3.0 port. Knocking a star off for this. ... show more

  • Advertised as 1300 Mbps Speeds and is False. Good product, not speeds as advertised.
If you're reading this review, you've probably come up against the same or similar concern as I did. The speeds aren't as advertised. They advertise speeds upto 1300 Mbps with 3 spatial streams on wireless AC. Well, I work in the wireless industry and use these devices for surveys, which they work great for the price, but they're not supporting their advertised speeds. If you review the images I've attached, the diagnosis is that this specific model, EW-7833UAC or Edimax AC1750, does not have the capability of 1300 Mbps, but instead it's Max Capability is 975 Mbps. This isn't a driver issue, the last driver from Edimax's support site is rev. 01.0.0.6, Support OS: Windows 7/8/8.1/10, Languages: English, Date: 2017-01-18 (There are other OS versions also with more current dates). Clean install, different devices installed and tested on, different settings on wireless controller and consumer grade wireless equipment which results in the same speeds. If you are looking for the 1300Mbps, out of this model, please look elsewhere. If you are ok with the speeds up to 975 Mbps and the capabilities with certain survey software or unique devices, then this is an excellent choice. It accommodates what I need at this time, but I will test the next iteration of these devices and if they do not support their advertised speeds, immediately send them back for a refund. ... show more
