  • I think I have the heater settings figured out. With a little patience, it now works great and am very happy with it.
This water heater has great high end features of far more expensive versions. It is very well made and once the knobs are set for your particular needs, it works consistently. The 'water temperature' adjustment knob could use a better description. From tinkering with it, I concluded the 'water temperature' knob is really a flow rate adjuster. A higher 'water temperature' setting, makes the water heater turn on at lower flow rates (lower demand) but also limits the flow capacity. It seems to behave like a restricter, that increases the flow velocity which then triggers the heater to turn on, but like a restrictor, it also limits the maximum water flow rate. Turn the 'water temp' to a much lower setting and the heater flows a lot more hot water but also needs more water 'demand' (two small faucets together will do it) to trigger the heater to turn on. The gas knob simply adjusts the size of the flame. So with lower water flows (higher 'water temperature' knob setting) you will want a smaller flame to keep the heater from shutting off due to overheating from the lower water flow. So to clarify: A Higher 'water temperature' knob setting = more 'turn on' sensitivity but a lower maximum water flow rate. A Lower 'water temperature' knob setting = less 'turn on' sensitivity but a higher maximum water flow rate. Once you set the right 'sensitivity to flow' for your needs, then simply set the gas knob to a good water temp. I would err on the cooler side (lower gas knob setting) to keep the heater from over heating and shutting off. But if you have higher water flow setting (lower 'water temperature' knob position) the gas can be set a little higher. In order to warm the increased water flow. I hope this helps someone who was not considering this heater. It really works great, it simply needs a little patience to be set to your speciific water heat and flow needs. ... show more

  • Good solid unit, just pray it doen's break down on you.
Worked great! For a year, suddenly it started throwing an E3 error, I contacted tech support, they set up a time to call me to provide tech support at noon that day, I came home from work and waited... no call.... by 1:30 I gave up and went back to work. Later that day they send me an email stating they tried to call me and no one answered. My phone was next to me with a full signal the whole time, no calls came in. Based on my past experiences with tankless water heaters and the E3 error code I took it upon myself to order two sensors, hopefully, that will fix the problem. Build quality seems good, solid materials, easy to install. Just pray you don't have any issues. There are NO technicians to call to come to fix it. You're stuck with crappy tech support and ordering parts to replace and see if it fixes it. 2019 Update to the previous review: Tech support finally called me back, we looked at the unit, I sent them pics and we discovered the E3 error was not the worst of my problem, something had short-circuited in the unit and fried the wiring throughout. At first, they thought it was a lightning strike to our house, but there's a washer plugged into the same outlet (GFCI) and it was unharmed. They had me send the unit in (That cost $50 for shipping) and after a day of review at their plant, they decided to send a brand new unit. Which I thought was the least they could do, since now my household has been without hot water for a month. (Thank god for the shower in our RV). I installed the new unit on 7/24/2018, the new unit worked flawlessly until the first week of January 2019. One of my daughters took a very hot shower (about 112F at the unit) for about 30 minutes. ever since then, it's developed E3 code ignition issues. So now I'm back to contacting tech support. Once we get this fixed, this Summer I'll be shopping for a different brand. I'm done... ... show more

  • Limitless hot water, easy installation. A little challenging to adjust...
So a year later -- Still running great, temperature control still a little annoying (see below)! If you are using PEX like I am, be sure to get a braided hose to go from the heater to the hot water PEX. Keep in mind how the contriols on this unit work -- Left knob (Gas regulator) controls the size of the flame. It is constant, -not- modulated. Right knob ("Water temperature regulator") seems to control the flow sensitivity and somehow the temperature (sort of).. - This restricts the flow a bit the lower it is set, but allows the unit to turn on at progressively lower flow rates. To get started -- Turn the left knob closer to the lowest setting and the right knob about - Take note of the displayed temperature (approximate temperature of the incoming water if the heater hasn't yet run or as has cooled) - Run the hottest setting your lowest flowing faucet (usually a bathroom sink). Adjust the RIGHT knob turned near the top of the marked scale, maybe a little lower. If the heater still is running, adjust your left knob to show a good temperature -- if not turn the right knob down slowly until the heater kicks on. You're going to spend some time adjusting it & figuring out what works with your plumbing system. If you are suddenly getting cold water one of two things is happening: Either you are overheating the heater (left knob too high for the flow rate) or you have the right knob adjusted too high for your flow rate. i do NOT have single handle fixtures, nor have i heard good things about compatibility with these heaters. Read the whole review to understand why. I would recommend strongly considering spending the extra about 100$ on the I12-NV (or -LP as appropriate) for most people. I went with this model (FVI-12-NG) expecting some of the issues that come with the nature of it's controls. I would recommend mounting it somewhere you can access it change the left knob setting when the seasons change, if you live somewhere the incoming water temp varies greatly. Remember, this heater is always putting out the same amount of heat, regardless of the flow rate. Less flow (turn your faucet down to say 1/2 flow, but more than the shutoff flow set by the right knob) and let it run for a few minutes. See what your lower flow temperatures are going to, especially if you have children in your home! My water gets extremely hot for a bit, then the unit will shut down showing the error code for too hot. I think my bathroom faucet is 0.8gpm v 1.5gpm at my shower. Overall it's a great heater and it's worked well. It requires some getting used to but once it's setup you have literally endless hot water within 10-12 seconds. I have a resin media filter for particulates & a 10" KDF85/Alumina/Carbon filter on my incoming water. I recommend at very least a string wound filter, just to keep the heat exchanger cleaner. This unit does NOT contain an internal heater, so you should protect it from freezing. Hope this helps! Definitely works well for my small house. Keep in mind that it targets a set rise at a relatively limited flow range. I'd probably buy the I12 AND install it upstairs, rather than in my basement, if I did this again. It still works great a year later, besides a few times a year having to turn the LEFT knob between sharpee marks on the case ;) ... show more
