    • Handles seed mixes!
I bought one of these to use in broadcasting a large variety mix of prairie/pollinator/wildflower seeds for a three acre field I'm converting from tall fescue and weeds. My mix contained everything from dust sized seeds to sunflower and large size grass seeds. To help it broadcast easier, my vendor had added ground oats and chopped up oat straw. I couldn't find any setting recommendations for this kind of stuff, but the private land conservationest who was advising me split a map of my field into five equal sections, and I did the same with my seed mix. I was then able to experiment with settings in the first section, and quickly settled on setting my seeder adjustment arm on the fourth stob. With just that setting I was able to thoroughly crosshatch each of my field sections with a fifth of my seed mix very accurately. I was quite pleased with the uniformity of planting I was able to achieve with this spreader. One thing I didn't like right away was the lack of a simple instruction sheet. I found it online, but come on, a single sheet of paper doesn't cost that much. One feature on the product I didn't like was the strap attachment. My strap came loose in the middle of my using the machine, and the attachment was so tight that I'm amazed it didn't break. It may yet. My impression after researching this machine, and then buying one is that they've recently done a redesign for better manufacturability and to cut costs. They've definitely improved some features, but still need to do some more work on it. All in all, I'm quite pleased with this product, and highly recommend it! ... show more

This spreader works great for walking and spreading Bermuda seeds around rough areas, like pond dams and sediment piles. I had first ordered The Chapin 84700 model, which was cheaper than this one. I sent it back because the bottom seal leaked my expensive seeds out, even when it was set to closed. This one may cost a bit more but it actually WORKS THE WAY IT IS SUPPOSED TO! ... show more

I used to use these professionally for residential lawns. They hold way more fertilizer than any hand held spreaders. The mechanism for dispersal rate is a bit different but still functional.     • A bit awkward, but got the job done.
I really like how this device allows the user to control the direction and throw distance of the seed or fertilizer being spread. I had just watered some new sod in my yard when I ordered this item. Due to my sloped yard and fact that the sod was very squishy from watering it, there was no way I could walk on the sod pushing a spreader or tow a spreader behind my lawn tractor. My sod installation guy told me about this bag spreader that allowed me to walk around the perimeter of the yard to spread lime and fertilizer without damaging the new sod. Assembly was a bit tricky. A third hand would have helped. Filling the hopper bag from a large, heavy bag of lime or fertilizer without spilling was also a bit of a challenge. I accomplished this by laying the bag of fertilizer on my truck tailgate and setting the bag spreader on top of a stool that was a foot or so lower than the tailgate. This gave me more control while filling the hopper. It’s important to follow the instructions about not overfilling the hopper bag. Filling it more than 60-80% full will likely result in some spillage and the bag strap gets very heavy around one’s neck. I found that the crank on the spreader was not easy to rotate in a consistent manner when the bag was more full. It took some practice. I had quite a bit of lime and fertilizer to spread with this device and it gave me quite a workout on my 1/2 acre sloped yard. But, it solved the dilemma of how to spread this stuff without walking on my new sod. Using it on a smaller, flat yard would probably work pretty well. ... show more

Made of plastic unlike the old models. The crank feels like it will break if you spin too fast. Also it doesn't spring closed by its self
