  • A spreader built better than it works
I'll get to the point: the spread pattern on this Earthway 2600A Plus spreader sucks. This has been mentioned before by other reviewers and it *is* the biggest "fail" on this product. This is my second lawn season using this spreader ...so I have some miles on it and this is my experience with it. Most importantly: When I (or you) spend this kind of money on a lawn spreader I expect it to spread at least as good as much cheaper spreaders (like the Scotts Edgeguard I used to have) ...and certainly it should spread material exceptionally better than most cheaper spreaders (like the Scotts Edgeguard I used to have). Isn't that the purpose of a lawn "spreader" ...to evenly and consistently distribute any and all lawn supplements? BUT IT DOESN'T; the Earthway 2600A Plus Ev-n-Spread (a serious misnomer) definitely has issues consistently applying an even, side-to-side spread with certain lawn products. I have yet to get the "even" spread as indicated by its name. If you are using lawn supplements where the product is shaped like small BB's of varying size you will have feed issues ...especially if the supplement calls for a small/low spreader setting. I just got done spreading (Sta-Green) pre-emergent; on the bag was listed a "15" setting for the "Earthway Ev-n-Spread". From the get-go the spreader would not feed well on it's own; simply opening the hopper and moving off resulted in no flow to an erratic insufficient flow. I had to jostle the spreader quite frequently and regularly to keep the pre-emergent at an even flow. *Every* time I shut the hopper and re-opened it the flow was stopped up and I had to jostle the spreader to get things moving again. I have had this happen *every* time I use a lawn supplement with round-shaped pellets of varying size and small/low settings. And an "Ev-n-Spread"? Hardly. It was definitely one-sided with most of the product coming off the left side ...and, yes, the "edge guard" was turned off. In my most recent use of this spreader I could see a lot of the pre-emergent hitting the left tire and framework. I should have gotten a near 180 deg spread of product but barely got 90 degrees; in a spreader of this class and cost that is totally unacceptable. The 2600A Plus is apparently not designed to handle all the possible lawn products on the market ...certainly not those products using various sized ball-shaped pellets and, especially, those requiring a low or small spreader setting. An essential part of the success of this spreader's spread pattern is having a good walking speed ...I believe the instructions call it a "brisk" pace. I was running a marathon trying to get the ball-shaped pellets of the pre-emergent to spread evenly ...so, no, I was not taking a leisurely stroll. And if the "rotor" speed is that critical to getting a good spread pattern, I would think having a better gear ratio in the rotor gearbox or larger tires might improve the speed of the rotor and the spread pattern without having to speedwalk your lawn. What I believe to be the critical failure point with the hopper ...and why lawn products with varying ball-shaped pellets don't work well ...has to do with the fact the slot openings feeding the rotor end up being wedge or triangular-shaped and the various sized ball-shaped pellets clog the openings ...especially when the openings are small. For other lawn products not using ball-shaped pellets or requiring larger/higher settings the operation of the 2600A Plus is much better. I use a popular lawn fertilizer (Milorganite) and this product is made with very small flecks or pellets and the feed is *much* better. Scotts products also feed much better as their lawn products tend to be small "flakes" or "chips" that flow easily. But as far as an even spread ...even with the "finer grind" products? Nah ...there is still a left side bias to how this "primo" spreader slings lawn supplements. My prior much-cheaper-to-buy Scotts Edgeguard spreader had a much better spread pattern than the 2600A Plus Earthway does. As far as putting this thing together? Yeah, it's a little bit of a challenge but patience will win out; you *do* have to read the instructions and look at the part(s) orientation in the diagrams. If you're not an "instructions" kind of person then, yeah, you'll screw it up. Take your time and go step by step and you'll get it together just fine. I wanted to write a glowing review about this spreader because its best attribute is its robust makeup of quality parts and the fact you can get replacement parts when something breaks. When putting the spreader together I was so hoping it would work as good as the sum of its parts. To my dismay it works ...spreads ...no better and sometimes worse than my previous, much cheaper, spreader. So buy this thing for it's robust nature but don't think for a minute it's going to spread any better than whatever you were using before because this is definitely a spreader built better than it works. ... show more

  • high build quality, but doesn't last
I am now on my third year with this thing, and it always seems like there is another issue. Year 2 the gearbox died, and to their credit they sent a new one (it was right around the end of the 1 year expiration). Now on the third year the edge guard is starting to jam, possibly due to the bolts connecting it to the main body starting to rust. It is always kept in the garage, but because of its nature it gets covered in chemicals, so I do frequently hose it down after use. Why wouldn't you use stainless steel hardware on a $200 spreader?? Generally, it is much higher quality than the options found in big box stores. The controls are a bit awkward, and the dosing take a bit more guesswork than I would like, but it's fine. That's kind of how these things all work. I would take the numbers they give in their manual as more of a general guideline. I frequently have to increase the size of the openings substantially to get anything to come out. Best way I've found to deal with it is to take the total amount you want to broadcast total, and divide it up into quarters or eighths and then divide your lawn up into a similar fraction. Then mess with the opening size until you get decent flow around the suggested number, and apply the measure portion out to the small subdivided part of your lawn. **This shouldn't be necessary.** And for very specific sizes of pellets it is overkill. For example, I recently applied ironite with no problem. And I used this to spread some organic fertilizer based on alfalfa (I seem to recall) that came in big, smooth pellets, and it spread perfectly. The recommended size worked great and I got the amount I wanted to apply with very little difficulty. On the other end of the spectrum, I tried to apply some powdered potassium sulfate, and that was an exercise in futility. I could have spread it more easily using a plastic cup from the kitchen. So, honestly, I've found this thing to be only slightly better than useless in some cases, and it has some serious longevity issues. The problem is that it still might be the best spreader on the market. For that reason alone, I feel it probably deserves at least 3*. If there was something better, I would for sure give it less. I don't understand what is so difficult about spreaders that no one makes a high quality one at this price point. $190 isn't a *ton* of money, but it should be enough to get a product that does it's job and lasts for a long time. This ain't that. ... show more

  • Amazing spreader, horrible assembly
The first time using this spreader after using a Scott’s mini for years was surreal! So smooth, good range too. However, the assembly instructions are terrible and their YouTube tutorial was terrible. In the video the camera was pointed on the wrong side and you can’t see what the person is doing. Don’t even bother with the paper instructions that come with it ... show more

  • Earthway 2600A Plus Spreader
I purchased the Earthway 2600A Plus Spreader to replace my old Scott's Spreader, where the rear wheel had come off, and because it couldn't take the changing terrain year after year. The instructions like many have said, were challenging. I researched and watched YouTube videos and read and was up for it and timed it. Alas it took the same time as others, but I got her done. I originally compared price, use, tire refill options, etc to other Spriders and chose this. My wife questioned the price until I showed her others. I used it and was impressed. I purchased another bolt and wing nut to adjust the fertilizer feed in addition to the one supplied. The downside of the Spreader is adjusting or calibrating it to different sizes. Unlike Scott's some bags don't have the rate flow for it. I've put down Insecticide with it, and I plan to put down some soil humichar amendment, and fertilizer soon. Also there were a few times I tried turn it with quite a bit of fertilizer in it and handle had a little too much give. Otherwise it has been great, and in spite of the instructions short comings and putting it together I would recommend this Spreader, and others by Earthway. ... show more
