  • Very good large sized broadcast spreader
I used this spreader for the first time today and I was impressed with how well it spread the fertilizer and how easy it was to push with 75 lbs of fertilizer. The assembly instructions were a little confusing, however the gears, larger wheels, and tapered hopper worked great. I replaced a 30 year old commercial quality Agri-Fab spreader with the Earthway 2170 and the Earthway is even better than my old spreader. The large wheels, better quality gears and tapered hopper that feeds granulated fertilizer better than the flat bottom models made the job quick and easy. Make sure you have the right pressure in the tires and it will be easy to push even with a big load of fertilizer. A very good large spreader for large yards IMHO. ... show more

  • good product.
well made, solid, wide stance is stable. assembly took me 1.5-2 hours. They try to make it clear sequentially what to do. Do not try to "wing it". Despite some of prior posts about poor instructions, I think the one I got showed they tried hard to make it clear with references to specific bolts/pictures , but still fairly complex. Set your bolts up in groups of size and length before starting. This one was fully unassembled, and may also come as "partially assembled" which would make your day easier. This is the second one I bought, and now has a horizontal bar on back to support on the ground rather than two feet on the model from three years ago. That one runs well still. Anti-rust spray at end of season, and regular rinsing after use should make it last a long time. I have no plans for spreading salt and this should help. I secured the screen in the hopper to a 9" length of steel 1/16" cable tether to be sure it does not get lost, or blow off if transporting on top of car. This one shows an effort at improved design. Spread rate is clearly given if you read the instructions and follow the advice, walking pace, and particle size, etc. I added a star lock washer under the knob that secures the flow setting handle to prevent movement once it is set for the day. ... show more

  • I like it! But it only gets a “4” ….
…. because of the instructions. Im actually quite a mechanical person and don’t mind diving into most projects, but having to read each step several times gets kind of annoying. I’ve never owned one of these , let alone assemble one. Yea there’s a video online to assemble (thank you!!) but personally I don’t like watching a video as I assemble something, it did correct the most “confusing and frustrating “ part of the assembly. The pivot rod from the hopper to pivot bracket was mounting awkwardly and prevented the hopper from fully opening. I read, reread and studied the instructions believing I had installed it correctly according to the faded Xerox’d instructions (looked almost like a “ditto” machine copy circa 1979!). The only solution I believed (to make this near $500 item work!) was to trim the rod with my dremel cut off tool. Then my wife yelled dinner was ready, frustrated I went inside to fill my belly. Then I decided to not proceed any further for the night. I stumbled across the factory assembly video the next morning while drinking my Black Rifle Coffee, and it showed the proper way to install. It all made sense now , nearly 16 hours after I began that project. Switched the rod around , and it worked like a dream. Took it off the workbench and set it on the floor, holy cow! This thing felt nothing like the Scott’s elite spreader I used 1x and had just returned. This thing felt sturdy and stable. Later in the day I applied duocide to kill off the bugs. WOW! I’m in love. My ground is not super flat , but this thing rolled like a dream & didnt Feel like it was going to tip over with the 50# product inside. The only thing I learned quickly is, don’t stop, close the hopper, then let it rest on back supports. ALL the product on the flinging wheel poured off into a huge pile on the ground. Overall super happy in the 1x I’ve used it. ... show more

  • Great spreader
I've been using my son's Earthway for several years and finally decided to order one. Based on others' reviews, I don't look forward to assembling it :), but I do look forward to using it. I love the pneumatic tires, the large capacity, and the ease of use, all of which add up to getting lime and fertilizer spread quickly and easily on my half acre yard. Another reviewer mentioned that he didn't like that it spread material more to one side than another. I've actually found this helpful in controlling distribution when running it along curbs and garden beds. Calibrating it requires a little trial and error, but I've found that to be true with other rotary spreaders, and have no problem after a couple applications. My son's spreader has held up very well over the years, which is another reason I've decided to buy one. ... show more

  • beefy and substantial, but does not work as well as hoped for
This is a very nice spreader. Like others say, it takes some time to assemble, but that was fun. A few things to know before buying: 1) its big, and that's great because it holds two or three bags which I need for my yard. 2) One of the tires does not hold air more than a week. So i have to refill each use. 3) Like nearly all spreaders, it broadcasts heavy to one side and lighter on the other. I was hoping and expecting it to be more uniform. Its a good product, and same as i've seen in other stores (assembled). Great price on Amazon. ... show more

  • Returned the junk Scott’s and am so pleased with Earthway!
I’m very pleased with this spreader. Beats the heck out of those pieces of garbage “Scott’s” spreaders. I bought one of those green ones, terrible - barely would roll, handle too short for a tall guy and the worst was the VERY uneven distribution of fertilizer. I checked everything 3x and contacted the manufacturer which only advised me to try what I had already told them I had done!!! Ugh! The only nit I have with this Earthway is that you MUST remember to close the chute when you stop to refill the hopper. I guess it would have been nice to have a trigger to hold to open the door - separate from the flow control. But otherwise a very good product and I’m pleased. The only spreader I found nicer is the Lesco but it is more expensive than I could justify for my 3/4 acre yard. ... show more
