Top Amazon Reviews

  • Great Unit - Good value - Not for Everyone
I over-research stuff, yet reading reviews is maddening. You think you've found a good item, and then you read the 1-star reviews. Well, to cut to the chase, I wasn't going to spend this much money (even w/coupon) and was going to get a ~$20 unit. I've got "real speakers" all over the house and back yard, so this is just for portability. Anyway, I took the plunge on this one based on everything I could put together from Reddit, enthusiast publications, and these reviews. I'm glad I did. Fakespot pans the review quality here, but I ain't no 'bot, so here's a short story: - Build quality is solid (see teardown videos on Youtube/unit has some heft/even the packaging is nice) - Sound quality is really good (subjective I know, but there's some Youtube comparisons out there and you can geek out on frequency response charts on Reddit) Cons: If you want the best sound out of it, re-flash the firmware down one revision. Not that the firmware it's now shipped with is bad (v5.0), but the last version (v4.8) has more neutral frequency response. You can find the charts if you want to deep dive. Well, you have to geek out a bit if you're going to flash firmware. It's not hard, and you can find everything you need by searching for "Earfun Uboom L" and spending a little time. I just reflashed the firmware on mine from 5.0 to 4.8 and it didn't take very long at all. YMMV. The only other thing I might note is the control buttons aren't illuminated or even painted. The on/off, bluetooth, volume, etc. buttons are embossed black rubber...not a visual standout so you may be getting close to the unit to read them until you're familiar with it. Lastly, there's no carry lanyard or some such if that is a factor in your search. All in all, I think this thing puts out excellent sound for the money. It's definitely in a whole different league from the $20 units I was looking at. But! (There's always a "but" isn't there?), if you're hung up on the firmware thing - specifically if you don't think it sounds as good with v5.0 that is loaded currently, AND messing w/computers, utility programs, and cables is not for you, then you might want to spend more bucks (maybe double?) on another unit. As noted, you can find the instructions on line and see if you'd want to do it. Sorry for not putting links to all these references, but I found 'em pretty quickly so if you're interested, you won't have a problem finding more info than you'll need. As noted, I'm quite happy with it despite the caveats. I have zero buyer's remorse on this one. And as for the quality of product reviews, if I were a 'bot, would I know who won the 1938 World Series? Oh wait, that's the question they ask in those bad WWII movies to find the spy... ... show more

  • Excellent fidelity. Excellent volume. Excellent battery life.
Nice floor-rattling bass. Speaker has two woofers. Pristine audio. I have yet to try changing the firmware. There is a noticeable audio delay between when a sound should be played and when it's actually played, but I do not know if this is due to the speakers or the Bluetooth audio source (or both) . Joining the speaker with another speaker to provide left/right sound works well. Connecting the speakers to devices works decently. Disconnecting the speakers from a device so that they can connect to a different device is a bit of a challenge. It could also be that the devices are greedy and do not like to un-pair from the speaker. I probably need to read the user manual. I am considering purchasing an additional pair of these in case they are discontinued in the future. ... show more

  • Could it be the best in its class but also one of the best ever?
The speaker itself it's pretty decent as far as construction goes, though the charging port area could be better designed to avoid pulling the flap every time it needs to be charged and possibly scratching everything around it. As far as battery goes, it's ok, nothing special, but wish it lasted more. It has potential for more battery time but it just fell short. Now to the most important aspect; Sound 1. DSP management in pretty much all Bluetooth speakers has become a joke. It's horrible, with loudness output fluctuation and frequency modulation that just sounds outright terrible. This speaker pretty much cleans up all those headaches giving you consistent sound all the way through. 1st speaker I've heard so far to achieve that without breaking the bank. Now as far as actual sound quality or transparency. It's the best in class period! It's clean withouth overpowering high frequencies, and it's bass becomes decent yet I wish it had a tighter sound. What could be improved soundwise; is to be a bit larger in size with tweeters on board. Oluv's tuning is actually destructive, (Version 0.34 is the purest sound after multiple test comparisons, being that no additional modification has been done to the sound, while preserving consistency throughout volume levels). One can only imagine how the sound could improve with tweeters and larger radiators. Tighter sound is so hard to achieve, it's not just raising or lowering low, mid, or high frequencies. It's a very unique balance that doesn't just rely on mid frequencies but the whole spectrum. Uboom L 2nd generation with the upgrades I mentioned could be the best Bluetooth speaker around, point blank! JBL, Sony and every other brand charging abusive prices for junk will soon start to learn that customers value great products with great pricing! ... show more
