  • Softer than normal bristles but seems to work
Size: 6BK
FIRST IMPRESSIONS: I didn't notice the smell other reviewers mentioned, so that's good. The first thing I noticed when I pulled the brushes out is their size. They are short! I was using "moonshine" bottles as rinse cups and I couldn't reach the bottom where my puck is without dropping them (hands too big to go through the neck). Next I felt the bristles and noticed they were softer than other purpose-made drybrushes (the example most people will know is Games Workshop, curse their name). At first I thought this was going to make it so it wouldn't work well. I've been using purpose-made drybrushes and my daughter's old makeup brushes. This is softer than both of those. ACTUAL USE/REVIEW: Once I started using them, however, they seemed to perform well. The softer, but more densely packed bristles held the paint longer than the stiffer counterparts. In addition, if you didn't wipe off enough paint and accidently give a "wet" swipe, you don't get the individual lines of a stiffer brush, it blends to one soft, cloudy swipe. In fact there have been a few times, after seeing this, that I intentionally kept slightly wetter for such an effect. The drybrushing effects are pleasantly soft and has a nice gradient, giving much softer edges to the raised areas Vs recessed transition, avoiding ending up with highlights that have sharp, clear edges (a good thing, in case I didn't explain it well). If you'd used makeup brushes Vs stiff brushes, it's a similar effect--these work better, however. I don't know about the durability. I've used them for a few weeks, they seem to be OK, but are already splaying slightly. I did notice the bristles coming out at first, like other reviewers, but they were few enough in number I can't tell the difference and for the most part, that has stopped. I condition my brushes to keep them in better shape, these included, and I still see slight splaying. Not sure how well conditioning works on the synthetics as far as lifespan. When I got these a month prior to this review, they were about 20 bucks, but I see the price has since increased to 28. I think, at this stage, I'd have to think long and hard about replacing them with the same thing. For 20 bucks I think these were OK, once we hit 30 and higher, that value really comes into question, unless all other options increase similarly. These may have been on sale when I got them, not sure. Overall, short handles so for folks with big hands like me or deep rinse cups also like me, they can be awkward to use. But if you get a good set, they seem to work well and produce an equal or slightly better effect than the "big name" stiffer alternatives. I dropped one star due to the price increase. ... show more

  • Game changer!
Size: 6BK
I use these for customizing miniatures and other action figures. The difference in dry brushing with these brushes and just plain brushes is like night an day. These work so much better and apply the paint more evenly and smooth. Definitely recommend them to anyone who customizes toys.

  • Disappointing Odor Hinders the Potential
Size: 6BK
I recently purchased a set of paint brushes specifically designed for dry brushing, hoping to enhance my model painting. However, my overall experience with these brushes has been marred by an overwhelmingly unpleasant odor, which has significantly impacted my painting process. The brushes themselves exhibit a decent quality when it comes to their bristles. They are firm enough to create the desired dry brushing effect, and the varying sizes in the set provide versatility for different projects. Their ability to hold paint and distribute it evenly on the miniatures is commendable. In terms of functionality, the brushes perform adequately. However, the overpowering odor emitted by these brushes is a major drawback that cannot be ignored. The moment I opened the package, a pungent and unpleasant smell filled the air. It resembled a mixture of chemicals and synthetic materials, which lingered even after multiple attempts to air them out or wash them thoroughly. The noxious smell not only affected my concentration but also made the experience uncomfortable. It was particularly disheartening to witness the odor transfer to the paint itself, compromising the quality of my work. The scent's persistence made it challenging to fully immerse myself in the creative process, and it ultimately dampened my enthusiasm for using these brushes and I will be returning them. ... show more

  • Didn't realize a specific brush set was so much better
Size: 6BK
I have standard brushes, long, thin, fan, etc. I wanted to get into dry brushing some figurines. I didn't realize you could benefit from brushes specifically made for this purpose. Aside from the shorter more fitting handles, the shorter bristles I'm guessing is what its all about. A very nicely made set, gives me a nice selection of sizes and comes in a handy little case. Wonderful. ... show more

  • Pretty decent value offering on a 6pc set of natural bristled dry brushes
Size: 6BK
They're dry brushes for miniature painting. You load paint on them, then use a non-absorbent textured surface to remove the excess, then apply over your miniature in a side to side dusting type action so that the residual paint in the bristles is lightly and gradually applied to the raised, textured part of the miniature. Many use cloth or paper to remove excess paint, but doing so absorbs a lot of the water content of the paint and leaves the residual paint chalky from being mostly pigment particulate. I have a similar set from another brand but these have slightly longer bristles which I like. What you DO have to be careful of is to use a very light touch with these. There are a lot of bristles, but they're not tightly packed in the ferrule, so you can get that side to side dusting action with the bristles, but if you're not careful, you CAN end up scraping the edge of the drybrush ferrule against the miniature. It's a pretty decent set though at about $28 for the 6 brushes. A more famous competitor brand whose initials are AP sells a 3 pc set for just a few dollars less, so you get twice the amount of brushes and in a greater variety of sizes for just a couple dollars more and I'd say these are just as good of quality. ... show more

  • Very nice synthetic brushes for the cost.
Size: 6PC
They came in tied to a cardboard sheet with protectors on all six brushes. All of the tips are nice and sharp with only one or two strays needing to be cut off. Definitely will buy again when I need a new set!
