  • Forget GoPro, been there, done that. DJI - this is the way.
Style: Standard Combo
Even though the Osmo Action 5 is out, I chose to purchase this previous release on a sale. I am not disappointed. I had been studying these for some time, and knew this would be a good move. It was. My main use cases are: - live recording for music gigs - creative blogging - web streaming (though I have other cameras for that) Let's be clear - I have owned GoPros like the Hero Session 5 and the Hero 8 for many years. I've gigged with them, used them on vacation, and done some paid projects with them. I always struggled with the poor start up time, extremely poor battery performance, and other user interface issues on both of those GoPro models. Battery life is the main issue - with batteries running down while inside the camera while it's off. Almost every time I try to use the Hero 8, I need to immediately replace to battery, even if the battery was fully charged when I put the unit away. I finally broke down and started using a USB power pack, but that gets clunky and isn't always practical. Another big hassle was the Hero 8 web cam capability, which never worked properly on any OS that I tried, even after numerous firmware updates. Since they are now on Hero 13, there's no point beating that dead horse. I also attempted to cheap out with an AKASO EK7000, knowing it would probably suck. Honestly, it's not a bad camera for capturing squirrel videos on my porch. I love the remote that came with it. But the AKASO is not road-ready for gigs. The construction is cheap, the battery is hard to get to, and the batteries suffer from the same quick drain as the GoPro batteries. Which brings me back to the DJI Action 4. It's freaking is amazing. The immediate reaction in terms of user experience is joy. I took the DJI on a gig right away, and had no problem getting it to perform up to my expectations. Startup time is great. Battery life is amazing. The dual screen (front/back) really changes how you use a camera like this. The touch interface is a much smoother experience than GoPro. The magnetic mount is very nice too, and much less hassle (though I still use the GoPro connector on occasion). It's time to move to magnetic mounts. The *only* downside here is that Osmo still does not allow *clean* HDMI. Or so I hear. I have not tested this yet, but I imagine the web resources are correct on this. I can deal with that for now. I hear that the Action 5 is even better.... if that's true. WOW. You can even see GoPro now copying DJI with their magnetic mounts. GoPro knows they need to improve, or just get out of the way. This is my first DJI purchase, and they knocked it out of the park. Waiting for the Osmo Pocket 3 Creator Combo to go on sale, but I may not bother to wait. I am ready to leave GoPro behind. You should too. ... show more

  • Very pleased with results! Full 5 stars!
Style: Standard Combo
This has been a great little camera! I am used to shooting with a professional DSLR (Sony Alpha 7iii) with 240mm zoom lens for nature shots. So I had to make a major adjustment in my thinking with this camera that uses such a wide angle. At first, this was a limitation, but I have now gotten used to the format. It was purchased primarily as an underwater camera for snorkeling and exploring, though I have since been using it in many situations. I mostly use it to capture video, but I also try to grab stills to share with others due to file sizes. There is definitely a learning curve for navigating the settings and functions. There is limited real estate for controls, even with the two touch screens on the device. TIP: If you are getting this as a vacation camera, get it early. Spend time working with it, try all the settings, and practice using the controls so that you are comfortable with it during the trip. Don't wait and unbox it in your hotel room or cruise cabin! Due to the wide field of view, you will likely want to crop your images. Fortunately, the files are high resolution so you can zoom without graininess. For your reference, the fish and sea urchin photos in this collection are cropped, and the other 3 are original. TIP2: If you plan to use it in salt water, get the dive accessory kit. The camera itself is waterproof, and they even show it being used by a diver in their product advertising. However, the fine print says it is really not appropriate for salt water. Bottom line: Yes, I would get another DJI Osmo when the time comes to replace. ... show more

  • Good cam!
Style: Standard Combo
Kind of hard to figure it out at first but has gotten me some great footage. It does have a weird format on the video side (I forgot what it was) but VLC Player (The orange cone iconed video player) allows it to play just fine. Good options and not bad at all.

  • I finally upgraded
Style: Standard Combo
I've had a DJI Osmo Action 2 cam for years and I bought it as a refurb unit back in the day. It's been my favorite camera for years and I've been reluctant to upgrade to something newer just because my Action2 never fails and produces great video. I decided it was time as I had some extra funds lying around and I bought the Action 4. One of the main reasons is because I also have the DJI Mic2 that works flawlessly and wirelessly with the Action4. I love having the wireless mic that syncs up perfectly each time and records directly to the camera. Of course the video is amazing as expected and I never have any issues with the touchscreen or overheating. I didn't need to upgrade to the 4 as my Action 2 still works great. But I'm glad I did, and I imagine I will be using this one even longer than my other ... show more
