  • Excellent soundbar
I have traditional 5.1 surround sound set up in my family room and my 1st floor home office, which doubles as a secondary tv room, but I couldn't justify setting up a 3rd surround sound configuration for an outdoor tv I set up on a 3 season porch. However, I got tired of the poor sound off of the Sunbrite TV I have installed on the porch. It was drastically worse than what I was accustomed to, and made the viewing experience bad enough that I avoided watching a movie etc on that tv. I was wary about the quality of what soundbars provided based on what I heard at friend's homes. But lately I had read some positive reviews of soundbars, so I gave it a try. I am a fan of Denon in general. Their products are not the cheapest, and they are a bit outside the norm (I see a lot more Bose for wired audio and Sonos for wireless), but I find that Denon/HEOS provides the best value and I can count on the audio quality always being the priority with their products. I have heard complaints about the HEOS app, but for me, their mixture of receivers, wireless speakers, and HEOS Amps. After not having the opportunity for the ten years I lived in my first home, when I moved to a new home in 2016 that was new construction, I wired the place up before the walls closed. Although Sonos now has amps like the HEOS ones, and Bose also technically competes across the board, I like the fact that Denon products always sound great, everything I buy for audio in my home or away from my home can be within the Denon/HEOS ecosystem - receivers, amps, peripherals, wireless speakers - and while the price point is not low, it is not top of the market either. When I see negative reviews of Denon, I often see comments that this standard or that standard isn't supported, or that they are not 100% alexa compatible, which is true for all until their most recent line of products. I judge audio products on how they sound, not by the specs, outside of requirements. What I mean is - yes, specs matter, but it's not a specs-driven decision. I have never heard a samsung or sony audio product that sounds right to me. This soundbar, like the other products I have bought, sounds GREAT. This was the purchase I was most concerned about compared to past receivers and speakers. I have heard Vizio soundbars that in my opinion sounded terrible. Granted, they were cheaper, but still, they sucked. The other chief complaint about denon/heos is the heos app. I have seen the sonos app and I would agree, it is cleaner and better designed from a software perspective than the heos app. But for me, I am using a harmony remote for TV, or I am using spotify on my iphone, and spotify connect integrates natively with heos/denon products, so I can choose the speaker or receiver right from my spotify iOS app. That renders the heos app inferiority null and void for me. If I was a TIDAL user, maybe it would be different. Like other denon products, the inputs and so on are excellent, an area Denon often beats Bose. I'm actually shocked by how good this soundbar/subwoofer combo is. it approaches, not quite 100%, but it approaches the 5.1 I have elsewhere. If I set up a TV in my bedroom or somewhere else in the future, I am likely to go with a Denon soundbar again. I don't write reviews often, but this deserved a thumbs up. It's a great product that flies under the radar. ... show more

  • I did not give 5 stars because you just can't beat having a receiver !
I read many of the bad reviews prior to buying this bar and I have to say I experienced non of those issues.. I had no problem pairing the bar or subwoofer, took all of 15 mins to set up the unit! Maybe those negative reviews are not tech type people or have bad wifi ! Now as for the sound quality, it is 500% better than TV speakers, clearly a major upgrade.. However for 40 years I have always used a receiver & great bookshelf speakers & added center & rear as time went on to 5.1. You just can't beat 5.1. For that matter you just can't beat stereo with 2 good speakers.. I would toggle between my receiver & the Bar and my receiver is hands down the way to go. The best sound you can get with the most control over the sound.. Now my problem is my receiver after 20 years lost the digital, it just crapped out, after using analog stereo for about 4 months my analog started to get intermittent, hence why I just went & got the Denon bar. I have now gotten used to the bar & it is good quality, but as I said it will never compare to good stereo . Maybe in time when I add rear bluetooth speakers I will be even more satisfied.. For now, I trashed the receiver & have stored my speakers for future use on a larger TV in another room. The overall price was too high for me for what you are getting,. I could have just bought a Yamaha or Denon 5.1 receiver for $100 less and be set with my great stereo sound.. The bar has multiple features to adjust sound to some degree & easy set up for other rooms or adding the rears.. If you go threw the setting there isn't much you can't do. I would have gotten then DHT-716 but that was just way to much money, for that kind of money I am going with a great receiver & speakers. I guess it's this new generation that wants convenience so hence the sound bars.. ... show more

  • Great sound; disconnects; HEOS incompatible
This is a review of the soundbar, but it also turned into a disappointed review of the HEOS system. First, the soundbar is impressive, especially at this price ($399). As someone used to smaller soundbars and regular TV audio, the floor-rattling bass and clear treble add an exciting, immersive dimension to movies. Music sounds spectacular as well, though it's played via the HEOS app, which I find unwieldy. Second, the soundbar disconnected spontaneously a few nights ago while I was cueing up a movie with my daughters. It wouldn't reconnect, and I watched the movie in frustration. But the next day, it reconnected spontaneously, as if nothing had ever happened. If it were a person, I'd call it gaslighting--an unhealthy relationship, or at least a major red flag. I may still keep it because the sound is so good for the price, but I have another week to decide. Finally, I had mistakenly bought this as an addition to my HEOS 1 speakers, which I had planned to use for surround sound. Nope: that's only possible with the DHT-S716H soundbar, which apparently has issues of its own. Couldn't DENON simply push a software update and make all of these compatible? I can see them all on my HEOS app, but no, they're ungroupable. As an aside: DENON/HEOS has great sound but frustrating, at times infuriating, software problems. After two years, one of my HEOS 1 speakers just quit working, and its red flashing light ominously suggests it won't be functional again. I spoke with a tech who recommended I e-mail them my invoice to see if it's under warranty. No response since then. I hate to admit I was wrong, especially when I've invested a lot of time, hope, and money into DENON/HEOS. I bought these speakers because of what I'd hoped would be versatility, quality, and a different approach to home sound systems. They're great when they work, but if I had a do-over, I'd look at SONOS, Polk, Klipsch, Nakamichi, Sony--anything else. ... show more

  • Great Sound Bar
Style: DHT-S517 + Dolby Atmos
Our old sound bar was dropping its connection to the tv several times a week, so we bought a new one. The Denon works quite well with our tv but also with our podcasts and music listening. Very happy with it.
