  • Don't look back...
Style: BP9060
A new listening experience. I lived with two Mission 732s as front speakers and a 12 inch Velodyne Subwoofer for approximately 20 years. I also had 2 Polk Audio bookshelves and a Polk center channel for surround all powered by a Yamaha RX-V575. I had really good sound (i thought) and was very satisfied... I visited a friend who had 20 year old Definitive Technology BP-10s and was blown away. The difference between my sound and those DTs was astounding. I started shopping around and found the latest series of DT Bi-Polars. The price tag was hefty but I figured you only live once and music was always a passion for me so I decided to make the plunge. I spent some time researching the available components. DT had 3 models that caught my eye; BP-9040s, BP-9060s, and BP-9080s. After a budget review and reading reviews by others I decided on the BP-9060s, I also included the matching Center Speaker (CS-9060) and the SR and SL-9040 Surrounds (they did not make 9060 Surrounds). The price you see is the price you pay for these. So it was either pay the rent or buy the speakers (not really that bad, but close). All were beautifully packaged and arrived in perfect condition. I took a day off work to get everything hooked up. There are a few things that you need to be very careful with when handling these speakers. First of all they are very heavy. Secondly, they are covered with a thin cloth. There is nothing between the Speaker cone and the cloth. In other words there is no hard speaker cover just the very thin cloth. There are speakers on the front and both sides of these.Additionally, the center channel Speaker speakers are on the front and the top so you cannot put anything on top of it. Don't let any clumsy or drunk friends near these. Handle with extreme care. The Front Speakers are only 6 inches wide so space shouldn't be an issue however, they come with stands that are 11 inches wide so you need some clearance at the bottom. The BP-60s are almost 45 inches high and a foot deep. The center channel is heavy as well. It measures 21 inches wide, 6 inches high and a foot deep. I can't stress enough to handle with care. I also, upgraded my speaker cables to the best I could afford. You don't want to have to move these around too much. Each Speaker with the exception of the surrounds have powered subwoofers so you need a source of power for each. There are independent controls on the back of the Speakers for the subs. I turned them each up to 9 o'clock. Once everything was hooked up it was time to decide what to play first. I chose Pink Floyd's Animals (always one of my favorites). I turned off my Subwoofer to hear what these could do. I turned up the Yamaha about halfway at first. Needless to say the speakers reproduced the sound like it was intended to hear. I've been listening to this album since high school. I graduated in 1980. For the first time I heard things I never heard before. Impeccable! My Dogs started barking like crazy during the break. We were all enjoying the new sound. Although you don't have to turn the volume way up to experience the sound reproduction, I experimented with the volume on the next track (PIGS) and turned the Yamaha way up. I could tell that these speakers could handle the volume. The bass reproduction rattled the windows. If you put your hand in front of the subwoofer it is pumping out air that you could dry your hair with. No distortion, clear and clean highs and a superb separation that filled the room with sound. If you close your eyes you cannot tell where the sound is coming from. I also enjoy listening to a lot of live music especially the Grateful Dead and if you have a good recording you're at the show. A lousy recording will sound lousy. I eventually hooked up the surrounds and turned on my sub. You don't need a separate subwoofer but if you have one you may have to change the crossover frequency so that it only responds to the real lows. I watched an Avengers movie in surround and it was spectacular. I'm not a big movie watcher but if you are you will not be disappointed. I recommend these to anyone who appreciates sound like I do if you can afford the price tag. I believe that these will last a life time and are worth the money. I'm thinking about upgrading the Yamaha eventually. Happy consumer. ... show more

  • Big Package... Big Sound
Style: BP9080
These are indeed the BP9080x. Previous reviews for this listing are from an earlier model. This listing must have been updated at some point in the past. These speakers have gigantic sound. They could very likely cause hearing loss. They are not for small rooms or apartments. They will shake windows, doors, light fixtures and fillings. I have not heard one shred of distortion. They have a very very clear sound at all volumes. I've never owned a speaker this capable. The sounds stage is big, but you can hear distinct realistic sounds and notes as they were intended to be heard. I'm someone who likes to tinker and adjust levels for hours. They didn't take a whole lot of EQ'ing. I have a 5-6 year old Yamaha Receiver RX-820 with about 100W per channel. With the YPAO tuning, the results were spot on. There wasn't a whole lot to adjust. They just sounded great. At louder volumes it feels like being in the studio with the band, or small club with a really good sound system. I paired these with the 9080CS center. It's a great match. When watching movies, we are always having to pause to make sure the sound or noise really came from the movie. The 9080CS almost replaces a sub for those ultra lows. When do I use my DT ProSub 1000 with this setup, the sound is so thick, it's frightening. I'm not a huge fan of the all mesh. I wish there was some rich hardwood in the cabinet and I love to look at the drivers, but I'm guessing that would drive up the price. If you looking for sound quality at a lower price point than some of the other high-end brands then these are your best candidates. They are big. I didn't see or hear these in person before buying them. There's not a lot of info about them online (Why Definitive? Why?). Bought them as a leap of faith going off my experiences with the ProSub 1000. I am not disappointed. I went back and forth on the 9060 and the 9080. I saw these for an unreal price so I jumped on them. Did I say they are big? I feel like they are a little too big... My girlfriend calls them the Twin Towers. I call them the Towers or Power. But big package... big sound. If I would have seen these in person I probably would have went for the 9060 just due to the size. Now that I have them, I wouldn't trade them in. I just need to buy a bigger house now. Update: It's been about 6 months now. No complaints. I would buy them again. ... show more
