I have used these for decades for 4 and 5 string basses but they are getting a bit sparse. I hope they don't get phased out. Very good evenly balanced strings with a chimey top, and a good solid center to it. Growls nicely on an MTD five with rosewood board and maple over ash top. They settle-in to a really good sound after 2 weeks but since I like new strings, I change them about every month or less. They are round core so they give a bit and are more flexible than pro steels which are hex core. Ive tried many types and I always come back to these Blue steels for my MTD because they just have such a great warm but solid sound. They can sound aggressive or warm depending on EQ. They are much richer than nickel strings because they have so much more harmonic content. You can really hear the complex over tones on certain notes, especially when new. Nickel strings have a stronger fundamental with less overtones and sound a bit rubbery. These will definitely sound cleaner and brighter. Great for Pop, Rock, Funk, Praise n worship, Urban Gospel sound, but I would go with nickel if I were playing Jazz exclusively. ... show more

These strings are AWESOME!!!! If my bass didn't have these strings on it, I'd probably set it on fire! It's not even worth playing without THESE STRINGS!!!! If you're not using Dean Markley Blue Steels, you're obviously a complete amateur poser with no life and no future!!!! I can't believe you even bother wasting the planet's air if you don't have Dean Markley Blue Steel Strings!!!! Punch yourself in the face right now if you don't immediately install Dean Markley Blue Steel Strings!!!! Just stop being a musician!!!! Even if you play the tuba, you should have Dean Markley Blue Steel Strings on it!!!! Get some for your Stradivarius! Put a set on your banjo! If you don't play anything, get something and put Dean Markley Blue Steel Strings on it, QUICK!!!! Before it's too late!!!! Just kidding, but they are really good strings. Nice bright tone, no duds. These are my absolute favorite strings. Such a good sound and they last quite a while. Everyone in my band loves my bass sound and I know the strings are part of that. I'm a growing musician and it is almost time for endorsements. My only choice in strings will be these blue steels from Dean Markley. I've been using them for about 19 months. The medium light are my favorite guage. They're even my favorite strings for guitar also. I've been playing bass for over ten years and I've used all kinds of strings. Blue steel is superior to most.
