for total beginners? definitely not. these are super cute and, if you've got a project or two under your belt, make for a great next stepping stone to work on your skills more. everything you need comes in this kit, and there's some extra yarn (not too much) in the event of mistakes. the hook is pretty standard fare, but works well enough and is comfy enough to hold. the yarn itself is pretty thin and has a bad tendency to split, so learning to work around that can be a bit of a challenge for newbies; it also makes counting stitches a bit harder, especially on the white yarn. the included instructions and video pair well together and show everything you need to know, so if you get lost they can help out (especially the video). the instructions include pictures of how each finished part of the cats should look to help you get a feel if you've done it right, which is nice. ... show more

So, this kit is nice. The instructions are a bit iffy if you're a beginner or you aren't used to reading crochet directions. They do have a little sheet with crochet basics, but I lost it. So I decided to watch the video. The video was okay, but a little hard to follow. Luckily this kit comes with a roll of yarn to be used for practice and I've been using that as a warm up while I try to make a magic ring. And with that being said - the scissors are garbage. They aren't sharp and ended up shredding the end of the yarn, which wasn't helpful. So, while not completely beginner friendly (it's best to know the basics), the videos are helpful. ... show more

I couldn’t wait to get my hands on this kit when I saw it. I’m currently crocheting another kit in a Halloween theme and these kitties are just perfect for it. They are super cute! Pros of this kit: All materials are included: yarn, stuffing, crochet hook, stitch counters, safety eyes, yarn needle, and instructions. I like that the safety eyes have backs to them for attaching to the kitten—no gluing of the eyes with hot glue, which can ruin your project if you’re not very very careful. There’s also a pair of snips included, but I don’t get too excited about these… I’ve had several pop up in various kits I’ve gotten and none of them seem to cut yarn very well. You’re better off just using a good pair of household scissors, or embroidery scissors if you have them. The instruction book is pretty good. All stitches are explained and there are fairly good size pictures and the print job is decent, so you can clearly see what’s going on. QR codes are provided to take you to videos where you can get more in-depth instruction for learning the stitches. The pattern instructions for the cats themselves are in larger, easy-to-read text and are very clear. These instructions tell you when in the crochet process to apply the eyes, when to stuff with fiberfill before closing, reminders to put in a row marker, and how to assemble all the parts and pieces when you’re done crocheting. There are pictures at every step showing how the cat should look. There are no color changes to this pattern, just a bit of embroidery at the end, so you won’t have to worry about what to do at the color change and managing the thread. The box is very nice in comparison to other kits I've had. I’d consider this kit quite good as a gift for someone who wants to learn a new skill just because of the nice box presentation and the clear project instructions. I love cats - if you've read any of my other reviews, you know that. I am also trying to learn arigurumi crochet technique, because there are just SO many cute and interesting patterns using the technique. So I thought this kit combined those two things admirably. The box is lovely - compact, reasonable, with a list of contents and a QR code that connects to video tutorials. The insides were actually surprising, though. Included, a long with the required yarn to make the two cats, the safety eyes, etc, is a small skein of yarn to use when practicing stitches, and a really nice thread snipper/scissors, two separate crochet hooks, and two crochet manuals. And, delightfully, a vacuum sealed packet of stuffing adequate for both cats. Basically, literally everything you need, much of which can also be re-used if you want to make additional cats with yarn you've purchased separately. A very complete set with very VERY helpful visual aids, and I genuinely believe that this will be the tool to help me get the hang of the technique for future projects. ... show more

The whole kit would also make a nice gift for a crafter in your life, someone sitting in the hospital, for a birthday, a Christmas gift, a rainy day gift, a travel on-the-go gift, and more. I imagine making some outfits to put on these kitties like a witch hat a broom, and a dress, and other fun costumes like butterfly wings and a feelers headband... You can stitch the whiskers in the way you like besides the example shown, same with the noses you can fill those in so they can be seen better. this kit has EVERYTHING that is needed. Scissors (which can be brought in airplanes!), stitch markers, 2 hooks, yarn, stuffing, a yarn needle and eyes. The directions are very good! There is also helpful videos!! My cat turned out really cute!! This is one of the best crochet kits I purchased!
