  • Excellent instructions!
Size: Queen - Vertical
Impressive engineering. Whoever wrote the instructions for this kit should get a raise. They were the clearest instructions I have seen in a long time. Granted, the instructions have to be clear to build this thing. Overall, we are happy with the result and quality of the parts. Some notes: Count on spending a few hundred dollars on high-grade plywood, tools and fasteners. Be sure to clamp a straight piece of wood to your plywood to use as a guide as you cut with a circular saw. Do not try to freehand it, since the cuts need to be precise. When drilling through the plywood, clamp a scrap piece of wood behind so it does not splinter like a bullet hole when the bit comes out the other side. Get a helper and allocate about three days to cut, paint (or urethane), build, and install. Make sure the you have the necessary clearances in the room before installing (include light fixtures and ceiling fans). Also allow for rotation of the bed when it is about two feet from the wall. If your ceiling is below about 90 inches, you will have a hard time attaching the top header board to the wall, since you have to do it from the top. ... show more

  • Excellent parts...
Size: Full - Vertical
I hated building this bed. The hardware is exceptional. The quality feels amazing. The instructions are very easy to comprehend. You get to source your own wood, too! In the end though, I wound up spending an equal amount of money on this bed plus quite a bit of time building it over just buying a prebuilt! Of course, this bed is *leagues* better than anything you can find on the market because I used exceptional plywood and prime honey oak everywhere, so there's certainly that... Plus, when I lost some proprietary T nuts I couldn't find elsewhere, they shipped them to me at no charge, which is something I wholly appreciate. If you need to buy a kit for a murphy bed, go with Create-A-Bed. ... show more

  • Works great. Good instructions
Size: Queen - Horizontal
I was able to build a nice bed from this kit by following the instructions. I have a lot of tools and some experience with woodworking so this isn't for everyone of course. Although our woodwork isn't fully finished yet, we have used it already for guests

  • The kit and instructions are complete
Size: Full - Vertical
The kit and instructions are high quality. I think the black #10 3/4" screws are undersized, but not a big deal. The issue is not the kit, but the precision work required to build the darn thing. Except for the #10 3/4" inch screws, the components are high quality. In fact the kit seems almost trivial when compared to the work involved in constructing the wooden cabinet enclosure. Construction of the cabinet is a precise exercise while working with full size pieces of plywood. I replaced some of the smaller components with "select pine" and employed the "panel saw" services offered by my local home improvement store. You can rip the large plywood pieces with a hand power saw and straight edge, but a panel saw is better. Make sure the same person does all the sawing and double-check measurements before leaving the store. I made two trips to get the panel sawing done and the second helper appeared to have a bad a "night-before experience" and was not precise in his cutting efforts. I later had to square things up with a router. This project requires a lot of work. Also make sure there is sufficient head room to affix the cabinet to the wall. I only have 3 1/2" of clearance and had to modify the way in which the cabinet is connected to the wall. This project will test your love of woodworking. The DVD instructions show an ideal installation with a lot of room, a really flat wall, and plenty of ceiling height (you will need a helper to move the thing). Also the quality of work in the DVD, given cabinet grade plywood as the wood of choice, was not that of high quality furniture,e.g. splintering, rough edges, buried screw heads. My installation was complicated by the fact that I do not have the benefit of high ceilings and a really flat (plumb) wall. With an inner spring mattress purchased from a local "Mattress Factory" store, the bed has proved itself comfortable as my wife and I can attest. We decided not to add trim as the plain box looks good in the Mancave. Selection of the pull-down handles is an important design choice (we used brass looking door handles from our local hardware store that would not be out of place on a barn door). When all is said and done, it works. Pulling down the mattress is easy and smooth. Making the bed is a little cumbersome, but all in all a good choice. It fulfills the need we had. Using "select pine" for a couple of the smaller parts allowed me to reduce the number of 4 x 8 panels by one. Still, there was a lot of sizable scraps left over. Good luck. ... show more

  • Incredibly detailed instructions!
Size: Queen - Vertical
Okay, first off, the hardware that come with this kit is high quality. It will definitely last 30+ years. Also, the instructions are very detailed. I feel like a novice carpenter could navigate this build with ease. So, for those considering how much the wood cost would be. We spent between $700-800 on lumber. Hefty price because we went with birch plywood, which was about $85 per 0.75 inch sheet. You end up needing (4) 0.75 inch sheets, (2) 0.25 inch sheets, and about 12-15 pieces of solid wood boards. So you'll end up spending around $1,000 for the entire project at least. Not including what finish you decide to go with. Another thing to consider, for this to go smoother, make sure you have this equipment: table saw, skill saw, jigsaw, drill, drill bits, hammer, nail gun, clamps, forstner bits(very important!), and a helper (needed). My father-in-law had the saws, and helped me build most of it. My wife assisted me with the rest of it. It's well worth the time and money. High quality and very good looking. We're beyond satisfied with the result. WARNING - when installing everything into your desired location, MAKE SURE you secure the header to your wall first. We tried to secure the headboard to the studs before the header and the bed nearly snapped us (4 adults) in half. The gas pistons are no joke! ... show more
