Top Amazon Reviews

  • Two different lid types. One great, one less so.
Color: Licorice Lid Size: 24oz Style: Bottle
I really like these bottles. So much so I wanted several to rotate them through the dishwasher (or at least the lids). I started with two of the stainless body, licorice (black/gray) lids. They’re great, and similarly to the Contigo hot/cold mug I have, the mechanism flips open so it can more easily and thoroughly be cleaned (by hand or just better flow in the dishwasher). I’d seen some reviews and pictures showing a different style and complaining about mold. That style had a fixed mechanism and unlike the style that flips open, while in the dishwasher it will stay tightly closed. The flip open mechanism basically means it’s in the “open” position and water can flow through it while it’s being washed. I ordered a few more — one of the two packs was on a great price. I assumed this non-flip style from some reviews was just the older style and the flip one is the new one, but the new light blue “iced aqua” ones I got were the old style. They have the old models mixed in with the new. Looking more closely now at the pictures on Amazon, it does accurately show that it’s the older style if you know what to look for. In addition to what seems to me to be a clearly inferior and more mold prone mechanism, the old style doesn’t have a button lock. You can see in the pictures that some of them don’t. The lid that you can flip over the spout to keep dirt away from it also is a bit smaller. As of this writing, blue corn, dragon fruit, juniper, licorice, pink lemonade, and spirulina are listed and have the new style lid. These colors are also shown on Contigo’s website as colors offered, whereas the other colors listed here on Amazon are not shown on their current product list for “Cortland Chill 2.0.” There is also a Merlot and Lavender color for the new version on Contigo’s site that I don’t yet see on Amazon. Stick with those and avoid the older style. Beyond that, the new style is great. I used to use plastic water cups throughout the day, but my cats would get into it and I'd have to switch to a new one. Or they'd tip it over. With this, I can flip the little dirt cover lid over the spout to keep them from licking it, and while they can still tip it over and it'll make quite a thunk, it seems to seal solid and not leak. Of course it keeps things far colder than a plastic cup too, which is awesome. 24 oz holds a nice amount of water. I'd used my 20 oz Contigo hot/cold mug for water sometimes and it seemed like with ice in it, there wasn't much left for water and I'd have to refill pretty often. The lip is wide enough that I can get ice into it from my through-the-door ice maker. I have quite a few stainless water bottles I got as freebies from conferences with a lid so narrow I have to manually put cubes in one at a time, and even then some cubes are too big. I switched to these to replace those styles, and it's well worth the money just to not need to deal with that annoyance. With my LG through-the-door water, I do have to hold the bottle out a little bit and press the paddle trigger myself -- it's not quite wide enough to align with the water spout if I press the trigger with the bottle. But that's not really hard to do, even one handed, by just sticking one of your fingers out a bit. So far I'm sticking with the plain stainless body, as they say it can go through the dishwasher. I haven't tried that yet, but it's also very easy to wash by hand with a bottle brush. I may just stick with that, but the unpainted stainless probably will hold up better anyway. I do put the lid through the dishwasher, flipped open, as I think that will clean it better than I could manually. All varieties have dishwasher safe lids. The painted bodies are not recommended to go through the dishwasher, but their lids still can. ... show more

  • Cleaning the seal
Color: Chard Size: 24oz Style: Bottle
Like most other reviewers, I really like this Contigo Autochill bottle. It keeps ice for 24+ hours, doesn't leak, and is easy to use one handed. And like most other reviewers I was a little aggravated when I started seeing crud appear on the seal after a few months of use. But unlike some reviewers, who are willing to drop another $30 for a new bottle, I just cleaned mine. No, you cannot clean the seal or the opening around it with bottle brushed or even baking sodas -- they just can't get into that space. But with just a little effort, some water and CLR (Calcium, Lime, Rust) Cleaner from a hardware or big box store, you'll have a clean seal! You need to disassemble the top to access all the parts, but it's really simple: 1. Remove the top, turn it over to find four screws holding the autoseal assembly. 2. Remove the screws with either a small triangle screwdriver (often part of electronics repair kits) or a suitable small flat head screwdriver (works just fine—I used the one out of my Husky brand mini-screwdriver kit). 3. Put a 1:2 mixture of CLR:water in a bowl deep enough to cover both the autoseal mechanism and top body. 4. Let the assemblies soak for fifteen to twenty minutes (or less if you don’t have a lot of crud). 5. Remove and scrub the parts with an old toothbrush. Rinse with clean water. The mixture will not harm any of the plastic parts or the silicone seal. Don’t let the crud build up for long – clean the top this way at the first sign of contamination. We have two bottles – mine cleans up like new; my wife’s has one tiny spot of discoloration (not mold or crud) on the seal that I can’t seem to get off, but the rest is like new. You may also consider buying a trial or travel size of Efferdent denture cleanser – drop your pieces and a tablet in water, like Alka-Seltzer, and it might work as well. ... show more

  • It's Perfect, Nice Looking and Fits my Cup Holder
Color: Licorice Size: 32oz Style: Bottle
There are a few things that determine if a water bottle is “good” to me: • Look • How easy it is to drink water ( is it vented for easy water and air flow?) • Is it neat/leak proof? • Easy to clean • Capacity So, I am a Gallon of water a day drinker. It’s easier to drink four, 32 oz bottles than 5 or more from a smaller bottle. I typically use the 32 oz plastic bottles but, I have a 24 oz stainless steel auto-seal bottle that I use when I go to theme parks. The thing that I noticed is that of course, vacuum sealed thermal bottles, maintain their temperature, without regard to the weather around, for the most part. I found myself taking the smaller bottle to the gym because now that it is spring, my gym, and I am glad, they do not turn the air conditioning on while we work out, thus making it 80 °plus, in the gym. The stainless steel would stay cold but I needed it to hold more… ta dahhhhh! Enter, Contigo. One reason I stopped using my other smaller bottle is because I had an ER nurse that I know tell me that if I got in an accident and that thing went flying, I could get hit in the head. Well to my surprise, while I tried before this a 32 oz bottle that “fit” my cup holder, it fit so badly ( Ford Edge) that it would wobble and fall. This bottle, it doesn’t fit all the way down in the cup holder but it fits so snugly, not that I don’t think that it would dislodge in an accident but, I wouldn’t be surprised if it did not. I love the look of this smooth black color. The Auto Seal, doesn’t leak and it’s awesome for someone like me that hates those straws you have to touch. The auto seal is vented so you can gulp as much water, easily, with great air flow as you need. I really love this and I hope it never gets discontinued. Love this! The only drawback is… there is no way I’m chancing the Stainless Steel part and putting this in the dishwasher but I don’t see another way to TRULY clean the lid. This lid… I run It through the dishwasher at least every couple days because the underneath part, where the mechanisms are… there is no way to REALLY clean it otherwise. ... show more
