I bought these to replace a set of grinders as the ones I had never really worked well and then finally broke. Found this Cole and Mason set and so happy that I did. They arrived in a nice box already filled with salt and pepper so they would be wonderful to send to someone as a gift. The grinders are easy to use and adjust so that you get just the right size grains of pepper and salt that you want. They also evenly disperse the salt and pepper as well making it easy to cover the areas that you want. They are also stylish so you won't mind leaving them out on the counter top. It was time to replace my first Cole and Mason Pepper grinder I bought over 5 years ago. It was starting to skip while grinding. I looked at it. My husband took it apart. It didn't help. I groaned when I realized I was going to have to buy a new one. My search started about 6 months ago. I wanted the same Cole and Mason pepper grinder. The problem was there were many of the model I had around. I was having a kitchen tool party and decided to purchase a different brand through the party. It was expensive. It lasted less than 6 months before it stopped grinding. This is how I remember grinders. Breaking very easily. I ordered a different model of Cole and Mason grinders next. The problem was though it was adjustable, it was only adjustable by turning the top knob. It didn't really change the grind much. The insides were also small. I returned it. I didn't want to spend a ton of money on a grinder but then saw this one. It looked like what I wanted. This has the plastic barrel where the pepper/salt are kept. It is adjustable by turning the dial close to the bottom of the grinder. I decided to give it a try. This is just what I was looking for. The barrels hold enough salt or pepper that I am not constantly filling it. I can see inside so I know exactly how much is in each of them. They are beautiful. Something I like to put on the table. I can adjust the grind by using the dial near the bottom of the grinder instead of the knob on top. The pepper grinder: It comes set at 3. This is a perfect grind for me. It is easy to turn. I do find that when I try to grind very fine on 1 or 2, the turning is stiff and more difficult. Take the setting all the way to the max and the grind is coarse. The salt shaker: I have this set at 3 also. This is a fine grind. I think a little finer than table salt. Anything below that is more like a powder. ... show more

I replaced a Good Grips mill with this one and like this better. The grind selection is right on and works for every setting giving you a different grind with a similar volume on every setting. It's easy to refill and the surfaces wipe clean easily with a damp cloth. I have arthritis in my hands but can turn this mill easily and it feeds the peppercorns consistently so the amount of pepper is consistent for every turn. I'd say it's the best pepper mill I've owned and I've had some that cost a lot more money, altho it's fair to say this isn't cheap. However, its a good value because it's holding up well and seems to be very well made. ... show more

Am I particular about my pepper grinder??? You better believe it. Fresh ground pepper is essential to a good dish and you need a quality tool to deliver it. I’ve gone through several grinders looking for my starting quarterback and this Cole and Mason has easily won the job. It looks good, works easily, and is solidity built. Most importantly, it produces a large amount of pepper with each turn of the wrist at my preferred setting. Coarse is how I like my pepper and this product definitely does the job. Many pepper mills don’t come near to what I consider a coarse grind and as a result are worthless to me. I can rely on this star to provide pepper in my preferred form and it’s flexible enough to also put out an extremely fine grind if desired. Boy does this pepper mill carry the freight in the kitchen! It is the only one I have used that actually keeps the setting you select. It is easy to fill. It does take a bit of effort to change the grind size but the payoff is it does not clog up where you have to constantly tap it go get the peppercorns to fall into the grinder mechanism. The clear see thru hopper is a good feature so you can see your supply of peppercorns at a glance. One last thing, the volume of pepper this thing puts out is amazing. No more writers cramp where I once had to grind for 3-4 minutes solid just for a tablespoons of pepper. If this one holds up well, it is a keeper. ... show more

Overall a great pepper mill. Definitely notice a difference in grind size on each setting, from extremely fine to very course and everything in between. Easy to hold, easy to grind, works great except after a month or so of use I still don't find it very intuitive to adjust the grind setting. It should be super simple, but you have to grab/hold it just right to make the adjustment. I don't change settings every day so I have to play around with it each time. I know eventually it will become second nature, but I wish it was a bit easier. Minor gripe though - overall it is well worth the money! BTW, it came with peppercorns already loaded in, but I had also purchased the Tone's peppercorns and the Tone's are amazing - definitely the best peppercorns I have purchased! ... show more

Quality product. My last set, I did not realize there were plastic parts in the grinding mechanism, so after about 5 years, plastic started to come out with the salt (probably with the pepper too, but it's black, so didn't notice). This time, I researched a set that would stand the test of time. No plastic parts = yeah! When griding, you can feel the craftsmanship as it takes little effort to grind salt and pepper. Adjusting is easy, and they are beautiful to boot. I also really like the glass, so you know when you're getting low. Not the cheapest, but I plan to have these for the rest of my life (after going through 3 sets over the years), and they are worth every penny! ... show more
