The author is quite literate and was well-known for his slightly acidic, yet interesting reviews "back in the day" (1970's "Rolling Stone" magazine record reviews. I just never had gotten around to purchasing this book for my library. I finally did, and it was a veritable trip down memory lane reading many of the reviews. He's surprisingly mainstream-conventional (at least in hindsight) in nearly-completely praising ANY output from the Beatles, Stones, and Dylan. Beyond that, his tastes seem to extend heavily into obscure blues artists, maybe from boredom with a lot of R&R output? My record library and Mr. C's would be COMPLETELY different, with only a small common ground. But that's OK. I give him a TON of credit for his perseverance in listening to SO many albums and then attempting to describe them in illuminating terms. It's a landmark work ... show more

    • Informative and entertaining guide to 70's Rock albums
I bought this book when it first came out in 1981 and after all these years it is still never out of arms reach on my bookshelf. Christgau reviews and grades about 3,000 albums from the 70's in his unique and outspoken manner. While you may not agree personally with some of his reviews it is an entertaining and informative read. Many of the albums I have grown to love over the years I first found out about from this book.     • Misleading and poor reviewer
The title of this book is rock albums of the 70s. However the author reviews artist like Helen Reddy, peaches and herbs, merle haggard, Judy Collins, to name a small few. Certainly he has many rock artists in here as well but certainly has a slant for New York and East Coast style rock. His inclusion of Country, bubblegum pop, and disco acts make about 1/3 of his reviews. Sorely missing are rock blues legends like Rory Gallagher or mainstream rockers like AC/DC, Rush, and others. His cryptic and short reviews don’t lead to much insight on the albums. As a 60s through 80s rock purist, I was highly disappointed in the albums he reviewed and his grading. If you have no idea about the artists in this era (for example you are under 30) then this book may be for you, but if you are looking for solid insight and reviews of each artist albums this book is sorely lacking. I learned of no new artist in reading this book. I struggled to give it one star. Maybe I’m missing the point of his writing? Frankly, I’m not sure how this guy made a living as a music critic. ... show more

    • Not that great of a book
This collection by Christgau is revisionist history. The book is not a collection of the original reviews, but his edited reviews with new scoring. I wanted the original unedited reviews, but those do not exist in book form, so this is as close as you are going to get.

    • Biased and ulitimately non-musical
I wouldn't expect to be in total agreement with every review he makes, and of course I'm not. However, some of his opinions are totally simple minded and bizarre. He mentions The Outlaws as not being "outlaw" enough for him, and ignoring the classic guitar work on 'Green Grass and High Tides'. He rates this album lower than Alice Cooper's 'Easy Action', which sounded as if it was recorded on a Radio Shack portable cassette in a garbage can. That's just one example I could cite out of a hundred. He picks up the easy allegiances with the record industry, carefully shaping his opinions to fit pop culture. This book reads a lot better if you've never actually heard any of these albums, otherwise you're better off passing on this. No, I don't recommend it. ... show more

Before I'll buy a book I'll check it out from the library first. Bob has his nose so far up in the air he would drown if it rained. He is like one of the weaver's from The Emperor's New Clothes. Safe your time and money
