  • Been using this almost 9 years - still works perfect
Pattern Name: Sprayer
Well, I recently bought an electric backpack sprayer, because I wanted to try something new without the need of manually pumping my old sprayer, which is this sprayer. While I love my new electric sprayer, I am still totally impressed with this older one. The straps on my old one were nearly worn through, so I also bought a new replacement strap for it (this sprayer), and that was a little difficult to find. If you look at the pictures with this review, you'll see my original strap and how it is now only shredded threads holding the top and bottom of each side. At first glance, you may think I am making a negative statement of some sort about these straps. On the contrary though, I couldn't be more impressed with them. I just filled this thing with 4 gallons of water last week and took off spraying with no issue. These straps are made with some sort of super strong material. My goodness they are almost 9 years old, and have been carrying countless loads of 33+ pounds over and over, year after year, and they are still holding up though they are shreds at this point. Regardless, my review of this sprayer is that this thing has been a workhorse since I bought it in 2015. I have used it every year to spray all the weeds around the yard and fence line around our home, which is 2.5 acres, as well as my Mother's home, which is nearly 4 acres. It works amazingly well. It does require pumping it pretty frequently to keep a good amount of pressure on it, but I have no complaints. It is what it is. I have never had to change any of the seals on it. Somehow I did manage to break the big seal that goes around the top filter, which goes in first before the cap. I did that somehow right after I got it. I took super glue, and glued the seal back together, and it still works perfectly to this day, with no leaks or loss of pressure. I don't even remember how I managed to break it, but somehow I did. Regardless, a little super glue and patience and it was as good as new. The most important thing I can say about this sprayer is this. When you get finished using it, every single time, rinse out the tank with water and empty it a couple of times, as in use your garden hose sprayer to get down in it and spray around the sides and top and bottom to get all of the chemicals out, then empty it (2-3 times). Then fill it with another 1/4 to 1/2 gallon of water, pump it up several times, and lock the trigger in the on position with the wand pointed down at the ground, or in my case, gravel. Obviously do this in an area where the spray won't kill anything you don't want to kill. Keep it in the locked position spraying until the pressure is gone, and then empty the remainder of water in the tank. This will just flush the wand out really well. The point is, rinse it out well after every use (including rinsing off the big seal around the top filter) and this thing will last forever. What normally causes seals to go bad in these types of sprayers, is when people leave chemicals in them for a period of time, even if it's overnight. The longevity of my sprayer speaks for itself; almost 9 years old and still going strong. I am really digging my new electric one though. Still, I'll not be getting rid of this one anytime soon as it has proven itself to be extremely reliable year after year. I'd say this one will still be going strong long after my electric sprayer's extended warranty runs out and the battery goes kaput. The weed killer that I have been using with this sprayer, which is the best weed killer that I have ever found, is right here on Amazon called "Compare-N-Save 75324 Herbicide". It is far cheaper than name brand weed killers, and it kills everything. I mix 2-3 oz per gallon of water, and it kills everything. Weeds...poison ivy....everything (not trees though). It takes 7-10 days after you spray to see the results, but then it turns brown....because it's dead. Well, it kills everything except Yucca plants. Nothing kills Yucca plants. They come from another dimension or something and have root systems that go down 200 feet and spread out for a mile in every direction. Other than those though, everything else stands no chance with that stuff. This sprayer is definitely worth the money, and if you take care of it, you can pass it on to your great grandchildren. I did make a modification to this one. I took Gorilla tape and taped the hose around the right side of the tank, so that the hose is always there and doesn't get caught on anything. I didn't like it flopping around all loosey goosey. That's the only modification I made though. In fact I have had to change the Gorilla tape a few times over the years, as it wore out before the sprayer ever has. ... show more

  • Really good value - works a treat!
Pattern Name: Sprayer
A robust, well made and well designed home or semi-pro sprayer. Assembly was fast and easy; I was spraying within a few minutes of un-boxing the unit. The Chapin 61500 is super easy to fill and use. I am thus far pleased with the performance of the sprayer; it provides excellent pressure and good coverage. The pump mechanism is smooth and sturdy. This sprayer does exactly what it claims to do and will save you time, multiple refills and potential back pain when a large area requires spraying (verses a smaller hand-held unit). At right around 50 bucks at the time of this review, it is a bargain. Keep in mind that when full (4 gallons), this unit will weigh over 35 lbs. As such, I suggest filling it first, then placing it on an elevated surface (a deck hand-rail for example, which is close to the height of the tank bottom relative to your back when worn. Simply get one arm into one of the shoulder straps when elevated and then the other; snap the front cross strap together and you're ready to go. You can mix your solution by simply twisting your torso side-to-side once the tank is secured to your body. I also suggest freeing up the pump lever and the spray wand before you wear the tank so you can grab both easily once it is on your back. As others have mentioned, you will want to keep your left hand working the pump lever pretty much constantly as you spray to maintain pressure. After the first few minutes of operation, it will become completely intuitive - definitely the way to fly. I as well suggest when pumping that you raise your left shoulder as you push down on the handle to counterbalance the constant downward force on your left side. This simple maneuver will help you to avoid fatigue and possibly a sore shoulder or back. ... show more

  • Get the Old Model While You Can
Pattern Name: Sprayer
The thought of toxic chemicals dripping down my back didn't appeal to me. That's why the Chapin 61500 ProSeries Backpack Sprayer seemed to be the ticket. Even though it looked like a rinky-dink sprayer, both the pump and the spray valve originate at the top of the reservoir. Gravity wouldn't allow it to leak. Most of the Amazon Ratings rave about the sprayer. But, there's a twist. If you search for Chapin 61500 on Amazon, it will direct you to the new version. The new version has the pump and the spray valve on the bottom. I suppose that's why recent reviews complain about leaks. However, as of 3/17/23, they are still offering the old design. That's the one to select; not the "New Design". I do like the Chapin, but it's not without its faults. The unit has plastic grips for both the pump handle and the sprayer so they aren't flopping around when you're not using it. The sprayer grip holds it to the pump handle. Unfortunately, the grip holds onto the sprayer, but not the pump handle. I had to drill two small holes and ziptie the grip onto the pump handle; otherwise the grip would be sliding up and down the sprayer wand. The sprayer wouldn't shut off completely when I first used it. It would dribble out of the sprayer tip; a common problem with dirty valves. When I disassembled the valve, I found what appeared to be dried up lubricant around the valve stem. It must have been old stock A quick cleaning solved the problem. The sprayer worked well. It didn't require much pumping as another reviewer reported. It discharged a generous stream, so you may be going through product faster than usual. Even with the lightly padded, thin shoulder straps, the unit was comfortable on my back; even when full. You may have trouble getting the device on your back because of the weight. I placed it on top of my recycle bin before strapping myself in. Chapin had a good thing going with the old model; I wonder why they changed it. If you want a great leakless backpack sprayer, you better pick this old model up fast. ... show more
