I was considering a Kindle until I read a review from a man who suggested getting a Fire Tablet 8 instead because of the HD quality picture. I do have some vision issues and thought I would take his advice and see if the HD made a difference. It does. The size is perfect for reading from my Kindle Library. The battery life is long, and the buttons are on the top so there are no accidental closures of the screen. I got a refurbed model and it is in pristine condition. I can't believe how inexpensive a powerful little tool like this tablet can be. I don't do anything fancy, but I can stream video with a nice, clear picture. I managed to purchase and receive this before February 24 and after 3 months of usage, I must say it's a great device and it helped us a lot during war time. Battery is long enough to survive a few days of power outtages if used in moderation (despite some bloatware flaws of FireOS, it doesn't drain battery power in sleep mode, unlike some other Android devices that I had). This tablet also works well in cold (+5C) and damp conditions of bomb shelter. Ads are manageable and unintrusive. I bought this tablet mainly for news\manga reading and video content, and for that purpose it's excellent. As for "refurbished" quality, mine was like new, aside from one tiny 8mm scratch on the screen. It doesn't bother me at all though. To start with this is not an iPad or laptop, it does not do the same things or have the same purpose. It works great for what I need (email, kindle, Spotify, Netflix, web browsing, ring, Alexa calls, Skype etc cetera). I especially love it when I travel it's small and light, the battery lasts for a few days. I bought one for myself in plum and one for my daughter in blue. She loves it also, though she is upset with the parental controls, while I appreciate them. Every time she wants to download anything I get an email to review if it's age appropriate and either approve or deny it. It is much faster than my previous fire 7 and the camera seems better. I got this as a cheap tablet to run D&D maps on a digital game board. It did NOT suit my needs. But it is perfect for reading, playing game apps, and watching videos. It’s perfect for a child or as an e reader but don’t expect to be able to get any work done on it. It’s not very powerful, lacks compatibility with anything not Amazon, and is built to try to sell you more Amazon stuff. The Lock Screen is a perpetual add screen, the layout is not customizable at all, the App Store is limited to Amazon App Store so you will NOT have access to the full play-store, and the thing that really killed it for me was there is NO way to project or mirror the screen to a monitor unless it’s connected to a fire stick or fire TV. It won’t recognize any USB C to HDMI cable or interface. It’s a very cheap tablet that runs basic task very well. Battery is very good. If you’re ingrained into the Amazon ecosystem or have kids that want a tablet to play games on, it’s perfect for you. Personally didn’t suit my needs but I gave it to my wife who’s teaching her parrot to paint on it so it’s getting used and makes her happy. TEXT-TO-SPEECH --- WONDERFUL!!!! I am sight impaired so this it very important to me. This is my 3rd Amazon Fire. I loved my 1st, that it would read my Kindle Unlimited Subscpt books to me but the battery life was down due to usage so I traded it in on one only to find that Text-To-Speech had been all but been eliminated. (No doub they were pushing their Auditable Books subscriptions.) Finally, Amazon Fire recent reviews have been mixed so I bought this one because they offered Amazon Support which I did take advantage of. I totally intended to return it if it would not read my Kindle Unlimited Books to me. I am so happy becuase not only will it read my books, but I also have the added option of having Alexa read to me and thus I can use verbal commands to start and paus. So Happy!!!! I am entertained and no longer have to hang my head when someone asked me if I have read any good books lately. ONLY DRAWBACK: If I attach a wireless Bluetooth devise, I find that it stalls every few minutes and must be restarted, i.e. no speakers or wireless earphones. But I can live with that. ... show more

It was cheap, it works. Side caring was a bit tricky, but Google solved the problem nicely. It seems that Amazon is not going to make it simple to add material you did not buy from them.
