I'm not a metallurgist, but I have cast iron skillets, and this is not cast iron. I assume it's black painted steel. I guess it looks like cast iron, except for the shiny silver parts where the paint has rubbed off on the base of the pestle, and the edges of the mortar base. I don't think it would be that bad if I wasn't worried about ingesting black paint from the grinding process. ... show more

This little cast iron mortar and pestle is just right for my kitchen. It is small enough to fit in the palm of your hand, so it doesn't take up a whole lot of space for storage. The cast iron seems like decent quality and it is quite heavy despite the size. The interior is not perfectly smooth, which seems like it would aid in grinding. And it looks darn cute sitting on a shelf when not in use. I had wanted a mortar and pestle for a long time, and I'm quite pleased with this one. ... show more

This little baby is heavy and works beautifully. Weighing in at over 1 1/2 pounds, it’s heavy for its size. I love that you can actually make out the hammer marks in both the mortar and pestle. I got this to replace a small ceramic set that was chipped all over. This one is comfortable to use and does a good job. The pics show 1/4 tsp. fennel seeds that I crushed for about 20 seconds with minimal effort. A mortar and pestle is really a necessity for anyone who does a lot of cooking, and this cast iron one feels durable enough to be handed down. ... show more
