  • Disappointing...
I was really excited for this release, but aside from the oversized hardcover it doesn't really feel like a SE release. First, there are NO color pages after page one. This was a shock and the reason for the low star rating. A $30 hardcover manga should have all the original color pages. The translation is reused from the Dark Horse editions, with some minor corrections. The print quality is beautiful (they obviously used the original Japanese proofs), however the ink was smudged on quite a few pages. :( I hate to say this but the Dark Horse editions are superior in almost every way. This makes me hesitant to sink money into the upcoming LE Magic Knight Rayearth rerelease... Edit: I forgot the mention the "Clow Card" that comes with the book. It's a ridiculously cheap 2x3.5in trading card with art from a cropped illustration. :| ... show more

  • Beautiful, but not worth $30
Let me start by saying, the 3 stars applies only to this edition, and not to Cardcaptor Sakura (that I would give 10 stars if I could). I’ve got to say, I have some mixed feelings. I’ll start with the good things: 1. the cover is amazing, seriously my favorite CCS cover so far! It’s beautiful, it’s hard back, and I just want to stare at it all day. 2. The card, while disappointing that it wasn’t an actual Clow card, is cute and I like that when all of them are collected, they will form a picture (which I’ll probably frame). 3. This edition also has translation notes in the back (which I always like with any manga). Now for some of the not so good things: 1. there is literally only one color page in the whole book, and it’s the exact same image as the one on the cover. It’s huge let down after the Dark Horse editions had a ton of color pages. And speaking of the Dark Horse pages, while the pages in this one are glossy in texture, the pages are much thinner than the pages in the Dark Horse edition. It feels really fragile when you open it, because the pages are so thin, and the binding doesn’t feel very strong (which is ironic because it’s a hard back). Honestly, I expected so much more with this edition because it was a hard back, and because Kondansha did such a good job with the collector’s editions of Sailor Moon (which weren’t hard back, but had much thicker paper, and all color pages were included in full color), and the price being $30 made me think maybe they were putting a lot of effort into it. If you haven’t bought a copy yet, I would wait until the price drops, because I don’t think this was worth the full price (maybe $20, at most). If you’re just looking for a copy to read, I would go for the Dark Horse editions. ... show more

  • Were you not thinking Kodansha?
So, I have been a fan of CCS since I was a child. I'm 31 now. Imagine my surprise when this gem of a manga was getting such a beautiful treatment! I had purchased the Dark Horse omnibus before this version was announced and despite DH being really ify (98 percent of the time) I actually quite liked the books. Imagine my surprise when opening this beautiful foiled hardcover beauty to discover that not only the pages were thin to the point of seeing the page behind it, but also my fingers. Imagine my surprise when thinking we would get multiple color pages and seeing one. I spent almost the full price on this book and I honestly wish I hadn't. This is not worth the money it is set at. I am even surprised to say that the DARK HORSE versions are nicer as they at least have multiple color pages and the pages don't feel as if they are going to fall out of the binding if handled without EXTREME care. Your classic line is a huge disappointment thus far and I honestly hope you have some kind of market researched employed who look into these types of reviews for quality improvement. I am always more than happy to pay premium when a premium advertised release is coming out, but this, other than the amazing cover, is not. It's honestly a trap. Also, I would have thought the clow card was a nice touch, except you made them half the size. I understand that when placed together (no one is going to do this) it will create an image, but you're telling me that you had to cheap out even further and make them this size? No. This is horrendous. Even TOKYOPOP (fallen from grace) had beautiful clow cards when they had this license. I'm pretty sure fans would have wanted something like this rather than a puzzle. Seriously, get it together. If you're going to advertise this as a premium with nice pages (total lie) then make it so. I really do feel like everything described about this edition was a lie (except the outside of the book). I seriously hope Rayearth gets a better treatment, considering the price point. Now. Do me proud like the Sailor Moon Eternal editions and make every chapter start with a color page, or so help me. I won't really do anything, but I will begin to leave negative reviews with every edition and I will make sure to personally bring it to your attention on your website. Make sure you record this in your calendar as the day ANYONE prefers a dark horse print over a yours. That's sad, really. ... show more

  • Book is amazing, binding is terrible.
I absolutely love CCS and wanted to love this book so much but the binding is terrible. I don’t know if all the books were manufactured this way or I just happened to get a bad copy. But the binding is already falling apart and I just lightly opened it. The hardcover and art inside is absolutely amazing though. The book wouldn’t be able to last with this terrible binding. ... show more

  • Great read
This is my first ever time reading this, so I have not seen previous copies of it. My copy did not have binding issues, but I'm also gentle on my books and don't go cracking/bending the spine. It was a good story and I appreciate seeing the art in a larger than usual format. I would have liked a few more pages with color though ... show more

  • Love it!
So, I was hesitant to buy it because of the other reviews saying how fragile it is, etc etc, but I really wanted to read the series (hard to get the original). Anyway, I took a chance and I am so glad I did. Unless you're an aggressive page flipper, the pages are thinner than average printer grade paper, bit not made out of tissue, and it didn't fall apart in my hands like I honestly believed it would when I got it. I loved the story, and of course, already ordered the next one! ... show more
