In testing the Carbide lathe turning tool set, I found them to work well. They take the commonly found carbide replacement cutting units which can be bought for between $25 and $35 for a pack of ten on Amazon. I have another tool similar to these with a much longer handle which is nice for extra leverage at times. This set comes in a nice metal case with everything needed to change the cutting disks and attach the handles. Unfortunately while testing the tools I "found" a small metal screw end imbedded in the wood. I thought the tool was malfunctioning but then quickly found the metal piece. Only one side of the cutting disk was broken which impressed me. I turned it around and was able to continue after digging out the metal piece. This is a particularly a nice set for someone starting out in wood turning. The tools cut well and are easy to use without any grabbing or tearing of the wood unlike the disks which have a cupped edge rather than a flat sharp corner as an edge. ... show more

The media could not be loaded. I've reviewed so many off brand, china type carbide lathe tools and this set is, for the most part, is the same as all the rest. This set uses the exact same metal case all the others do, I mean exact. The case is good, just saying it is not unique. Even though I have quite a few sets like this, I picked this one because of the handles. They had foam on the ends and I thought they would be more comfortable to use and they are. The foam ends are soft and kind of grippy, nicer to use compared to the ones with no padding. Of course. Not a huge fan of the colors, but I am the only one that will see them. As for how they cut, they cut as good as all the other carbide insert tools I've have. They are very sharp and shave off the wood very nicely. You don't need to apply much pressure to remove the wood. Which is good, less chance of push them to much and them "grabbing". Cut just as good, if not better than my HSS tools. I am no turning expect, but I really like carbide insert tools. Probably the biggest reason I like them is that you don't have to sharpen them if you don't want, you can simply replace them, only takes removing one small screw. Plus replacements are not that expensive. And you can also turn them to get more than one use out of each insert. With the round and square inserts, you can get like 4 uses. The other big thing I like with this set, you get THREE handles. Most other kits you usually only get one handle, maybe an extension, so you have to switch out tangs all the time. With 3 handles you have 3 tools ready to use at your finger tips. Of all the sets like this I've reviewed, like 5-6 so far, I find this the best set for the price I've run across. At this price range I was concerned about quality of the tools and replacement bits. Tools were better than expected. Tool bars fit snugly in handle when two set screws are tightened. No wobble that would ruin a turning. Carbide blades are sharp. I prefer the pointed detail cutters versus the rounded tip. Nice surprise was the carbide cutter is a match to USA made ones from Ultrashear, so no concerns of replacement bits. ... show more
