  • Works great for a decent variety of mediums
Size: 9x12 Style Name: Drawing, Black Product Packaging: Side Wire
Having done digital art as a hobby for over 10 years, I've started doing art with physical mediums. I'm no expert and I have a narrow taste. I tend to draw/paint nature scenes, usually with mountains, and nighttime/space scenery. I do have some black canvases that I'm saving, since I'm finding painting with an actual brush and airbrush is very different compared to using a stylus. But I don't want to use up a bunch of black paint for nighttime/space scenery as I practice. This paper perfectly addresses that, and for the most part it works well with mediums. For writing utensils, I was shocked to find that watercolor colored pencils work VERY well on this paper. Charcoal colored pencils and pastels really pop on this paper when bright colors are used. I've got some calligraphy marker pens that I used in mixed medium art, and they show well on this paper, but they don't pop the way watercolor/charcoal colored pencils do. Like the marker pens, standard colored pencils do show, but don't pop. To my great disappointment though, my favored gel pens really don't show too well on this paper. I really have to scribble to get them to show on this paper, and I was looking forward to using my neon gel pens on this paper. Fineliner pens do not work at all on this paper. However, mine are largely dried up from lack of use, so I could be wrong about the fineliner pens. As for paint, again, you'll want to use brighter colors, though dark colors like blue and purple can really add some sweet, subtle depth on this paper when used right. I've only used my airbrush on this paper, and while the paper did curl and lift a little, none of the paint bled. Still, I'd be wary of using watercolor on this paper, especially if you prefer wet-on-wet painting. Heavily thinned acrylic or oil paints might soak and bleed through as well. Overall, I'm really happy with this paper. It's a true, semi-gloss black and the paper is fairly sturdy. Since I prefer corner-taping my paper to my desk for art, I appreciate the fact that the papers are perforated in the book, so with a bit of care, you can cleanly tear out pages from the pad. If I still need black paper once I use this up, I'll be back for more! ... show more

  • Love this paper!
Size: 9x12 Style Name: Drawing, Black Product Packaging: Side Wire
I got this to do art projects with my gr. daughter. We started with chalk drawings and they came out so vibrant on this black paper. It's a very nice weight and can be used for all sorts of arts & crafts and the price is good too. I'll be using it for some of my own art as well.

  • My son keeps buying these sketchbooks over and over
Size: 9x12 Style Name: Drawing Product Packaging: Side Wire
So that speaks to their quality. He will not use any other brand. I'm not familiar enough with different papers to know the difference, but his continual use of this brand speaks well.

  • I am in love with this paper.

This paper is thick and holds up well to acrylics. Colors pop off the pages. I will most definitely be purchasing more.

Size: 9x12 Style Name: Drawing, Black Product Packaging: Side Wire
no one has mentioned how thirsty this paper is,I tried acrylic paint pens ,water based metallic paint brush pens, and metallic watercolors and this paper drank it all up and the colors faded fast..leaving it dull,i dont know what to coat the paper with so it wont do this, but it prob isnt worth the effort..the prisma pencils look dull also on this paper,..its a let down,i will try gouache paint and acrylics on this paper maybe with better outcome.. ... show more

  • Black Paper Sketchbook Hides Some Pleasant Surprises
Size: 11x14 Style Name: Drawing, Black Product Packaging: Side Wire
This is a review of the Canson Black Drawing Paper Sketchbook. So far I have tried two pads of the paper, about 80-90% of each pad. I have painted with watercolor (using local water from the tap), with sumi ink and with acrylic brushes. I have also used pencils, ballpoint pens, Micron pens, and even Sharpies. I believe that this is, by far, the best sketch paper/drawing paper available right now. I use it a lot. Pros: -Excellent surface, yet smooth enough to easilly pick up and move around. -Smooth and durable paper, excellent for broad lines. -No bleeding with most tools. -Bleeds between layers or when sliced with scissors. -Watercolor comes off with a bit of scrubbing, but is more easily removed when wiping it with a finger. -Drawing is bold and crisp, easy to read. -Can be cut into panels and sewn, even glued together. Cons: -Can't say I have any. Other: -Smells like real paper. Overall a great product. -Good for pencils, ballpoint pens, Micron, sumi, watercolor, acrylic. I have not tried this with markers, fine tipped pens, or Sharpies, yet, but I suspect that it works with their ink as well. -One can use tape on the surface without it leaving a residue or bleeding. ... show more
