  • Outstanding Value
Is this lens at par with more expensive RF lenses from $3,000 to $12,000? Of course not. Is F11 an ideal aperture? Of course not. However, I picked this up for roughly $500 and under decent light conditions, it provides exceptional results. Canon has done a nice job here. As others have stated, the lens is extremely light and can be handheld all day long. I have more expensive Canon options and I feel the the autofocus on the RF F11 600 is pretty responsive. Also, the form factor of this lens is small and manageable. With this lens, you get A LOT MORE than you pay for. The more I use the lens, the more I like it. If you are willing to spend a little time getting acclimated to the RF F11 600, it will provide outstanding value. I have to believe that the 800 is every bit as good as this. ... show more

  • Good So Far/Not for Everyone
I received the lens today and have only done a few shots but I am liking what I am seeing. I will update this review after I have used it for a while. Unfortunately the price and the long focal length will attract a lot of people who will not know how to use it because they don't understand the basics of photography. If you cannot clearly define reciprocity as it relates to photography, don't know the Exposure Triangle, understands the mathematics involved, etc., then you will probably will not like this lens. This is not a criticism of the lens. I am looking forward to using the lens and my first impression is that the image quality will be good and the small size and the lighter weight will be a boon for older shooters like me. Upate: I took the lens out for a while yesterday and am really pleased with the results. There is definitely a learning curve and I still believe this lens is not for everyone. However, if you know the technical aspects of photography or are willing to learn, this lens is a reasonably priced way to have a long telephoto that did not exist prior to this new lens. ... show more

  • Excellent value for the price
This lens is absolutely excellent, so long as you are planning to use it in situations where it is meant to be used. Think wildlife in well-lit situations, or sports that happen during the middle of the day. The autofocus speed is nothing to complain about so long as you manage your expectations. You simply can't find a 600mm anywhere else for anywhere close to this price. Keep in mind that the autofocus will be limited to the center of the image, so as to say- no edge-to-edge autofocusing even with the R5. This image was captured in Jackson Hole on the 600mm wide open and handheld. The camera used was the Canon r5. ... show more

  • It is a keeper.
It is the first 600mm lens that can be really hand-held which is a selling point to hobbyists. It just weights 2 lbs and creats a good balance on my Canon RP camera. The OS system works well. I can understand why this is not a pro lens since STM and mirrorless focus are not fast enough and F11 is too dim for pros. The lens is not weather-proved either. But these applications are not mission critical for most bird-hobbists. If you need a lens you can carry effortlessly from your neck on a sunny day and leave your tripod behind, this is the lens for you. It works OK when it is cloudy. But ISO over 10,000 will introduce some visible noise and lower sharpness. On a sunny day, when ISO is below 1000, Canon Digic 8 processor gives completely noise free full-frame images which blows you away in sharpness. That's why I keep it. On low light conditions, a hobbist like me would not try to shoot birds and will carry other fast weather-sealed lenses. I like the big focus ring and in-viewfinder focal distance display which really help to manual focus and supplement the slow AF. It works and no stressed muscles anywhere makes the hobby more enjoyable than laboring. To give another AF tip after a few days of use, set your camera to servo AF instead of single-shot AF will be a lot faster on a STM long lens like this. This will drain battery faster so get a couple of more batteries. ... show more

  • Is not compatible with Canon EOS 80D or 90D
I was so excited to get a 600ml lens at this price. I thought any Canon lens would fit any Canon camera. I was sadly mistaken. It also is not compatible with the Canon Extender EF 1.4x.So my low rating is only due to that, as I do not know how it would perform, hopefully someone else has better luck than I did. ... show more

  • RF600 doesn’t disappoint.
I was sceptical that an f11 lens would be useful but decided to try it out. The price seemed very reasonable. I was very surprised at my results. Obviously you will have to use the lens in good light and even then shoot at relatively high ISO’s but the results are quite good. Image stabilization in the lens coupled , in my case, with IBIS in the R5 made hand holding doable as low as 1/60th with good sharpness. The lens is not an “L” lens and the build quality is ok. Very good for what you pay. I wish they had supplied a lens hood. All in all a very nice lens for the price. More for events and the beach than for birds. I’m glad I bought it and thanks to Amazon for the very fast delivery. ... show more

  • I was skeptical, but it's been wonderful
I have been using the Sigma 150-600 contemporary lens for years but wanted to upgrade to an RF lens to use with my R6 body. This has been wonderful for bird photos. Being stuck at 600 mm and f/11 is a bit limiting, but not nearly as much as I anticipated. The biggest perk of this lens, is I can get great photos without using a tripod/monopod, unlike the Sigma lens. I also purchased a 2x extender which has been helpful. I set the ISO to get the right depth of field I'm after, and thankfully the R6 has a pretty low noise level. I use Topaz to get out any remaining noise in post processing. ... show more
