This book combines practical woodworking technique with practical canoe use experience... [It] covers every single aspect of canoe paddle building. -- Sawdust and Shavings Despite the growing interest in making paddles and canoes, it can be difficult to find reliable information on that craft -- except for this book. First published more than a decade ago and having sold 35,000 copies, Canoe Paddles: A Complete Guide to Making Your Own is the ultimate modern guide to the traditional craft for both the how-to beginner and the skilled woodworker. In Canoe Paddles: A Complete Guide to Making Your Own, longtime canoeist and woodworker Graham Warren provides detailed information and guidance to make a canoe paddle that will be used with confidence and cherished for generations. The book is thoroughly illustrated with photographs, line drawings and plans with measurements for: How to make a paddle having a single blade, a bent shaft, or double blades How to protect a paddle with oil or varnish What to look for when test-driving a paddle How to decorate a paddle How to care for and repair a paddle. • Complete!
If you want to make paddles (or things like that... that need to have curves flow into one another), that is THE book. Well explained, many useful techniques to quickly easily achieve a finished product.

  • Buy this book and get to work!
I thought the book was great, very informative . What Graham is doing is telling you that there is more than one way to make paddles. You can use mostly power tools, or hand tools. Use what you have or get what you need. Paddle making is a good excuse to get a few new tools.i.e. Lee Valley spoke shaves, etc. Learn how to make half patterns from a table of offsets. Then go to it.Don't get overwhelmed, just get started. You will soon be hearing the song of the spokeshave. Your first paddle will be better than anything you can buy. Use it and you may see things you want to change on the next ones. Keep making paddles. Each gets better and easier. You will build confidence quickly and soon you will be working mostly by sight, Not laying out so much and having much more confidence. Grahams knowledge of paddle making is unsurpassed. This book is worth 3 times its cost. ... show more

  • No other resource comes close
I have not seen a book that covers more about paddle design and making that this book. It has a good review of Native American paddles and historic designs. Good organization and well written. There are some areas not covered like the Ozarks and wood choices there. If they missed that I am sure there is till ore area to cover. However, to be fair it would be hard to be that comprehensive without making the book unwieldy. Overall, nicely done. ... show more
