After application of two light coats of satanite refractory coating it performed as expected. The primary application was done with a brush and mixed to a consistency of a thick chocolate milkshake. It was then allowed to dry a couple of days with the help of a being in the shop rafters -hot and dry-between coats. Be sure to set it up on some fire bricks.... I wouldn't say it was packed *well. An effort was made, and nothing was broken, but there was a fair bit of crushed styrofoam floating around. Most of the screws for the tongs were loose and trying to break free of the box, but none of them escaped. Just one of them took a minute to find. I get that it's an awkward shape and tricky to pack. And yeah it got here just fine. I coated the insulation with about a pound (dry) of satanite refractory mortar to both keep the fibers under control and make the insulation last longer, and i let it cure for 2 days. As others have said ALWAYS put a piece of cardboard between the firebrick and the crucible because the ashes it leaves behind will prevent them from sticking. I also went to a thrift store and got a large stainless steel slotted spoon for skimming off slag and a muffin tin for the ingots. I got some long-reach pliers from the low-dollar hardware store too. And welding gloves, of course, which i already had. Took less than 20 minutes to melt down a pair of VW 1.6D pistons. ... show more

Sorry for the long write-up, but it is worth the read. TL;DR It is well built, it has everything you need to hook it up to propane and smelt. The build quality is excellent. If this is your first one, do expect to want to get a few additional items before you use it. I have been looking into this for a while as I want to start doing lost pla casting. which is almost identical to lost wax casting. I've even considered building my own. This is a good starting point for smelting. The 6kg smelting size is good for me. I do not need anything larger. It includes all you need except for a wrench to assemble and the propane to get it running including the hose and regulator, crucible, tongs, Teflon tape, and even a ceramic pad to set the crucible on. Assembly was easy, and flame adjustment was simple and easy as well. it was melting aluminum within 10 min of lighting it. It seems well built, I like how it was made with welded stainless steel. The only thing i see to watch out for is the Ceramic Fiber blanket is exposed on the top and could potentially get damaged, but this is far from a show stopper. The tongs can be used for both living and pouring. and the crucible is good. Although this kit is good, Before I do my first project I want few more things ... Hopefully, this list will help you in preparing as well. - Gloves are a necessity or i will burn my hands, i am going to get a pair of welding gloves. - Something to set the ceramic pad for the crucible and my molds on. I will get a 1 to 2 ft square concrete garden paver for that. - A fire extinguisher. - An ingot mold or a steel muffin pan to pour the excess metal into that I do not pour into my mold. - Optional, Additional tongs, a specialized one for lifting and a specialized one for pouring. - Optional, spare #6 crucible, Eventually i want a dedicated crucible for each metal type so I do not cross-contaminate metals. - you will need a 20 lb propane tank (i have one already) I understand they should last for 10-15 melts - Molds for whatever I am casting (or make my own molds which is the ultimate plan). overall, I am very happy with the furnace. It seams to be very well built nice thick metal and everything looks nice except the pot that sits down inside. When I opened the box I found it to be cracked pretty bad but not a huge deal I don’t suppose just wish it was all wrapped up a little better for shipping.

This is a great little furnace that I'm using to melt aluminum cans. It's easy to use and provides plenty of heat for melting aluminum and no doubt other metals. The insulation blanket is not coated so I followed typical procedures to stiffen and then coat the blanket with refractory mortar. This seems to be pretty much standard procedure for a longer lasting furnace and possibly for safety as it might be possible to breath the fibers into your lungs. If you are interested there are many videos on YouTube. Once prepared this furnace worked great. It melts metal in short order. Be sure to use welding or fireplace gloves the heat here is no joke. Personally, I also wear a leather apron and a face shield just in case. ... show more
