  • A great way to learn about computing
Size: 4GB RAM
I used this kit together with a Freenove Starter Kit to build many of the 26 projects supported by the Freenove kit. The two kits blend seamlessly and provide a easy way to assemble simple projects demonstrating many aspects of computing and electronics. The processor board fits into the case nicely and allows access to all the many ports as well as the 40 pin connector that connects to the Freenove kit via a ribbon cable. The operating system and a lot of software was preloaded into the micro SD card and made setting up the processor easy. I was not able to get tech support from CanaKit, but was directed to the Raspberry Pi forum where I got good support. I found it convenient to use the VNC Viewer app on my PC as a remote terminal rather than a separate keyboard and mouse dedicated to the Raspberry Pi. However, I found that it was necessary to have a TV connected to the Raspberry Pi vie HDMI in order for the remote terminal to function. I learned via the forum that I needed the Version 11 Bullseye OS to easily avoid this problem, and my kit loaded the Version 10 Buster OS. I decided to stay with present VNC Viewer terminal setup and just keep TV connected. All in all a great way to learn about computers and a base from which to build all kinds of projects. ... show more

  • Fun to put together and works great!
Size: 4GB RAM
I bought this to run OctoPrint for my 3D printer. It was fun to put together, came with everything you needed and pretty decent instructions. I consider myself to be pretty tech savvy, but I had never put a Pi together or used one before. Followed the directions to assemble everything and then watched a YouTube video on OctoPrint setup and installation and had this thing running my printer in under 2 hours (while watching a movie). The included on/off switch and the case and other features were a great addition to everything else that was included in the package. It was a little expensive but with the chip shortage, it was in line with anything else I found after days of researching and it came with a lot more little touches that made the overall package a decent deal. The fan is a little noisy on high but I could probably switch it to lower speed with what I am using it for and it is not loud enough that I would deduct from the overall score. Just something to mention and my only real negative thing to say about the whole product, so I would definitely encourage you to get this one if are considering it. ... show more

  • A skeptic NO MORE
Size: 8GB RAM
I was in need of a cheap computer for simple document creation, website use for job applications, and similar. I considered used devices through online market places. This has resolved any concerns I would have and serves my needs and then some. The platform works very similar to windows. The free libre word processing, spreadsheets, and so on match Microsoft office. No subscription fees for libre and free updates. The same goes for the operating system platform. The SD card I selected is only at 1/3 capacity. I have installed several programs. I haven’t found a drawback or some thing that I cannot do and need windows. The instructions are quite simple and it is easy to get started. I found if I had any questions a simple Google search took me to the right direction. I have never used a device that wasn’t Windows based or Apple. This is meant for pretty much anyone to easily use. ... show more

  • Great kit to get started
Size: 4GB RAM
This kit is perfect to get started with a project. This is my second one. The first one didn't get fully used, as I made a different case and added a touch screen. This second one is pretty much everything I need for my project. The power supply is great, and had no issues driving the touch screen, and USB accessories. If I could change anything, I'd make the case securely close. Not much of an issue once you plug in to the ports, but that's not my idea of securing a case. ... show more

  • Glad I got it when I did
Size: 8GB RAM
This machine marks the first actual desktop computer I've had in ages, and it's an interesting little piece of work. Instructions were simple and straightforward, and worked quite well right out of the box. Not superfast, but still very useful overall. All that's needed to use it is a monitor, mouse, and keyboard. And it works quite well with my wireless mouse and keyboard. Perhaps the only downside with mine at least is getting the Bluetooth to work. And given the 8GB version is now hard to come by, getting the more advanced version is a plus. Great little project item. ... show more

  • CanaKit Good - Pi4 Bad
Size: 8GB RAM
CanaKit always does a top notch job on their Pi kits. Unfortunately it’s not their fault that the pi4 is junk. It doesn’t compare to the previous models. For the supposed boost in specs it’s performance is abysmal. Compatibility with past software packages is terrible—especially with regard to graphics related software (just research MPV on the pi4 for example.). I am happy with the kit but after 2 years and 2 separate tries on 2 revisions of the pi4 l, I’ve given up on the rPi series. It’s just garbage now. CanaKit thumbs up—rPi Foundation thumbs down. My advice is that if you can still find a rPi 3b+ you’ll be far better off. If you don’t believe me read around. Desktop performance on Pi4 is horribly disappointing. If you insist on a pi4 make sure it’s only as a headless / console based install where graphics are not needed. ... show more
