  • Easy pad check
This makes brake pad checking a breeze. No need to remove the wheel if you have open slot wheels. Just extend the probe, put it on the rotor and press in until the tang contacts the back plate of the pad. Then read the results on the tool. Most pad back plates are a standard size, so this deducts that size and gives a reading of how much pad material is left, letting you know when it's time to replace the pads. Fits in a shirt pocket like a pen. Small, compact and a very useful safety device. 5 stars. ... show more

  • Handy little tool, once you figure out how to use it
It took me a bit of time to figure out how to use this brake pad measuring tool from camrusic. The tool doesn't come with any instructions and the photos aren't exactly clear if you're new to this tool. There is a "foot" along the outer metal tube and a sliding inner dowel that is used to measure through to the brake disc surface. The foot is to seat on the back of the brake pad, along a seam surface between the caliper and the pad, and then you push on the sliding measurement rod to touch the rotor surface. The place where the line associated with a number lines up with the outer base indicates how many mm of thickness remains on the pad, presuming the 6 mm standard backing plate design. The tool is inexpensive and it's useful when you're trying to quickly assess a car's brakes. ... show more

  • Good for a quick inspection, but cannot accurately tell shoe depth
As a professional technician, I find anything I can use that can help speed processes up as a boon. With a car in the air this can turn into a quick inspection tool, however it does have some drawbacks which I will list below: 1: The measurement is entirely dependent on the backing plate of the brake pad, and older pads that have rusted could give a false depth measurement. Since the majority of pads that will be checked are older, this could pose an issue for exact measurements. However, as a tool to get a general idea of brake conditions it will still work. 2: It does state that this can be used for determining brake shoe thickness remaining, however since this requires a backing plate of a specific depth it will not read properly - brake shoes have a much thinner backing plate than most pads which could render this reading inaccurate 3: There are absolutely no instructions - while a basic tool as such is pretty easy to figure out, instructions on how to accurately use it and calibrate it would be beneficial for those who are new to a tool such as this. This is a decent tool for a technician to keep in their breast pocket alongside a tire pressure gauge, tread depth gauge, pen light, and pen for quick inspections. However, I personally found the style in my pictures that I double checked accuracy with more accurate and less easy to deform - that steel plunger and lip can very easily become deformed and make the tool inaccurate! ... show more

  • Super easy to use but has caveats. Best for quick preliminary checks.
This little tool can be very handy for checking your (outer) brake pad thickness without removing the wheel. It's super quick and easy. But it assumes a pad thickness, and you might need to roll the vehicle a little to get the proper access through the wheel. The tool should be perpendicular to the brake. These caveats are not show-stoppers but minor considerations. The current list price might be a little high for the tool too. The build quality is fine, but it is also very simple to construct. I plan to use it for quick, cursory checks of pad thickness. If the numbers are low-ish, then I'll remove the wheel for a real inspection. ... show more
