  • Line spooling issues possible
Style: 1000
I took my Elate 1000 out for the first time today. It was paired with an Okuma 6'6" ultralight rod, and balances well. The reel is smooth and quiet, as I would expect on a brand new 10 bearing spinning reel. Unfortunately, the only fish I caught was a 8" fallfish, so I have no experience with it under load or on the smoothness of the drag. I did have two issues with it relative to the 4# Trilene XL line installed. One, I had more than one occurrence of loose line loops getting behind the rotor and sometimes wrapping around the handle. I attribute part of this to the wind, part to the very light line, part to the coil memory on newly installed line. However, I haven't had that experience with other reels and other mono lines. I normally don't use anything under 6# or 8# line, so perhaps I'm not attuned to the subtleties on smaller line installation. Still, that only rarely happens with my other reels & line, so it was very noticeable. And annoying. The issue seemed to go away after about one hour or so of use, so maybe it was the coil memory working itself out. Still, if you're going to use 4# line on this reel, be aware of potential problems with newly installed line. The second issue was the way the line wound on the rotor. After I installed the line, I noticed the windings at the back of the rotor were larger than on the front of the rotor. This uneven spooling is due to the relative position of the rotor on the main shaft, and could result in mine being evenly spooled, front-loaded, or rear-loaded. Cadence apparently is aware of this variance, and to their credit, includes a small plastic bag with different spacing washers and instructions on which one to use to get the line evenly spooled if it doesn't go on right the first time. Commendable. But, it really doesn't become apparent until the spool is almost full. I didn't feel like stripping all the line off, taking off the rotor, replacing washers, and re-spooling the line right away. I'll do it when I need to add or replace the line I originally installed. The uneven spooling didn't seem to affect the casting or retrieve. Now that I think about it, that may have contributed to my first problem with line getting behind the rotor. Maybe I will have to remove and reinstall the line after all. So, some initial issues related to line. The reel looks good, is smooth in operation, and light. And it was discounted when purchased, so a good value too. I'll reserve judgement on its performance until I actually begin to catch some fish with it hopefully larger fish. I'll update my review then. UPDATE: I switched to 6# line in hopes of improving the line twist I encountered the first few times out fishing with the 4# line. It didn't. I switched from Berkley Trilene XL 4# line to Bass Pro Mr. Crappie 6# line, and that was awful I got line twists and tangles so bad, I had to cut significant lengths off and re-tie 3 times. Then it did it again, except this time, unknown to me, the line had slipped behind the rotor and was wrapping itself around the main shaft during the retrieve. Oddly enough, that didn't seem to affect the actual retrieve until it was too late and just stopped. I had to take the spool off and cut the line wrapped around the shaft. That ended the fishing day. That evening, I swapped out the line again, this time for 6# Yo-Zuri Hybrid line. I fished that this morning, and again encountered twists and tangles, although not as severe as with the previous two lines. Once I had cut off 1/4-1/3 of the spool capacity, it seemed to settle down and fish fine. The lesser amount of line on the spool did not seem to affect is casting distance, so I was satisfied once once that state was achieved. However, it seems as if the reel is designed to twist line and/or let it slip off the spool to the rear and create a grand mess. I have not had this problem with any of the many other spinning reels I've had, and that makes it very aggravating. I wanted to like this reel. It has light weight, proper line capacity, is smooth, had a nice drag, and looks good to boot. However, based on the many problems I had with line tangles, twists, and having it slip off the back of the spool several times, I would NOT recommend it. Hopefully someone at Cadence will pay attention and tweak the design to get the full potential out of this reel. But I won't hold my breath. ... show more

  • Elate 1000 pairs nicely with an Okuma Celilo UL Rod
Style: 1000
I didn’t have a very good experience with my first reel. Line lay was not good (even after changing washers). The nut to hold the handle on wouldn’t stay tight enough, and the reel wasn’t smooth at all when retrieving line. I sent it back and Amazon sent me a replacement. Second reel has been great! None of the issues I had with the first one. I paired this reel with an Okuma Celilo 6’ UL rod and it is a great combination. I use this primarily for fishing crappie in moderate cover with 6 lb. test mono. The only reason I gave a 4 star review is because of the issue I had with the first reel. Update 5/5/21: I’m now having problems with my second reel. As of yesterday, the drag is now silent (clicking sound is gone when there is resistance on the drag) I really like this reel but it just isn’t dependable so I am changing my rating to 2 stars. If you decide to purchase this reel I hope you have better luck than I’ve had with it. Update 5/14/21: The seller reached out to me and provided a solution that I am very happy with. I am moving my rating back to 4 stars. However, I would rate the sellers customer service at 5 stars! ... show more

  • First impression
Style: 3000
Just fished this reel (the 3000) for the first time this morning - so this is obviously just an initial impression of a brand new reel. But... it casts soooo far. Seriously. I bought this almost randomly to replace a similarly priced broken spinning reel I bought two seasons ago and this is better - by far - than the other one (also a 3000) was when it was brand new. I haven't read the online manual, but it came well greased and I think that may be the key to it's success. We'll see, but I was so impressed I had to chime in. Follow up after several weeks... Still really like the reel. It's solid. But the reviews for it - I didn't notice this when I "randomly" bought it - are weird and seem phony. For example, somebody named "Bibby" - who previously reviewed a hat: "Wearing a hat, the hair will not run around, nor will it appear on the face, it is very convenient, and it will not fall off easily, I like it very much." - had this to say about this reel: "The hook line is of good quality, strong, easy to carry, and flexible. It is the first choice for fishing enthusiasts." So yeah. And the top, most like review looks bizarrely photoshopped to me. And a lot of the other reviews are weird. But... it's been a really good reel for me so far. Just hope I don't have to join a cult to keep it. ... show more

  • Cadence Elate Spinning Reel - Highly Recommended
Style: 4000
Right from the start, as soon as I opened the box, I noticed how nice, solid and rugged this spinning reel looked. It has a different look than some of my other Cadence reels. Before I put line on the reel, I noticed how smooth and effortlessly it would spin. I had purchased the Cadence Elate 4000 spinning reel, so I put on about 300yds of 8lb monofilament line and attached it to one of my Cadence CR5 poles. Then took it out to a small lake to test it out. Right away from my first cast I noticed how nice it cast. I did notice the Elate has a smaller rubber like feel to the end of the crank where my other Cadence reels have a larger cork like feel to the end of the handle. Setting the drag is easy just like any of the Cadence spinning reels. Reeling in the line is extremely smooth and quiet. In some cases you can crank the reel and it feels like it just wants to keep spinning by itself. The reel does feels light and it has now become my favorite Cadence reel. I can’t wait to order a smaller version and pair it up with a smaller pole to make myself a nice trout fishing setup. Thanks Cadence for making a product that looks and feels like it is quality made. I really enjoy fishing with this spinning reel. ... show more
