Great book! I enjoined never built a bee hive before but I have moderate wood working experience from framing houses and building subwoofer enclosures. I found this book very easy to follow line by line and it turned out a great hive that's more intricate then something I would have just thought up. If you own a table saw and can measure with a measuring tape you can build a great hive just from reading this book. Pictures attatched are of what I built in a half day. His plans are very cost efficient and there is little scrap left over. It only took just a few boards to build what is pictured. Get the book you won't be disappointed unless you are looking for a very advanced wood working build (beyond the simple rabbit joint). Have fun and watch those fingers around the power tools! Update: I've continued to use this book to build more parts of the hives and now have 4 complete hives. One thing I wish the book included was building frames; I had to source the dimensions elsewhere. If the book was to be a complete hive book bottom to top, I feel it needs to include making top bars, side bars and bottom bars. Still a 5 star book! ... show more

    • Lots of Good Stuff
I found this book to be very informative. It shows all the different parts that need to be assembled to make a hive. The dimensions give are for both a 10 or 8 frame hive. Although, it does not state whether or not these dimensions are compatible with other brands of hive. I gave this a four, because some of the diagrams where a bit confusing, but with a little studying of the diagrams you can figure it out. I do like the tips on how to cut some of the more difficult pieces.It is a very good book for a beginner woodworker, with a whole chapter on what tools you need and alternative tools that can be used if you don't have the first one listed.     • Useful for those of us who build some or most of our beekeeping equiment
When starting out in beekeeping, I got the Dummies book for making hives. That one got me started, but I like this one better for some things. The author provides suggestions for simpler hive construction, using butt joints and the application of quality exterior wood glue and screws. Really, when you consider how good the glues and screws are for joining, and that you will be applying paint to the outside, and the fact that you won't probably can't expect them to last forever, you don't need to use finger joints. He also explains the use of lap joints, which most folks can handle better than finger joints. Anyway, it is that kind of attitude that I found useful. There are directions for a variety of needed and nice-to-have-not-necessary accessories as well. All clearly explained for anyone who has a modicum of experience with woodworking. ... show more

    • Missing Critical Information
While the concept of this book is "easy" beekeeping equipment and will give you quite a bit of what you need, I gave this book a three star review with great difficulty, I struggled with a 2-3 because the book is missing one critical piece of equipment you'll need. It does not include the blueprints for Frames. Frames are so critical to your hive that to omit this piece does the book disservice. I've had to source out other information, had I known it was missing the part about frames I would have sourced out everything instead of buying this book. It is a huge disappointment. However, it will still serve an initial purpose of providing the basic measurements for interior dimensions of equipment while my father and I spruce up the hives and offer them for sale through our Apiary. ... show more

    • Get this book if you have modest woodworking skills
This book will save you LOTS of money if you are into beekeeping. Lots of GREAT plans on how to build your own beekeeping equipment including hives, nucs, feeders, stands and the like. I cannot wait to start building. There are a few places where explanations on construction could be clearer, but it shouldn't be too difficult to figure out. I highly recommend this book if you have any woodworking skills. While a tablesaw is not neccessary, it is one of those work saving tools that makes life easier. The only negative thing I can report is that it does not contain plans for the frames that the bees will build the comb on. I think the author figures they are cheap enough to buy. I don't want to pay the shipping though. I am going to borrow a frame from a friend a make copies. ... show more
