  • Another Boss Classic
Boss' great series of guitar effects pedals creates a constant curiosity. Many are prized as treasures only long after they appear and are discontinued or upgraded. Many times Boss will discontinue a pedal, or improve upon it, and instantly the dead version skyrockets in price. For many years, guitarists have bemoaned the loss of one such pedal, the Heavy Metal. The Boss Metal Zone was meant to replace it, but has not proved as popular. Now Boss offers the Metal Core. This is another great Boss pedal. There are, of course, many overdrives and distortions in the Boss lineup yet if one has this, a DS-1, and a pick one of several overdrives, a guitarist can play anything from the heaviest metal to the tastiest blues. The Metal Core belongs on every pedal board of every metal player. It's reasonably priced and it absolutely rocks. What more do you need, Clyde? ... show more

  • Excellent high-gain distortion pedal
Initially i rated this pedal as 4 stars because lack of versatility (no mid knob) and even compared it with MXR M116 Fullbore metal, however after trying a lot different pedals i can assure this is the best high-gain distortion pedal in low-mid price range ($100 and lower). Gain knob at 2-3 o'clock position is enough, above it sounds too fuzzy for me. Noise gate is absent, however at mentioned gain level and humbuckers it is not an issue, or you can use dedicated noise suppressor in your signal chain. You can adjust low and high frequencies to get metal tone what you like. If you can afford take Diezel VH4, MXR EVH 5150, Friedman BE-OD, Revv G3/4 for more tube like sound ... show more

  • Terrible Pedal/Buy MXR/Avoid BOSS!
This pedal is OK. IF you have no other viable distortion pedals/amp effects, then this pedal may be what you need? Otherwise, don't buy this pedal!! The high gain setting (what you need for METAL) REQUIRES a noisegate!!! Terrible feedback! Truthfully, purchase a MXR FULLBORE METAL pedal instead. That pedal has its own noisegate and you can create at least 2 very distinctive bad ass metal/rock distortions. Way more versatile than any single BOSS pedal I've ever played!!! MXR fx are equally priced as BOSS pedals, but you get SO MUCH MORE with MXR! TRUST ME! This is my very first time returning anything to Amazon, stay away from BOSS fx. ... show more

  • If it ain’t metal it’s crap.
Though it has a lot of EQ control that works well, the sound is still limited. If you want a good modern metal sound, this baby does that very well. But if you also want mid distortion this doesn’t work as well for that. With the gain turned down it sounds a little thin compared to a pedal that was designed for that function. Not surprising of course. However I will emphasize that it is stellar at metal mayhem. ... show more

  • Good Pedal, Good Price, Versatile through many types of metal.
I recently bought this pedal to start building my pedalboard. I've been using a Fender Mustang I for awhile until it went out. It does the job, though with my set up I wasn't able to get the super bassy, beefy tone that I originally was going for (which may or may not have actually been my amp's fault). But, I actually found a better, more versatile tone with good mids. Took some messing around and when I first plugged it in I felt like I made a wrong choice, but after neutralizing the EQ on the amp and pedal, I was able to find a tone that sounds really cool. I have the distortion slightly backed down from full, probably about 80%, the low at 10 O'clock, and the highs at 2 o'clock. paired with a BOSS compressor and noise gate box, I've got a pretty good tone good for Iron Maiden and Kill Em All Metallica stuff, as well as metalcore / melo-death stuff. Overall a good pedal, and as the first pedal on my pedalboard, it does a good job at giving me the metal tone that I want. ... show more

  • Be Specific
Be specific in what you need with this pedal because heavy distortion (Metal) is about all this pedal can do. Thats a plus in my book as I tried this pedal out at a local store first and it sounded fantastic. I own several pedals and most are BOSS. I've been looking for something that was hard core enough for just rockin' out with and yet not so over the top it was ridiculous to try and control. I think I found it with this pedal. I can't possibly put into words what it sounds like, I highly recommend you try one out at a local store first. Be sure to test drive it alone, no other effects, just the pedal, guitar and amp. I am looking forward to breathing some new life into my old amp. Its well built, moderate controls for tailoring your sound a bit and then off you go to rock-land. My advice, if you haven't heard it (or played it), as with any guitar gear, stay away from it. Otherwise, I got it for over 10 bucks cheaper here on Amazon than at the local store. Pays to be willing to wait for delivery sometimes. ... show more

  • Favorite BOSS distortion stomp box
I absolutely love the sound of this pedal straight out of the box with all the knobs at the 12 o’clock position ... this has never happened to me before, I have a bunch of BOSS Overdrive and Distortion pedals, MXRs, and other boutique and standard pedals (Power Stack ST-2, Overdrive/Distortion OS-2, Distortion DS-1 40th Anniversary, MXR Super Badass, MXR Fullbore Metal, DOD Gunslinger Mosfet Distortion, Tone City Golden Plexi, etc etc etc) and this is easily my favorite out of the bunch for metal/rock. I used to own the Metal Zone eons ago and recall absolutely hating it at the time but this “Metal” named pedal truly made up for that name being on a BOSS pedal. ... show more

  • makes me think....
I should always buy used....the Boss ML-2 arrived on time and was in almost brand new condition....why pay new prices when you can save money buying used....besides that this is my 10th effect pedal from "BOSS"....great stuff....great sound, what more can you ask for. The Boss ML-2 is a great pedal to get that heavy metal guitar sound I love so much. This pedal rocks....I have the MT-2 as well and I needed both....the MT-2 is a little more old school metal, while the ML-2 has a more modern death metal sound to it. If your a heavy metal guitar player without a high gain amp then you need to get one of these. Nothing like some killer crunch to make your electric guitar come alive and roar like a lion! I like it! ... show more
