  • A Professional, High Quality Set (and one important hint)
In these days of COVID, I was in need of a mic so I could have better sound while lecturing and attending remote meetings. Although I hadn't intended to spend this much, the purchase of a Blue microphone was a no-brainier, as it consistently gets great reviews. The Compass boom arm Radius III shockmount were really afterthoughts, but when I considered the discount in buying all of the parts at once, it seemed like a good deal as well as a way to save desk space. So, I took the plunge. Unfortunately, the set didn't ship with an outer box (Shame on you, Amazon!), so when it arrived, two of the seals of the box were broken, the box top was ajar, and a corner was bashed in. However, I was pleasantly surprised by the copious padding in the Blue packaging that protected everything. It's a handsome unit, with all the key pieces made of powder-coated jet-black metal. The professional appearance and obvious heft of the components passes the eye test and screams quality. The design is both traditional old school and sleek new school at the same time. The set includes a sturdy base mount for the desktop edge. I also really liked the channel to hide the microphone cord. The Radius III shockmount works well and has a similar aesthetic as the Compass boom arm. All of the parts are easy to assemble, but comes with an instruction booklet if you need help. (Make sure you look at the illustrations carefully to avoid putting the microphone in the shockmount upside down. Also, the screw for the microphone comes with two washers on it already. One of those should go between the microphone and shockmount arm, and the other between the screw base and the shockmount arm. Lastly, the brass adapter they speak of in the instructions is already attached to the downstem of the Compass--you can screw the Radius III right into it.) Which brings me to the key thing about using this set effectively. BE SURE TO ADJUST THE TENSION SCREW in the Compass base before installing. (They even put a big ‘ol sticker to reminder you of this) . As shipped, it is way too tight and this accounts for the vast majority of problems reported about the boom arm not holding position, being too stiff, etc. I unscrewed the tension screw nearly all the way and found the tension is exactly perfect for the three friction joints when using the Blue Yeti, shock mount and a Blue Pop filter (available separately). I can move the microphone easily, yet it stays in place just where I want it. The Blue Yeti lived up to its reputation---really high quality and voice sounds much better than the built-in mic on my Hyper X headset. Finally, although it doesn't say it in the instructions, it turns out the clamp for the Blue Pop fits perfectly around the vertical downstem of the Compass mount. A couple of niggles: The desk clamp doesn't work quite as well on a desk with a large radius rounded edge, so if you have a desk like that, you may need a couple of flat spacers or you can purchase an adapter to allow desktop mounting through a drilled hole. Second, the cord channel is great for the microphone USB cable, but it would have been nice if a cable management solution had been included for a headset cable plugged into the base of the Blue Yeti (most headset cables aren't long enough to make the use of the preexisting channel practical). In summary, although this whole setup was on the pricey side, it turns out to be a very professional piece of kit and you do save over the price of the components purchased separately. That said, this is for people that take their audio seriously. However, if you are a frequent live streamer or podcaster extraordinaire, this is a fine investment I suspect you’ll be proud to own and use. PS: Hot tip: If you intend to use a headset with this set, check out this Aluminum Headset Stand Clamp https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07PFV1NQX/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 I was able to attach this to the distal segment of the Compass near the elbow. It looks stock and it’s the perfect place to hang your headset while not in use. ... show more

  • Highly recommend! but a few things to figure out.
I already have a Yeti USB Microphone but I wanted to have another one so I did not have to drag it up and down stairs from my office to my studio and back. To say the least I am very happy with the microphone. I worked over 30 years in broadcast TV & radio so sound quality is very important to me. I feel the mic is a great value for the quality and I love that it plugs easily into a computer. It is perfect for doing voice overs, webinars, etc. I needed a "boom arm" as well as a shockmount to decrease noise. I thought I would give the Blue Yeticaster a try. I have another boom arm that is not as nice as this one. The quality it really good and I know it will last for as long as I need it. I did have concerns when I first took it out of the box. I could not get the joints to bend. The instructions were not clear. I did look at several You Tube videos and figured out what I needed to do. Here is my process and it worked just fine. First I found the location I wanted to place the bracket and tightened it down. next I turned the arm over and found a phillips screw and loosened the screw. that is the trick and key...loosening or tightening the phillips head screw so the tension is not too tight. It still seemed too tight but I went ahead and placed the arm on the clamp. Ta da! it seemed to work. There were no instructions as to how to properly put the shockmount on but it is logical. Just figure out which end needs to be up and screw it in. also no instructions as to how to properly attach the mic but it is logical. There is a little bag with a part that you need to attach the mic to the shock mount in the box. It has 2 washers. Logical to figure out how to place it into the round metal piece that is sticking out into the center of the shock mount and screw it into the mic. Finally connecting the mic cable. There is a nice channel with clip-clamps that you can pop up to hide and dress the cable. Plug mic into computer. Once all is in place it is easy to adjust the 2 arm parts to your liking. there are plastic things on each joint that you can tighten and loosen to adjust to your liking. I love that the mic arm can turn 360 degrees. and it is very quiet when it moves. no squeaky springs. I did a test recording and the sound is good. I highly recommend this item to anyone that does any amount of voice work from voice overs to webinars or podcasts. It is very user friendly once you figure everything out. ;-) ... show more

  • Excellent basic microphone
Like many, I am a remote worker. This boom mic is a daily-use item. It has excellent sound features (four mic patterns, gain control, mic mute) and when used with the downloaded software from Logitech you can have near studio quality sound for podcasts, conference calls, and even basic recording. With a few basic adjustments for the environment you can even make decent sounding recordings. The USB format gives you good connectivity to/from a PC/laptop for convenience. The shock support helps dampen/reduce sound from moving the mic or inadvertent contact (bumps). Adding things like a screen in front and some sound-reduction around the mic (sides/back) only further enhances the audio quality. The boom arm is my only issue with this set. Two issues are the arm position doesn't really lock in place very well and there are no locations to hang other items such as headphones or additional cords. It's easy enough to add some means of hanging items from the boom arm without impeding holding or function of the microphone - but with only the microphone weight, the boom arm does not hold position firmly enough to prevent the mic position from changing over time. ... show more
