  • Nice upgrade for Ender 3 but may need some tweaks
The original controller on my Ender 3 malfunctioned and the hot end got stuck in the "ON" mode. As soon as the printer was powered on, the hot end would start heating up even though the screen said it was off. Fortunately, it happened while I was right there working with the printer. Had the failure happened while it was printing and I wasn't in the room, it could have been a disaster. Thermal overload protection doesn't do any good when the printer already thinks the hot end is turned off! Rather than just buy another Creality board to replace it, I decided to upgrade. The price was decent for both the board and the display, so I figured why not? After running for about 5 months now, I can say I am quite pleased with the controller. It's much quieter than the OEM (which isn't really that big a deal for me since I have a dedicated space for the printer) and seems to perform quite well. Installation of the controller was easy. Pretty much just plug and play. The display presents some challenges though. The Bigtree display board is bigger so the printed cover I had for the old display didn't fit. Worse, even without the cover there isn't enough room between the display mounting plate and the base extrusion for the bigger board to fit. In order to get enough clearance, I had to use just one of the holes on the mounting plate, making it a bit unstable. (see photo) I'm sure I could design and print a mount adapter and a new cover to solve those problems, but I have been too lazy since I really don't use it much anyway. The only complaint about the control board is that the preloaded firmware was apparently a development version. When running with Octoprint, it gives a warning stating that the firmware is a development version which may be less stable than a release version. Not that big a deal, and I have yet to do anything about it since I haven't run in to any stability issues. Just seems like it should have been a release version from the factory. In hindsight, if I had it to do again, I would probably order just the control board and skip the display. Not that there is anything wrong with the display. The touch UI is easier to use than the stock LCD and looks nicer. However, because I run almost exclusively using Octoprint, it provides very little benefit. The only thing I ever do interactively from the display is once in a while if I am impatient to get a print started, I'll manually turn on the hot end while the bed is still heating. That allows both to be warming up at the same time and can save a minute or two. But I couldn't seem to make that work from the touch UI, so I end up just leaving it in Marlin mode all the time anyway. Not worth the money to see orange text instead of blue. Overall, I am happy with the purchase. My best advice to other potential buyers would be to consider how much you will actually be using the printer's UI before deciding whether or not to invest the extra for the touch screen. ... show more

  • Amazing upgrade
For a while I didn't think I needed to upgrade my mainboard because I thought it would only make it quieter at rest, but no! It's so much quieter to print too! The printer flows from one spot to the next rather than jerks. I don't know that it proves any faster, but I can be in the same room for long periods of time now ... show more

  • Great Upgrade
So I've pretty much done just about every upgrade a guy could do to my ender 3 pro. Some of them worth the time (BLTouch, DirectDrive), some of them not really (3pt leveling system is meh). I decided to do this to try to make the printer quieter, and I liked the idea of the touchscreen interface. I already use octoprint (very worthwhile) so i didn't really think i'd use the touchscreen that much.. But boy was I wrong. It's so much more user friendly than sliding all the way back to my pc. and my machine is silenet now aside from the fans. Installation is easy. If you're a BL Touch user - download teaching tech's firmware.bin file and drop that on a microSD card in the board. it will automatically upload his settings, which is way easier to start from there and mod than getting in to configs in visual basic. Wire the probe to the servo spot and the Z stop spot, like in his diagram. I had a different version of probe so it was some trial and error but it came out right. For the touchscreen - all you need is the 5 pins from the RS232 port. the one by itself is reset and should go on towards the front of the printer. This is $70 well spent and I think will end up being one of my favorite upgrades, aside from octoprint. Which if you haven't done, you should go do now. ... show more

  • Good bang for the buck so far.
I upgraded a stock ender 3 and so far this combo works very well. I had to do some homework to get familiar with this board and lots of videos out there to help make the installation less painful. PCB seems decent as far as quality goes: decent soldering of components and board is not too thin/flimsy. I sued both the tft cable and ribbon cable from stock display so I could use it in either marlin or touchscreen mode. I can use the touch screen far more easier and quicker than picking everything with the dial. I also use an old touch pen to keep my fingers form getting the screen dirty. The screen is responsive with either a finger or the touch pen. Although a little outdated I think that this board has had all the bugs worked out and is fairly mature. A decent board and screen at a decent price. ... show more

  • Great value and silent printing.
Separating the review into two parts between the SKR e3 Mini and the TFT35 display they both have good value. SKR e3 Mini v1.2 - This thing is amazing. Easy install and firmware update in my Ender 3. The difference in noise level still amazes me. It's hard to believe its the same printer. Having learned even more about it since installing and configuring I very firmly believe this is the clear choice over a Creality 1.1.5 silent board. The 32 bit processing and memory make it a near "must have" upgrade. Between this and a BLTouch (which is plug and play with this board) they should be standard on any new 3D Printer. TFT35 V3.0 - Easy to install and easy to update. Form and function are good. The display is crisp and responsive. The new material UI is nice to look at, but needs some time to mature and grow. If you aren't going to go the Octoprint route I think this is a very worthwhile addon. ... show more
