  • Well made solid knife.
I am an old person. Been carrying a pocket knife of some sort for over 60 years. Last 10+ years I have been using a 2 blade Case that belonged to my stepfather. A simple little knife that worked for most things. Decided I wanted something a bit larger and heavier. Read many reviews about the the best EDC and, to no surprise, there was no single "best". This knife and the Griptilian were somewhere on most all the lists. The price was a bit much, but the reviews were solid. I chose to purchase and hope the reviews were factual. Most of what I own I have had for years, because I love things well made and do the job I expect of it. Knife is well made. Blade is wonderfully sharp and holds an edge. It is a bit small for me, but I have large hands. Still the grip is solid and comfortable. Great knife for one handed open and close action. If I weren't so old I would certainly buy another as a "just in case I lose it" backup. Well worth the price to me. Great product. I paid full listing for this item. ... show more

  • Can't beat it.
These are my go-to gifts for people I really like. I carried one like this for years, until it died from literally being ran over by a bus. Benchmade offered to replace it, but I declined since it was my fault it ended up on the road anyway. I gave these to my groomsmen at my wedding as part of their gifts. Overall, a great starter knife in the "pretty nice, not your ordinary knife" world...A great first knife that will get folks hooked on to carrying non-garbage knives daily. Great blade, great (not-cop-angering) blade size for Illinois, ergonomic handle, easy one-handed open/close, great pocket clip (set up for righties out of the box). I find the partially-serrated blade to be quite useful. This was my first partially-serrated blade...I was originally not sold on the idea of a serrated area, but after owning one I now prefer them. They work well for cordage and all sorts of other heavier-duty sawing that doesn't go easily with a straight blade. The AXIS lock is, IMHO, the best black lock on the market...Sturdy, yet extremely easy to operate one-handed with just a bit of practice. The only thing I can ding this knife for is the G10 scales...They don't stand up to being ran over by a bus! :) I'd still be using mine for EDC if it wasn't for its fateful meeting with a city bus. I've moved on to a Benchmade 707S, but the 556S is the way to go for a great, relatively inexpensive folding knife with a great lock. ... show more

  • amazing everyday carry
wonderful, unique blade lock design. smooth action (took a short time to break in). comfortable, non-slip grip. comfortingly legal 2.9" blade length. nice serrations for cutting cord, straps, etc. the locking action was slightly rough when I first got the knife. The blade pivot itself was very smooth with no perceptible looseness. When opening the blade very fast, however, the lock would stick a bit when trying to close the blade, requiring quite a bit of pressure to release. However, this stickiness disappeared after several weeks of light use, as I think some of the rough edges may have worn off a bit. Now it is perfect. As a larger adult male, the knife is slightly small in my hands. However, this makes me more comfortable pulling it out at work to open boxes and slice apples. The paint is starting to scratch off the clip, which I wear on the outside of my jeans pocket (knife inside the pocket.) I think it would be preferable for Benchmade to make the clip with a brushed/bead-blasted metal finish, but mine is headed that direction anyway with a few more years of use :) My previous knife was a Gerber 45860 Air Ranger Serrated Edge Knife, which was slightly larger, and a bit thinner, making it a nice EDC. However, it didn't hold its sharpness all that well, and the all-metal handle wasn't all that comfortable. I have yet to evaluate the edge-retention of the Benchmade, but the better (harder) steel makes me confident it will perform well in that regard. (I'd recommend the Gerber as a cheaper knife for a child or the camp kit; it's easy to clean and lightweight, too) Also, the plastic handle is a little bit rough in its attempt to be extra grippy, but I expect it will age gracefully like ocean-tumbled glass. ... show more
