  • An old familiar friend…
Style: Speak & Spell
This was one of the best things I remember about a time in my childhood. I immediately smiled & jumped to order when I saw it. I think it sounds the same but even if slightly different, it doesn’t matter. We don’t reach to nostalgic toys because they were perfect . What I remember is that this was a comforting and familiar friend from long ago. Helped me escape my reality back then and now as a safe Autonomous adult, I’m glad to have it around. Still fun when I need a little bit of a nostalgic good time. Oh yes, and it’s reminder that I made it out of that wretched childhood far better than I would have imagined. Heaven be praised! ... show more

  • Speak and Spell - can't beat a classic
Style: Speak & Spell
I recently purchased the Speak and Spell, and it has been such a fun and educational experience! The toy is well-made, with clear, easy-to-understand speech and bright, engaging lights. It’s a great way to help kids learn spelling and vocabulary while having fun. My child loves the interactive games, and I’ve already noticed improvement in their spelling skills. It’s a classic toy that combines learning with play in the best way possible. I highly recommend it to any parent looking for an entertaining, educational gift! ... show more

  • Just okay
Style: Speak & Spell
I suppose this is exactly what it says it is. A retro speak and spell. There are no improvements, so you can’t have it practice specifics words, or bring it down to an easier level like CVC words, or anything like that. The dated controls can be pretty frustrating.

  • Fast delivery, good price and excellent learning tool for a one year old
Style: Speak & Spell
I love the vintage look about this unit. I would certainly buy again. I got this as a Christmas gift for my coworker's one year old son and he loves it, he carries it all over the house. I would highly recommend this for anyone with a young toddler to start their learning skills early.

  • Excellent customer service
Style: Speak & Spell
I bought this for my then 6-year-old son for Christmas last year. We both enjoyed using it together (I had a TI Speak & Spell when I was a kid). As others have pointed out, the voice and display are modern-retro: not like the original, but not always easy to understand and read, either. However, overall it's an enjoyable product, true to the original. After sitting on a shelf for a few months during the summer etc. we picked it up again recently, only to discover that the display was hard to read. We tried changing batteries, pressing the reset button, etc. I finally submitted a message with photos to Basic Fun's customer service. They responded overnight, saying: "We were concerned to receive the below information as we take every possible care to ensure that our products meet with our customer’s expectations in all respects. We are shipping you a Speak and Spell replacement today - Fedex tracking # below. I have reviewed the item myself and it is working properly." I was (and still am) floored. Honestly, I didn't expect much of a response at all. We're talking about a $35 children's toy, but they responded like it was a premium product, no questions asked. You've got to give them an A+ for that alone. ... show more

  • A mistake
Style: Speak & Spell
Display is awful, you can’t see it, it’s not at all “like the original”… it’s only “like the original” that is 40 years old, and the display is dead. The voice is different, its wrong, its bad, it screws with your mind. No it’s wrong. Correct answers should say “That is correct.” It instead says “that is right”… just no. It’s a bad cash grab… I want to fix the problems but it’s not worth it… they shouldve done way better than this. It’s terrible. ... show more

  • Possible factory defect
Style: Speak & Spell
Bought two separate units and both had issues within a few uses. The commands did not line up with the buttons being engaged and some buttons just would not work at all. It’s unfortunate because I had hoped it was as going to be as reliable as the original -and my daughter was so excited to use it too. Disappointed. ... show more
