People have pretty individualized sound tastes, so I'll just say it's punchy, and the Beoplay app allows you to tighten/expand/modify the sound stage, and I like it. The bluetooth connection is good. No crackling, etc, cheap earbuds/headphones make when you move, etc. The battery claims are legit, though I'm sure it'll vary by an hour or so based on what volume you have it set at. Can't speak for call quality, as I will never use these to make/receive phone calls (who even makes phone calls anyway). No Active Noise Cancelling, but that also isn't a feature I was looking for. But, it's almost impossible to tease apart the cost of ANC, so fair or not, these will be compared to the increasingly high percent of bluetooth headphones in the multihundred dollar range that come with it. Comfort. Oh boy. Those lambskin earpads are so comfortable. They are technically over the ear, and they're fairly average in that, which is to say they're round, rather than oval, so they barely truly go over the ears on the top/bottom sides (since our ears aren't round; an issue I've had with literally every round shaped earpadded headphone I've ever used; I do not understand at all why oval isn't the shape every headphone uses). But, I really can't overstate how comfortable the earpads are, so unlike most round earpads, I didn't find them annoying at all. That said, they do get warm. That, however, is also true of any earpad I've ever used that wasn't naked mesh/foam and fingers crossed that actual leather won't just disintegrate into a thousand tiny pieces like cheaper pleather does within a year or two of use. The physical controls are fine, but they'd be immensely better in my opinion if they were accompanied by a voice or better audio prompts. Instead, it just uses very subdued single beeps...which is probably intentional. Just not my preference. After all, while it has a led status light to let you know it's pairing, etc, you can't see that light when you're wearing them. I'm still not really sure about the led status light as it pertains to charging. My headphones charge, but they blink orange when they get to ~70% charge until they get full. Nowhere in the B&O help article about the status light does it indicate blinking orange, and blinking red supposedly has to do with bluetooth pairing issue or low battery issue, neither of which makes any sense in this case. Charging is supposed to be a steady orange, which it is while it's below 70%. Possibly not coincidentally, that last 30% charge takes the lion's share of the 2.5 hour full charge time (probably closer to 3 hours). There is a B&O help article that says blinking orange means charging, but that help article is for an entirely different model, so it's a mystery, but it doesn't impede my use of them, so... Oh, if you don't have a thousand micro usb cables laying around, the one that comes with the headphone is super short. The aux cable that comes with it if you want to use it wired is a bit cheap feeling (ie: iphone charging cable that's gonna split after two weeks cheap feeling). I've never used it. There are none of the "neat" convenience features you increasingly see on bluetooth headphones, ie: auto mute. They definitely have a style tax at their retail price on the B&O website, but they're pretty much always less than that here on Amazon, and I think at the current price range ($200-220), the price is perfectly respectable if you're looking for this particular aesthetic in a good pair of bluetooth headphones with zero frills in terms of extra features. Style, like sound, is also pretty subjective, but I despise the looks of most headphones (I thought both the Sony and Bose ANC headphones that are found on virtually every buying guide to be quite good, but ugly beyond belief, as a reference point...and unfortunately, most headphones follow similar aesthetics), and this is pretty much the only one's under $300 I like the look of (was torn between the grey with gold caps vs full price on the B&O site for the storm blue with silver caps...I think if the storm blue had used gold caps instead, I'd have pulled that trigger) . I have go up another $160 for the next set of bluetooth headphones I like the looks of, and while I was tempted...I just don't use wireless headphones enough to quite justify that, and they don't have leather earpads, and did I mention how damn comfortable the H4's earpads are? Definitely need to purchase a case/soft pouch if you intend to carry them in your bag. I'm not about to put it to a test, but I imagine the caps would get scratched easily if you just let them jostle around unprotected. ... show more

    • Some of the best sounding and most comfortable phones available for under $300

I started looking for headphones primarily because I wanted some I could wear for hours, and secondarily that sounded really good. (I'm a musician, so sound is important.) These H4s are the best ones I found under $300. I considered the following: B&O H8 JBL E65BTNC Bose QuietComfort 35 (Series II) Sony MDR1000X/B Sony XB950N1 I also tried multiple cheaper headphones like Avantree 40 and Symphonized Headphones. They were exactly that - cheap - mediocre materials and average sound. In this same class are the AUSDOM headphones I already owned, which were also not comfortable when wearing for hours (the reason to start the search). Unfortunately, these cheap headphones get high ratings on Amazon, because most people are just looking for cheap headphones that sound OK. That makes it difficult for those of us really interested in sound. The B&O H8s, which are almost identically constructed, simply didn't sound as good to me as the H4s, which is fine, as the H8's are $100 more. The Bose phones were the most comfortable of all the phones I tried. They're light and fit nicely over the ears. However, the H4s sound slightly better, believe it or not. I was surprised. Fortunately, I was able to get my own tunes hooked up to both for an apples to apples comparison. The H4s performing better worked out well for me, as I was able to get the H4s $100 cheaper than the Bose phones. :) The JBLs sounded great and were fairly comfortable. While they appeared to be sturdy, they apparently have a circuitry defect per multiple Amazon reviews. The Sony MDR1000X/B phones sounded good. In fact, I saw a recent article that suggests they have surpassed the Bose phones as the best ANC phones available. However, I did not get them because a) they were not quite as comfortable as the H4s and b) they didn't sound quite as good as the H4s (or Bose) to me. The Sony XB950N1 phones were some of the most comfortable (light and not tight on the head). As well, they have good bass, as advertised. However, the sound was a tad bit muddier than the H4s. For the price/performance, if I hadn't gotten the H4s, I would have gotten these. As other reviews suggest, the H4s don't have Active Noise Cancelling. However, they block out more sound than most headphones I've ever had. The H4s were the third most comfortable phones I looked at (Bose were #1 and XB950N1 #2). The sound quality on the H4s was the best of the phones I looked at. (Bose was #2.) The construction of the H4s is the best of the phones I looked at - very solid. In fact, a bit too heavy for some people's tastes, but fine by me. The bass on the H4s is definitely there. You just have to make sure you can tweak the sound on whatever player you use, because out of the box the H4s are not as bass-heavy as some prefer. Note that price was a tertiary consideration for me. Amazon has some killer deals on phones that are refurbished or slightly used. I really had a lot of hope for them! Noise cancelation is excellent- my neighbors dog has been howling for hours and I couldn’t hear; however, the sound isn’t that great even with the app that adjusts the sound quality. It might be great for people who don’t like their music loud and bass-y.
