  • 4.0 out of 5 stars High Quality, install=high level of difficulty, not compatible with coaster brakes, and how to return
Color: P850C Display Size: 46T+48V 17.5Ah Rear Battery
I'm a mechanically inclined person, but called in a bike tech to assist with install. We both agreed after putting in the drive and then realizing the brakes wouldn't work that buying is better than building an e-bike for the average biker who isn't also a Bike Tech. If you do buy a retrofit kit, for safety reasons, make sure your bike has great brakes; my coaster (backwards pedal) brake is incompatible with the Bafang & due to my fork and frame I cannot add caliper brakes, so I returned the unit. For returns: *the battery is HEAVY and lithium - expensive to return. *you will be paying for return shipping (battery + Bafang was $100 to return via USPS); I recommend buying a battery only after successful install *keep track of how things were packaged, as you'll need to put them back in the box in the same way- and the seller requires photos of all UPC codes on inside packaging as part of your return. All in all, I'm out about $250 for this failed experiment, but that is cheaper than a visit to the emergency room because I couldn't stop my bike. ... show more

  • 5.0 out of 5 stars Powerful, quiet, long battery life, game-changer!!
Color: 850C Display Size: 44T+48V 17.5Ah Shark Battery
I got the 750W mid-drive motor, with a 48v 17.5 ah battery on the down tube, 44T chainring, which is on my Surly Long Haul Trucker. After researching different motor placements, different kits, and different batteries, I settled on this bafang kit. I have been very pleased so far and am so glad I got this! I felt a little better about choosing this kit after calling my bike shop to see if they could install it for me - "Oh Bafang? Yeah, we've installed a lot of Bafang motors, no problem," which made me feel like it wasn't just some random knock-off brand of motor. I was definitely intimidated about installing it myself, and the bike shop did an excellent job. The mechanic who did it said it took about an hour to an hour and a half and he didn't have any issues. There are three settings - Pedal Assist 1, 2, or 3, and a throttle. Pedal assist 1 offers some help while you are pedaling, level 2 a little more, and 3 is like turbo. Using throttle you don't have to pedal at all, it's like an electric scooter at that point. I just took the bike out with a full battery for 60 miles, fully loaded down for touring, on a ride with a couple of long, major hills, some smaller hills, and some flat. On the major hills, I used a level 2 or 3 to get up the hill, going about 8 to 9 mph, with very little effort on my part, just continuous pedaling. On smaller hills, a level 1 would suffice. If I wanted to get more exercise, I just left it on 0 (off, or no assist), and pedaled myself up those smaller hills. On flat roads, I would usually leave it at 0 or 1, if there was a head wind, or I wanted to a little boost. I occasionally used the throttle to cross over highways, go up a very steep turn, or to start up at stoplights when I really wanted to get moving. (I tested using full throttle on a flat road, and it got up to 18mph.) After 60 miles of riding like this, using it at level 2/3 for hills, and level 1 or 0 for the rest, again fully loaded for touring, utilizing the motor for perhaps 2/3 of the ride, I still had 2/5 of my battery left. To fully charge it back up, it took a few hours with the charger that was included with the kit. It is very easy to use. It is also completely silent. I rode with a small group, and no one could tell when I had the motor on or off. Other than a big ol' battery on the downtube, it looks, sounds, and rides like any other bike. One thing I didn't realize is that the bike will have essentially one gear after the kit is installed, so if you want to utilize your bike without turning the motor on, you will be left with what is essentially one fixed gear. Not a huge deal, but just something I didn't realize before I got the kit. I had to email a bit with the company after I ordered, because I wanted the tool rather than the headlight, and then there was a small delay in shipping which they alerted me to, and they were always prompt and courteous in their communication. (You have to email them through the amazon site, this took me a bit to figure out!) :) The delay was only a couple of days, and it was sent promptly - the motor in one shipment, and the battery in another, which both arrived on the same day. All in all, I am very glad I ordered this kit and very happy with the results! I look forward to lots of touring with my now converted ebike. I no longer dread those long hills! A game-changer! ... show more

  • 4.0 out of 5 stars Very powerful motor that really wants to go!
Color: C961 Display Size: 44T+48V 20Ah G80 Shark Battery
Pros: - Very strong motor Neutral: - You lose the ability to have multiple front sprockets and therefore available gears but now you have a motor so..... - Depending on your bike frame this likely will need some creative modification for wiring or battery placement Cons: - Definitely not a natural feeling while pedaling. The motor engages too strong when assist is on. I purchased the 44T motor with the 20ah shark battery and put it on a low end 21 speed Shimano mountain bike. There's definitely a degree of mechanical know-how that you need to do this conversion but there are enough videos showing how to remove the various components where it should be manageable for most people. For cord management I ended up using electrical tape instead of the provided zip-ties. This kept the wires cleaner and if you don't mind seeing tape can better secure it to the bike frame. There was plenty of cord provided and at times I had to wrap it around the frame a few times (I spiraled it) to take up the excess. I had to buy a few extra things to make this work. First I needed to get a tool to remove the bottom bracket (what the front sprockets attach to) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09KV4PRCF?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details&th=1. Second, the battery wouldn't fit between or underneath the frame so I had to buy a rear tire rack to mount the battery on. I did get the largest battery so I assume the others were smaller and it might not have been an issue. Once it was put together, I turned it on and the C961 display was giving me an error. The pedal assist and throttle still worked but I had no idea what assist setting it was on. I unplugged the display and everything worked normally after plugging it back in. As for the performance.....wow. The motor has a lot of torque and crushes hills. In the lowest gear (now only 7 because you replace the front sprockets) I have to be careful or the front tire wants to come off the ground. Before the conversion I could barely pedal up my driveway in the lowest gear while standing up and throwing all my weight at the pedals. After the conversion (lowest gear is now a much higher ratio than before due to losing sprockets) the bike slows but easily crawls up my driveway. That being said, as soon as you start to pedal the motor takes off even when you're on the lowest assist setting. You basically have to turn it off if you want to go slow (like in a crowded area). Overall I gave this a 4 out of 5 solely because I haven't had it for very long and also haven't been able to test the battery life or overall durability. ... show more
