  • Well worth it
Color: 500C color display Size: 44T & 17.5Ah Touring rack Battery
(EDIT 8/2/2020: The photos display in a different order than loaded. Photos 8, 9, and 10 that I refer to appear for me as the 1st, 6th, and 4th.) In summary, the kit (and battery) arrived quickly, was complete and relatively easy to install, the customer service was excellent, and the bike (Trek 3500 MTB) is great -- I'm exploring everywhere now that hills and distance are no concern. I bought the BAFANG BBS02B 48V 750W 44T Mid Drive kit with the 17.5Ah battery and 500C color display and thumb throttle from Junstar. I chose Junstar because of the positive reviews for customer service. There are many factors to consider when choosing a kit configuration (type of motor and battery and display, programmibility, your bike's frame size, tires, brakes...it is well worth researching thoroughly. I will note just one factor: I chose the big battery because I wanted the range. However, for any size battery, if you ride on any rough road (let alone trails), I would recommend the rack mount. Batteries are very heavy. The hardest part of the installation was deciding how to tie up the extra wiring. The pictures show my approach. My rear brake is a Shimano V-Brake which incorporates the rear shifters so I could not use the kit's brake lever. I removed the switch from the kit's brake and glued it along with a spacer (photo 8) that activates the switch. (The vendor sells a magnetic switch alternative.) I did not like the default programming. You'll need the separate programming cable to make changes. There is a lot of discussion about configurations on the Web. The process was easy and went well. However, the throttle was very jerky. Per suggestions from the Web for a different setting, I tried but couldn't get the cable to work a second time. I tried a different PC as well as a different OS but no luck. Millie at Junstar sent me a new cable and that one did work fine. I've made a couple of throttle tweaks, which helped a little, but I rarely use the throttle. The throttle is basically either on or off. There's a slight ramp up but it's nothing like a motorcycle control. The PAS (pedal assist) works for me: I'm always in a low enough gear that my cadence is normal or higher (protects the motor) and I set the assist level to the amount of effort I want to expend. PAS doesn't work the way you first expect it to -- you'll see plenty of comments on the Web about that -- but then you learn that it does work the way you want it to. Lessons I learned: - The left and right crank arms come in differently colored packaging. However, I didn't pay attention when installing and -- natch -- got them reversed. - Going over some rough railroad tracks, the rear rack wrenched free from the horizontal mounting rods and the battery and rack fell dragging behind me. Luckily, the only damage was the scraped rack. I added hose clamps (photo 9) so that the mounts can't slide. - I was halfway up a steep trail when my motor stopped working. I feared that I had burned it out, and I headed back, hoping that it would work again after some cooling. At the bottom and still no motor, I noticed that the connector to the display was slightly ajar. Reinserting the connector was all that was needed. (The dead display was the obvious but overlooked clue.) I added an extra zip tie (photo 10) for that connection. My only wishes would be a more nuanced throttle control; and a blinking option for the headlight and taillight for daytime riding. Otherwise, I'm super pleased. ... show more

  • Not enough information on first battery charge detached from bike
Color: 500C color display Size: 44T & 52V 17.5Ah Rear Battery
The speed sensor retaining screw requires a 6 point star wrench that does not come with kit and the nut that holds on peddle cranks is a hex key wrench again that does not come with the kit, it looks to be metric but of unknown size. I don't understand why the directions are limited and hard to understand but my install is complete after 20 hours. ... show more

  • Excellent mid-motor ebike kit
Color: P850C color display Size: 46T & 17.5Ah Touring rack Battery
I rarely write reviews, but I was very pleased with this Bafang 750w kit. It arrived within 10 days with nothing missing or damaged. The installation was relatively easy, except for the rear rack/battery mount. I had to modify the attachment to the frame to clear the disc brake caliper. No fault of the rack, the problem was caused by the way I had to adapt new disc brakes to the old Trek hybrid step through frame. I couldn't use the V-brakes because I chose 650b wheels instead of the 700c which the bike was originally designed for, I wanted to ride on wider 1.9 tires. Very glad I did, the ride is superb. I'm impressed with the Bafang 750w motors torque, I probably helped this by installing a Lekkie 42t Bling Ring Chain Ring instead of the 46t steel ring that came with the kit. The Lekkie chain ring also improved the chain line. Coupled with an 8 Spd 11-30 cassette the bike easily climbed a moderate grade at 25mph without my help. At 75 years old Top speed is way above what I want to experience. Only had it running for a few days, but so far I'm very happy with this purchase. ... show more

  • Like having a tailwind on tap
Color: 500C color display Size: 48T & 13Ah Down tube Battery
First, the delivery was weeks faster than the estimate. I'm not a Prime member, so I was prepared for a long wait, but the kit arrived in a week. Second, the installation went smoothly. I ordered the special wrench, which definitely contributed to the ease of installation. Oddly, the thing that caused the biggest problem was attaching the speed sensor magnet to a spoke. The machine screw that was supplied was a torx with a pin in the middle of it. I have a pretty complete set of tools, including a lot of specialized ones, but I didn't have a tool for that. Fortunately, I did have a machine screw that was the right size and thread pitch, but I had to shorten it. Finally, to the performance. I love this bike! I'm a life-long cyclist, but I've broken both of my hips (in cycling accidents). My hips have deteriorated to the point that cycling under my own power results in a lot of pain. Using this in pedal assist mode allows me to get the benefit of the smooth, low-impact rotation without putting nearly as much strain on my joints. I live in a rural area with plenty of quiet, scenic roads, but also a lot of hills. With this setup, I can use a combination of downshifting and increasing the level of pedal assist to cruise up 10% grades almost as if it was level ground. I was a little uneasy about the purchase because the mid-drive motor required replacing my triple chainring with a single, eliminating all my granny gears. I settled on a 48 tooth in order to have a reasonably fast top speed, which also meant quite a high lowest gear. I wouldn't want to have to pedal this on my local terrain without pedal assist. With pedal assist, after changing the useless default controller profile settings, I'm finding the 48t was a good choice. I'm still learning what the range of the 13ah 48v battery is, but I think it will end up being 80-90 miles, riding as I am. If you're considering buying one of these, my advice is to do as much research as you can in advance, including watching one or more of the numerous installation videos that are available, and make as educated a choice as you can. There are a lot of options. The installation, though fairly easy for me, still requires skill and knowledge. I've been building and overhauling bikes for years, and I have tools that most backyard mechanics aren't likely to. That said, the end product is definitely cool - like having an on-demand tailwind! ... show more
