Description

Thanks to its adjustable density control, the B+W ND Vario filter can be adapted to your individual requirements. The XS-Pro mount offers an index setting, allowing the photographer to set the density between +1 and +5 stops. You may combine additional B+W ND filters of fixed value to achieve higher density choices. The ND Vario should be the outermost filter when combined with additional filters. The B+W XS-Pro ND Vario filters are all MRC nano coated, and are offered in sizes 40.5mm, 46mm, 49mm, 52mm, 55mm, 58mm, 62mm, 67mm, 72mm, 77mm, 82mm, and 95mm. The XS-Pro Vario ND mount is an EW (extra- wide) design, and should avoid vignetting concerns with most 17mm lenses on a full frame body. As equipment specifications vary greatly, we advise shooting your own tests to confirm results using your specific equipment.

  • Even coloring/lighting
Size: full-size Style: 82mm
I've been a photographer for over 10 years and just recently added this filter. I love it! It really helps balance lighting and allows a more even/smooth look between colors and lighting. I'm a big fan and well worth the money.

  • If only it came with a lens cover
Size: full-size Style: 62mm
Great variable lens but unable to keep it on the lens because it doesn't come with a lens cover.

  • Solid build, excellent ND-stop variability, no vignetting, but too large to use with lens hood
ND filters (Neutral Density), in essence, lower the amount of light that reaches the lens, making the environment appear darker than it is. This allows you to use slower shutter speeds in brighter areas/day time. What does this mean? ND filters help you take silky-smooth ocean wave photos at the beach during a bright, sunny day (which would normally only be possible during dusk/dawn/night time.) Note: unlike GRADUATED ND filters, ND filters (such as this B+W one) darkens the entire scene. Graduated ND filters only darken a portion of the scene (which enables you to balance a bright sky with the ground, for example.) I purchased this item for use with the Canon 24-70mm f/2.8L II lens. Since I own the B+W 82mm XS-Pro Nano UV filter (which is very thin, and as a result, has a very small amount of front threading to attach other accessories/filters), I practically have to stick to the XS-Pro Nano line for all other filters. Case in point: I purchased the B+W F-PRO series Circular Polarizer, and it did not mount onto the UV filter. Getting the B+W XS-Pro Nano version of the CirPol did. The B+W XS-Pro Nano ND Vario filter threaded fine on both the B+W Nano UV and Polarizer filters. I was also concerned about vignetting caused by stacking the Nano UV + Nano Polarizer + Nano ND filters, but thankfully, vignetting was very, very limited at 24mm. There was no vignetting with just the Nano UV + Nano ND filters on. The filter itself is solidly built (like most other B+W filters). The ND Vario filter switched from the various Stops (strength of ND filtering) smoothly and with ease. The ability to change the ND filtering intensity was the biggest selling point. The only issue I found with the filter is that I'm unable to mount the lens hood with it already on (the filter is larger in diameter than the hood opening). I also tried mounting the lens hood first, then threading on the filter, but that was challenging, and even more difficult trying to unmount the filter (since the hood was blocking any ability to grip the filter with your bare fingers.) In other words, don't expect to be able to securely use the hood while the filter is mounted. Pictures came out crystal clear, and though I am fretting over the $300+ purchase price, it was money well spent. I look forward to taking it with me on my upcoming Patagonia trip where I plan on taking slow-shutter photos of ocean waves crashing against the Perito Moreno Glacier walls. • Warning: 86C front thread size--otherwise excellent.
Size: full-size Style: 82mm
Typical excellent B+W quality. I bought my first video camera in a long while with no internal ND, so to shoot outdoors with a 1/48th shutter speed and wide aperture, I needed one of these, B+W was an obvious choice, and it matches the image quality of my several B+W polarizers. One hitch: The front thread diameter of this filter is NOT 82mm. Maybe it would have vignetted if it were that small. Instead,, it's 86C (!), a size I have not seen in years. I wanted to use a polarizer in front of this filter and I had to dig deep to find an 86C to 4 1/2" adapter and an old 4 1/2" polarizer. I'm set, but you may want to find a different filter with a more common front thread size. ... show more

  • Vignettes when adapted to 67 and 72 filter sizes
I had to send this filter bad due to vignetting. It ended up ruining both still shots and footage. Yet I don't know if this is the fault of the product, or the advice I was given online.... But many folks online say to buy the biggest ND filter you can and then use rings to adapt it to your lenses. Well, even with bigger lenses at 67 and 72mm, this doesn't appear to be true. I get vignetting in one of the corners with these lenses when I utilize step up rings to use this filter. What confuses me is that it's just one corner. Usually you get vignetting all around. Bit odd. Nonetheless, if this is due to bad advice, kindly tell me, and I'll update this review with more stars. Maybe it'd a better practice to buy the exact size ND you need for a particular lens? If so, kindly let me know, as I don't want to pan the filter for what is operator error -- and in a sense, community failure, as the "step up" advice is so very common. Yet if that's the problem, I'd love to give this filter another go. I rarely see the 67mm on prime (the one I need most for one of my favorite lenses I wish to use outdoors), but I'll try to get it and review this more properly. ... show more
