Description

High Quality German Filters From the Manufacturer Protect Your Lens while Reducing UV ExposureThis UV Filter blocks the invisible Ultra Violet component of light from the sky, which can cause blur and to which many color films react with a blue cast. These filters should be called UV-Blocking Filters, because there are filters for technical applications that pass UV radiation and block all the other wavelengths. Nevertheless, the short term “UV Filter” has become established among photographers. UV Filters are ideal for photography in high altitudes (in the mountains), by the sea and in regions with very clean air. The pictures gain brilliance and disturbing blue casts are avoided. Because the glass is colorless, color rendition is not altered, aside from the elimination of the unwanted blue cast, and no increase in exposure is required. That makes a UV Filter very suitable as protection of the front element of the taking lens against dust, flying sand, sea water spray and the like, and it can be kept on the lens at all times. It is recommended for analog color and black-and-white as well as digital photography.Coated to Improve Image QualityEach glass surface is vacuum coated with one layer of Anti-Reflection coating. This single layer helps to prevent internal ghosting and reflections. It also improves light transmission from approximately 92% (uncoated glass) to over 98%. Side view of F-Pro Mount. Compared to the earlier standard mount, the F-Pro mount, introduced in 2001, has become thinner. Now it can be used with wide angle lenses, including most 24mm focal lengths on a full frame body, without vignetting. Another advantage of the F-Pro mount is its modified retaining ring, which is no longer threaded in from the front, but holds the filter glass in place from the back. When removing a filter or lens hood that has been screwed on too tight to the filter, the retaining ring is not at risk of loosening.

  • fantastic filter, but overkill. You can get one with the same glass and similar coatings for half the price.
Size: 95 mm Style: F-PRO (Standard, MRC) Pattern: Haze
Top-quality UV filter. Whether or not you use UV filters is up to you. There are good arguments in favor, and against, using them. I'm not writing to encourage or discourage their use. LENS TESTED: Tamron SP 150-600mm F5-6.3 Di USD for Sony/Minolta A-mount. 95mm front filter thread. PRO: -very, very high quality. Cannot stress that enough. -brass ring rather than aluminum. Harder to overtighten (aluminum threads can strip if filters are overtightened). -very smooth and flat German optical glass. -extremely good coatings on both sides of the glass, to help reduce reflections within the lens. Also helps with cleaning, as a flat filter with these coatings can safely be wiped clean with just a dry cloth. No need for solvents or special cleaning cloth. -Comes in a wide variety of sizes, even uncommon ones like 95mm. -Brass threads are self-lubricating. Aluminum and Stainless threads are prone to galling, which makes each application and removal slightly more gritty. Brass is very resistant to galling, and is a material of choice for threaded applications. -Protects the front element of your lens from damage. -Great alternative to a lens cap: no cap blocks all dust, all caps must be removed before the lens can be used, and caps can be hard to reach with a lens hood attached. A filter solves this problem. CON: -expensive, exceedingly so. MSRP for the filter I purchased is over $300. Which is insane considering that alternatives can be as cheap as $10. -Ring is very wide and will cause vignetting on many lens designs. No matter what they say, this is not a slim filter. It is thick and chunky like they were in the 1980s. -Damage to the front element of a lens rarely impacts the image quality. Scratches and scuffs are more problematic for the reflections they cause, more than the loss of light. A black marker can be used to cover any scratches to prevent these reflections, restoring image quality. This seems counter-intuitive, but it is true. -More expensive than simply replacing the front element of many lenses! If your front element is cracked, scratched badly, or in need of replacement for some reason, the cost to replace that element is virtually always the cheapest, easiest, and quickest of any element in the stack. in many cases, the front element costs under $100, but these filters cost much more. -Not much better at lens protection than a basic lens hood. Even the most expensive lens hoods cost less than this filter. I use UV filters. But I don't tend to buy super deluxe ones like this. However, B+W are one of the few good manufacturers that make 95mm filters. If I had a good quality alternative, I would have picked that over this filter (my only alternative, at time of purchase, was a very poor quality filter). I have no regrets, but, I would hesitate to recommend this product. The ONLY argument in favor of this filter is really an argument in favor of brass filter rings over aluminum ones. Brass is less likely to get stuck. Brass turns more smoothly. Brass does not require lubrication. Aluminum is a pretty weak material and is prone to galling, which can cause unexpected problems down the road. But Brass isn't _necessary_ unless you will apply and remove the filter frequently (which is where galling comes into play). If you attach it once and leave it on, Aluminum is just as good as Brass. ... show more

  • The Coating Really Works! If time is money, paying more for this filter is worth it!
Size: 77 mm Style: F-PRO (Standard, MRC) Pattern: Haze
Background and Context: I've never given haze filters much thought in the past and have used many Hoya and Tiffen filters (obviously I'm not a professional) on my lenses for the sole purpose of protection (mostly because I have a toddler). I needed a filter for my Canon 24-105 F4/L, and Amazon recommended this filter in the "frequently bought together" section of the product description. I wasn't too sure about spending the extra money on a "magic coating" for a utilitarian haze filter, but all I can say is that I am amazed with this thing and that it is definitely worth the money (see math below for justification)! Problem Statement: I waste a lot of time cleaning my lenses/haze filters (you would too if you had a toddler)- and I still can't get them crystal clear. I also need a filter that won't distort my lens, and most of all, i need something to protect my lens from damage. Math and "Business Case": Assume you have to clean your lens once a week and it takes you 10 minutes each session (you are very thorough) on your uncoated filter. That's roughly 40 minutes a month which equates to 8 hours a year. If you paid someone at minimum wage ($8.25 if you lived in Illinois)to clean your lens, that would be ~$66.00 a year. Then let's assume you will spend 1 minute every two weeks wiping off your B+W filter- using the same calculations, your cost to clean that would be $3.30 a year. So your hypothetical potential labor savings would be about ~$62/year (assuming a non-unionized workforce)- or roughly the cost of the filter at today's amazon price. If you are looking to purchase this filter, most likely you make more than minimum wage; therefore if your time is money- this filter is definitely worth the time it gives you to do other things (such as take pictures or watching prime time network television). Evidence: The "aha moment" occurred when I took my camera to a water park for my son's birthday party; and as kids will do, they started splashing and shooting water guns at me. When I went to wipe off the lens, I was amazed that the water had actually beaded off and the filter remained relatively crystal clear- i didn't have to do anything. This never happens with my other filters as similar events would result in a long session with lens wipes/solutions, microfiber cloths, and a blower (and the filter still wouldn't be crystal clear). More Evidence: In addition, I am lazy with my cameras and the lens caps are rarely on. I just took a look at my camera and the filter is still crystal clear with no dust or smudges. I hate to sound like an infomercial but this is really amazing! OK, I've spent way too much time discussing a circular piece of glass. Bottom Line: If you hate spending a lot of time cleaning your lenses and you perceive your time as valuable, buy this filter! Cliff Notes: Pros: Crystal clear, solid quality (made in Germany like Sham Wows), and the coating really works. Will save you time. Cons: Pricier than other Haze Filters ... show more
