Description

A glorious and nostalgic celebration of a defining period in American car culture—the 1950s to the 1970s, the golden age of Detroit’s icons of the road—when automobile design was at its peak and the car itself was synonymous with a vision of success in America. Auto America offers a compelling look at three decades (the 1950s, ’60s, and ’70s) of America’s fascination with the automobile. At a time when self-driving vehicles and climate change are transforming driving around the world, John G. Zimmerman’s pictures capture the optimism and even utopianism of a beloved period in American car culture. Many of Zimmerman’s photographs were originally taken for Life, Time, and Sports Illustrated magazines and highlight diverse aspects of America’s auto industry at its zenith; they feature not only iconic cars of the era, which Zimmerman chronicled comprehensively at car shows and in studio assignments throughout the period, but also a behind-the-scenes look at the people who designed, built, collected, exhibited, and raced them. With more than 200 photographs and drawing on the John G. Zimmerman Archive’s collection—including his best-known photographs of Fords, Chryslers, and GMs in their heyday alongside ephemera, tear sheets, and outtakes from his assignments—the book celebrates the automobile’s central place in American culture during those decades when the timeless silhouettes of classic cars ruled the roads. • Title says it all
Library book. No purchase. Rizzoli, but printed in China. Ugggh. Great book, however. John G. Zimmerman, great photog and car nut with lots of inside industry experiences. His photos. For those of us who love automobiles the book truly rocks. For those who appreciate great photos the book is also very good. Might be hard for younger folks to appreciate the outsized role the automobile had in the latter part of the 20th century. Today for many cars are merely appliances or for others yet nuisances that cause myriad problems. Boomers, like me, tend to disagree. We remember the halcyon days of Detroit and model year changes. Being from Michigan also helps with that. Great book for those who truly appreciate this era and this industry. ... show more

  • A photographic pioneer
Until the arrival of this book, I was unaware of photographer John G. Zimmerman, though as I paged through I realized I was very familiar with his work. Remember the 1959 Sports Illustrated cover photo of Phil Hill sitting on his Ferrari? Zimmerman took that photo. Or perhaps you remember the photo of Henry Ford II sitting at the wheel of a 1955 Thunderbird with the company’s new board chairman, Ernie Breech, riding shotgun? Again, Zimmerman’s work. During a career that spanned most of the second half of the 21st Century, Zimmerman, who died in 2002, shot for Time, Life, Ebony, the Saturday Evening Post, and was responsible for 107 Sports Illustrated covers. He was a photographic pioneer, among the first to put cameras inside a hockey goalie’s net and above a basketball hoop, to use strobe lighting and remote-control cameras and kaleidoscopic lenses, and he created the Motion Machine that could share the sensation of speed by keeping a car in focus while the background was blurred. The book is a tribute to their parents by Linda, Greg and Darryl Zimmerman, and has an introduction that puts the images and Zimmerman’s life in context by former Sports Illustrated editor Terry McDonnell. The book shares photos of the mid-century Detroit dream cars, early car shows in Detroit and New York, images from inside automotive design studios and along assembly lines, the blaze at a GM transmission plant that at the time was the largest industrial fire in US history, cars being used to transport everyone from a mob boss to a couple of New York Yankees emerging in uniform from a cab to take part in a spring training game, a wonderful black-and-white series on used car dealerships, and shots from the race tracks. ... show more

  • A Classic beauty
I have followed Sports Illustrated for more than 50 years and knew of John Zimmerman's great work, especially for football stories and a few Swimsuit classic images. But this book is a car lovers dream - "beauty shots," racing images I didn't recall from the magazine and all kids of classic cars, tainfins and all! You really could sit with this book for hours! The title says it all" Auto America Car Culture" encompasses both great cars and slices of America's long love affair with the automobile. Great book and a great Christmas (or birthday) gift for me by my kids! ... show more
