A nice, simple tool that attaches to a drill. Works decently against even hard dirt, though the tip loses its sharp edge fairly quickly, though not that this matters too much, I've found. I would recommend putting in a little bit of water in the use-spot if the dirt you're working with is hard and dry. In any case, this is much easier than trying to dig out a deep hole with a trowel, which is great if you're planting seedlings and plugs of native grasses. After each use, be sure to wash it clean, dry it off, and coat it in some oil to keep it from rusting up. The paint *will* come off with use. ... show more

I needed to dig out under some concrete to fit a jack for breaking up my patio. This bit worked great for loosening up the soil. The spiral is made of decent thickness metal and is solidly welded to the shaft in a few spots. I abused it thoroughly as I jammed it up against the concrete several times and it held up great. The auger absolutely made tunneling under my sidewalk easier. The material it is constructed with can take a beating. I was digging through hard red clay. I know I will have more work for it in the future. TOUGH!

Used to drill holes in ground to fertilize trees. Works well but bent on about the 30th hold. Unchucked and tapped with hammer to straighten out. Lasted about 30 more holes before needing to be straightened again. Good concept - poor metallurgy. Would give a "5" if it was heat-treated properly.
