Description

Accelerator cables connect the foot pedal to either the carburetor or EFI assembly. Old cables can bind, break, or just become sluggish. The best repair is to replace the old cable with a new one. ATP accelerator cables are designed to fit and function just like the original part to ensure durability and long life.

  • Cheap feeling
Definitely not OEM quality. Very few places seem to make these, so options are limited. It isn't much cheaper than the parts store either. Quality is sub par. It does the job though for the only available company and option, outside of the junk yard.

  • The right length
Works good I would of given more stars except for the connection on the accelerator pedal does not lock in

  • MISLEADING "CAN'T SHIP TO" INSTRUCTIONS
When I was preparing to order this cable, a RED notice came up saying "this item is UNABLE TO SHIP to your default address", which is a P.O.Box address. This made no sense whatsoever to me, as the item, package and all, should be no bigger than a video-cassette. Never-the-less, I went to the trouble of providing the physical "ground" address to a business in town that allows me to have packages dropped there from time to time. Then, when I check the package tracking/shipping info to see if it has been sent --- you guessed it, they shipped it via USPS anyway and, HAD I KNOWN and not been mis-led, I could have had it shipped to my P.O.Box and avoided a lot of un-necessary inconvenience. My thoughts are that this business has grown much too large for Peter to know what Paul is doing, therefore creating a lot of un-necessary confusion. This is my 3rd order and also my 3rd foul-up --- not a good start to my online shopping experience. Now, some useful information about the accelerator cable, ATP #290 : For 1985 Ford diesel. EVERY brand/source for this supposedly exact replacement cable is 42-1/2" long. This turns out to be a generous 7-1/4" longer than the original factory length of 35-1/4". This extra length doesn't seem to hinder the smoothness of operation; but, it does make for a somewhat sloppy-looking installation, as that excess length has to go somewhere; oh well, better too much than not enough. The factory-original ball-socket end positively snaps onto the throttle-lever ball and requires firm pressure from a pry-bar to snap it off. The ball-socket on the new ATP cable is about two ball sizes bigger and literally falls onto the ball. The spring-band retainer can be rotated such that ONLY one edge retains it onto the ball. Due to this sloppy fit, it would be possible for the cable to come loose from the throttle and probably in the most inconvenient place. I intend to install a ball of larger diameter to cure this situation. The DORMAN part-number for this same application/cable is #04196 I hope this information is useful to someone. ... show more

  • Too Long For Carbureted Models
This piece seems to be just OK. Better than a broken or frozen cable, I suppose. The metal clip that keeps the cable end on the Ford linkage ball is shaped to make installation easy; the trouble is that it allows it to automatically uninstall at wide open. If you hammer the tips of the clip down, it will be sightly harder to install, but will hold onto the ball much more securely. I also used a round Dremel burr to create a better shaped pocket in the diecast connector. It will never be as secure as the factory Ford plastic connector. The real pain with this is that it's much longer than you need if you have a carb'd V8 model ('86 351 H.O., in my case). I seriously have an 6"-8" diameter loop in the cable to take up the extra slack. As far as I know, this is the only cable available for the 80-86 trucks, and I assume they made it long enough for some EFI model or perhaps the inline 300. ... show more
