I bought a new, .22 Savage Mark II TRR-SR and wanted to set it up with a decent scope for some longer range shooting. I was thinking of buying another SWFA SS scope (a well-known standard among the shooting community) and just biting the bullet (pun intended)... but then I took a look at my finances (in other words, "debt") and realized I needed to be a lot more economical. So I was considering a Vortex optic, as I've had some experience with them on friends' rifles and been impressed, but then I heard about Athlon optics, started reading up on them... and decided to be the guinea pig who tests it out for the benefit of my friends who are shooters. They really seem like they're the next competitor akin to Vortex - USA made, unquestioning warranty, and value quality/pricing. So, I leveled the scope to the rifle, bore-sighted, and finished the setup with a bipod and cheek pad. Sighting it in, the rifle tracked well and adjustments were accurate in moa per click. The clarity is impressive and compares to scopes at least a hundred dollars more, if not more. The illuminated reticle is a very nice extra touch, but optical clarity, the range of magnification and adjustability of the optic is, in my mind, the real value and selling point. The two negatives I have about this are not a major ones; simply, I wish the turrets were tactical, not capped, and the illuminated reticle was mil-dot (but the bdc is pretty great still). All in all, this is an incredibly good value of a scope and one with which I'm very, very satisfied. From my research, it seems like some people get, on occasion, duds, but if you get a normal one, it's a good one. With the warranty, it's a safe chance anyhow, and it seems like most of the units are well-made and problem free... thankfully, like mine. ***Latest Review*** I finally got to test this scope at a 100 yard indoor rifle range. I am using this on a HOWA 1500 chambered in 6.5 Creedmoor with a #2 contoured 22 inch barrel. The rifle stock is a factory, pillar bedded stock made to look like the authentic aluminum bedding block Hogue stocks. The indoor lighting was not great and I would only classify myself as only a 1/2 decent shot, but I was able to see the target very clearly at 100 yards without needing to use the illuminated reticle. Having the illuminated reticle makes it just that much more enjoyable to shoot with. With only a Caldwell 9-13 inch pivot bipod, a 6 inch Shoot-N-C sticker, a ruler, an identical background target and the Strelok Pro Ballistic calculator, I was able to get on paper, get my zero and get a Final 3 shot group with one box of 143gr Hornady ELD-X. From center-to-center of impact, my final 3 shots were exactly a 1 inch group at 100 yards. Not Bad for a low cost 6.5 Creedmoor under $400 after adding a 10-RD DBM kit. There are no sunshades for 6-24x50mm Talos (non-BTR and non-Argos) line. Athlon does not make one for this line nor can they identify known sunshades that will work with the Talos. I had to result ti gluing 3 Butler Creek Caps back-to-back-to-back which break apart due to rifle weight. Sunshades with a thread diameter of 53mm or more will not work with this scope. ***Previous Review*** I reordered the [Athlon 215013 Talos 6-24x50mm] and received a brand new version of the item. The items is very clear at near distances (10 yards) and far distances (500 yards) from 6X to 24X magnification. I have not used it at the range yet but I could not be more satisfied with a sub-$300 rifle scope out of the box. Considering that this is actually a sub-$200 rifle scope, makes the purchase even more pleasing. The side focus spacing between yardage markers is very desirable. The clarity, magnification, reticle, illumination and turrets are the best of all the sub-$300 I have seen or used. I have a Primary Arms 4-16X44mm I like but, the side focus spacing is too close, which makes focusing very difficult because a touch clockwise or counter-clockwise throws off the focus. I only wished that Athlon would provide of list of sunshades that are compatible with their riflescopes or what thread pattern and thread diameter is used in each of their products since they do not manufacture/provide sunshades. ***Relevant points from Original Review*** I like that the "Reticle Subtension Validity" is at 18X when most 'budget' 2nd focal plane (SFP) scopes only have accurate reticles for ranging at maximum power. I like that Athlon Talos' brightness illumination is done right because it doesn't wash out the image on any of the settings. Max illumination is just right for daytime with several reduced settings for lower light conditions. I hate that Athlon doesn't manufacturer sunshades at this time leaving buyers to do the "trail & error" searches. Flip caps are also not provided with the scope nor made available for purchase by Athlon Optics (Talos micrometer OD measurements: 57mm objective; 44mm eye piece). Excellent clarity, holds it's settings, solid feeling and "click" of adjustment turrets. Must pay attention not to "rack" or twist the scope between mounting rings - if mounting to two different rails (receiver, handguard), make sure the rails are absolutely in line, this scope is quite sensitive to this. I found this out mounting it to my Ruger AR-556, the eye box was very difficult to find and keep. I remounted it to my new Thompson/Center 300 Win Mag, and now it behaves as it should.     • Great Value Scope. Surprisingly Nice Glass

Put this on my AR-15 to do some medium distance shooting, and I have to say, I am pleasantly surprised at how well the scope performed. Glass was very clear out to 16x at 100 yards, and pretty clear at 24x. I’ve seen scopes 4 times the cost not do any better. I did not box test it or perform any tracking test because for me this is a zero, leave it, and know your holds kind of scope. I’m sure it won’t track as well as a SWFA SS, but the glass is just as good. I also like that it’s available in mil/mil at this price point. Drives me crazy when manufacturers put a mil reticle (which I prefer) with MOA turrets. Makes zero sense and is a pain to do the conversions live time. Only slight negative is the cheap bayonet style lens caps, but for a $200 scope, I’ll gladly buy some Bulter Creek ones and STILL have a great value. Ordering two more to have on hand. Great job Athlon. I also have the Argos BTR and that too is a fantastic product. **Update** Jan 2020- The etched glass reticle started to rotate clockwise after several months on the AR. Since it is etched, that meant the entire lens was rotating. Sent back to Athlon. Sent me a new one. Cost me $15 to return, but I have a brand new scope and I still say it's a great value even at the $15 increase due to shipping. You can get a UTG/Leapers scope for this amount and the glass is very inferior to this. ... show more
