  • best phone for electrical power outages
Style: White
This is a land line phone model which I have used for 10 years now, and I love it. Unlike many of today's phones, it gives you reliable service. It always gives you a dial tone without any hassle, just by picking up the handset from the base. The numbers light up so you can see them easily (although see note in the next paragraph for one quirk), and you can use it even during a power outage, with no batteries ever required. Simple but very effective when your electricity is not working and you need to make phone calls that don't wear out any batteries. Only 2 cons for this phone: Con #1: Its keypad lights are brighter near the center than toward the outside of the keypad. So your #5 is always the most visible number. The numbers surrounding the 5 are the next brightest. The function buttons are not very well lit, so for example, the MUTE button is difficult to find in the dark. This is a minor inconvenience for me, and as long as I can find that #5 key, I can find anything on this phone. Con #2: Don't set this near the edge of a table where it can slide off (preferably, use the wall mount instructions to make sure this phone is very secured to the wall!), because if you let it drop to the floor often, and if it lands on the corner of the phone in a certain way, then the corner plastic of the phone can break. I have owned quite a few models of this phone for different rooms of our house; the breakage does not happen very often, and it seems to happen only if you drop the phone frequently and over a long period of time. In the 2 cases where a phone case cracked from a fall to the floor, the phones had been in use for years, and it was always the corner that cracked. The phones still worked, but I had to cover the edges with duct tape until I could buy a new phone. Nowadays, I make sure to screw these to a wall securely according to the enclosed instructions, and that has solved the problem! That said, this is still the ONLY corded land line phone that I keep in our house for power outages. I love the way it feels, it doesn't slip off my shoulder easily when I'm talking, and I like the fact that no batteries are ever required for it to work. I like the way the buttons press in such a way that it reliably dials the number you wanted. Occasionally I have tried other phones but have not liked any of them as much. And a lot of the newer models of corded land line phones are built very cheap and unreliable, compared to this AT&T model I'm reviewing which I like so much. I hope this helps. ... show more

  • Not the Trimline phone I recall from years ago...
Style: Black
This phone, while sharing many components, and design elements of the Trimline phones of the 1980s, this is definately NOT your father's telephone. The good: The current 210 model Trimline phone keeps many of the look and feel components such as the shape, the buttons etc... of the old 1980s model, making it super easy to use. The backlighted buttons are super easy to use in any light conditions, and the modern almost piano black finish is a non intrusive addition to any modern home office, bedroom, dining room, or well wherever. Sound quality on this phone while hooked up to an Obi100 VOIP adapter (search here on Amazon for that), and Google voice as good, or better than the old POTS telephone service I recall from years ago. There are no confusing menus, or needless options on this thing. It's a one trick pony, but it does that trick quite well, with a few irritating issues. The bad: The Trimline from years ago had a weighted base, that kept it from sliding off of a table, desk, or counter when you picked it up. No such luck with this one. Likewise the hefty, solid plastics used on the old phone are a thing of the past. While this is well made, it is FAR less substantial than its predecessor. No shock, especially at this price point, but a very real disappointment. This lack of mass, especially in the base makes the phone a lot harder to keep in place when in use, and it can be annoying. I have not opened the base to see if possibly sandbags, or other means of weighting can be added, I hope so. The Trimline phone from years ago was also configured so that the base could be wall mounted, and the phone hung up vertically. Although the base does have the mounting holes for this function, I do not see how the handset could possibly stay in place in a vertical position. That really seems like a design oopsie to me... I am honestly not sure if it can or not, it just doesn't look like it. And I would like to add one of these to my garage as well... Aside from the minor quibbles with it, I would have to say I like this phone. It's very basic which is why you would buy a phone like this in the first place. I could point my 82 year old father in law to this thing and he would know exactly how to use it without a 15 minute orientation on how to make a phone call. There's no batteries to fail, no detachable handset to get lost, great sound quality, and a super low price. I call that a win / win situation! ***UPDATE*** On the wall mounting thing. I have stumbled upon the little nub that the handset hangs up on is able to slide up and lock into an upright position, which in my testing creates a VERY sturdy wall hung configuration. I believe I will be grabbing 3 more of these in black (for bedroom extensions) and 2 in white (kitchen and garage) and be done with my phone system. For those that want silence from the ringer, there is an off / low / high switch as well as a 3 position slider for speaker volume, and a selector switch from touch tone, to rotary pulse dialing (what systems still support rotary pulse dialing?) At this point, my only remaining issue with this phone is the lack of mass in the base. I have yet to disassemble the base on mine, but I suspect the base merely serves as a place to hang up the phone and does not provide any real electronic function. If I am correct. I will likely add some sort of ballast (epoxy and lead sinkers?) Other than that I am using the snot out of this phone, and my Obi100 VoIP adapter. (See my review of the Obi100, or the several thousand others on that thing. Awesome. Most of the issues folks have seem to be problems with Google Voice configuration... but if they bothered to watch the setup videos from Obi they would be okay...) ... show more

  • An outstanding telephone at a great value!
Style: White
Bought this telephone to replace the landline that I had hanging on the wall in my kitchen for years which had developed a problem with it and had a "humming" sound outside on it. Though I had to remove the little "hook" in the center and turn it upside down to keep the receiver on, it was worth every penny! Still have my landline phone and am happy with this new one! Bought a second in black colored also! Recommend them highly! ... show more
