This is our summary and key points to consider based on customer reviews.

The laptop in question has divided opinions among users; while some praise its speed and functionality, particularly highlighting the usefulness of the second screen, others have encountered significant quality control issues, including screen blotches, unresponsive USB ports, and problems with the pre-installed software. Some users have had positive early experiences, but have yet to test the laptop’s full capabilities, whereas another has had a difficult experience with both the product and the retailer's customer service.

Pros

  • 🚀 Extra screen is highly useful for multitasking and productivity.
  • ⚙️ Keyboard backlight and touch screen functionality work well, especially on Linux.
  • 💻 Overall high performance and speed reported by several users.
  • 🎮 Potential for gaming and design/editing work has been positively noted.

Cons

  • ❗ Some users report serious quality control issues, such as black blotches on the screen at low brightness.
  • 🔌 There have been reports of unresponsive USB ports and other hardware malfunctions.
  • 💤 Occasional problems waking from suspend or restarting in Windows.
  • 🔧 Pre-installed software, like Armoury Crate, has been unreliable for some users.

Should I Buy It?

Given the mixed reviews, buying this laptop is a gamble. If you're technically savvy and willing to work through potential software fixes and hardware quirks, its features like the second screen and robust performance may appeal to you. However, if you're looking for out-of-the-box reliability and aren't prepared to possibly engage with customer support or technical troubleshooting, it might be prudent to consider other options.

  • DO NOT BUY FROM MOBILE ADVANCE (the retailer)
The laptop arrived. Everything was fine until then… Basically mobile advance sold me for $4000 a defective item and is circumventing the refund process by expecting a consumer to receive their product test it out contact them have them refer you to the manufacturer of the laptop contact the manufacturer and email with them back-and-forth back-and-forth over a few weeks. Finally get them to send you an RM a return label so that you can ship it to their repair facility for repairs. (manufacturer is ONLY warranty repair facility) not including shipping time repairs take 7 to 10 business days… Yes, I said business, days. So once that's been done and it gets shipped back to you and still isn't working then you have to contact the seller again but by this point it has exceeded the 30 day return window that they allow, which is illogical to assume that anybody can manage to go through all of that process within that timeframe window which is how they're trying to say that they don't have to provide a refund of $4000 for the laptop I purchased… as mobile advance is a retailer for this computer companies products, they have to be under full understanding that the computer companies repair facilities in the United States, Canada and Mexico are for warranty repairs only, and do not deal with any kind of transactions for compensation or refunds or returns or anything, and they refer you for that kind of stuff to contact the retailer… As mobile advances, fully aware of this, they're just playing games with you by referring you to the manufacturer because they know that the manufacturers just gonna refer them back to the retailer but this allows them to shoo you away long enough for these 30 days to elapse (if it hasnt already happened by the time you have gone through the hoops that Mobile advance requires in order to get a replacement or refund) When I sent it in to the ASUS repair facility I quite literally wrote six pages of a word document detailing all of the things wrong with it… Everything from crashing and getting the blue screen of death 3 to 5 times a day to simple things like not being able to connect to Bluetooth or Wi-Fi or even wiggle the mouse in a circle without the whole system, freezing every five or six seconds… This laptop is completely in operable, so if you decide to buy from this retailer… Be very very careful because you may be just shelling out an abhorrent amount of money to them and basically getting nothing to show for it… Absolute worst experience that I've ever had with a retailer on the Amazon marketplace. Absolute worst… The only reason I purchased it here on the Amazon marketplace versus the manufacturers website was because my current laptop at the time had finally needed to be retired and I needed a new laptop immediately and it would've taken longer to receive it from the manufacturer then it would have coming from Amazon so I chose the quicker of the two options even though it was slightly more expensive through this method and as I am now basically out $4000 and that money is just gone and wasted… I definitely learned my lesson. OH and P.S. .... After getting the device back from the repair facility… I requested an itemized list of everything that the repair facility did… All they provided me with was a simple two sentence email saying that they reinstalled the operating system… That's it… As if I hadn't already tried that myself… In addition to them basically, doing absolutely nothing and shipping it back to me now also, the ports on the one side of the machine which are the USB-C, USDA, headphone, jack, and micro SD, card, reader, and the power port are also extremely loose and don't hold whatever's plugged into them, but the micro SD card reader port just doesn't function at all anymore... In terms of the laptops behavior, I think it's even worse now that it's come back from the manufacturing facility. So whatever you do… I heard you NOT TO BUY FROM THIS RETAILER. Their name is "MOBILE ADVANCE" UPDATE 7 MONTHS LATER: So seven months later, I'm still dealing with this issue, mobile advances, stating that they're not gonna help me because the 30 days have elapsed and the manufacturer just damaged the laptop and made it worse and now the ports on the left-hand side don't hold any of the plugs, and now Amazon is saying that they are hands off of the issue because I've made it all the way up to filing an a to Z claim which took quite a feat of strength in it of itself to get there… Just to have the Amazon representative file my A-Z claim with the wrong reason… therefore, guess what? My A-Z claim got denied… However, you are able to file an appeal within 30 days of getting your decision except for the fact that Amazon's website has absolutely no place whatsoever to file sent appeal… All of the instructions that they email you all of the directions they give you are not helpful whatsoever because the buttons that they tell you to click on do not exist on the user portal… And that's attempting to access it from both mobile iPhone, and mobile android as well as a PC computer and a Apple computer using Google Chrome, Microsoft, edge, Internet, explorer, and safari… And so I have spent countless hours even just this month I have called Amazon 22 times last Saturday. Spent the better part of seven hours on the phone with Amazon to get absolutely nothing accomplished and then to basically tell me sorry we can't help you the time window is closed even though I've spent the entire 30 days trying to figure out how to file this appeal but yet nobody is able to help me and now Amazon has resorted to hanging up on me and telling me to call back just so that the current representatives don't have to deal with me anymore. Bottom line, I'm taking mobile advance, Amazon marketplace, and Jesus international computers to court over this... In conclusion… If you decide to buy this laptop, then may the odds be ever in your favor, and good luck because you're going to need it. ... show more

  • Riddled with problems that my $300 laptops from a decade ago didn't have
Note: I've requested a refund through Amazon and haven't received a response in several weeks. Riddled with problems that my $300 laptops from a decade ago didn't have. The only thing those laptops didn't have were $3000 hardware, which is why they were slow as hell. This thing is super fast, but there's always something getting in the way. Listed below are merely a few of the issues I've had. They are not all of the issues I currently face or have ever faced. I always keep my software and firmware up to date, and yet still have this issue. Overall, my experience with this laptop in the four months I've had and used it has been horrible. The out of the box experience was outright traumatic (figuratively speaking). The only thing I couldn't get from another laptop in its category is the second screen, which I don't use as much as I thought I would given the terrible battery life. To be fair about that, I haven't ever had a laptop as powerful as this, so I can't say the battery life is particularly terrible for its category. The second screen is *the* reason I went with this laptop over several others. - Black blotches all over the screen at low brightness. When I first got the laptop, these blotches made the screen impossible to read at even half brightness, and the screen was super washed out at higher brightness levels. I had to change out of some stupid mode in their "Armoury Crate" (which itself is also garbage for several reasons) just to get it into my current partially-working state. - Speaking of the Armoury Crate -- which, like I said, is garbage for several reasons -- it died. It literally just stopped opening. Sometimes it acted like it was going to work until it flat out died. I've tried several things to get it back working, short of re-installing it. Re-installing it would probably work, but... do I want to go through the trauma of dealing with Armoury Crate anymore even if re-installing works? The Armoury Crate is a critical control to the performance and behavior of your system. It allows the user to customize their machine's hardware to their particular needs at any given time. The only reason I haven't tried reinstalling the Armoury Crate is because I was lucky enough to have had the software die *after* I had customized my settings to my most general use cases. - Half of the time -- sometimes even more often -- the keyboard lighting refuses to turn on. When it does turn on, it's always in the wrong mode, in terms of the brightness and pattern, no matter how many times I change it. This may seem like a minor issue, but its unpredictability means that I'm usually caught needing it when it's not working and not needing it when it's partially working. - The keyboard regularly and somewhat frequently does this thing where after not touching typing on the keyboard for a few seconds, when I press a key, the keyboard takes a few seconds before it repeats the key I pressed. It repeats the key very quickly until I press another key. This doesn't stop until I restart the computer, and starts again randomly after a week or so. - The USB ports regularly, though infrequently, die when I'm trying to plug something in. The device doesn't matter. It's happened on several different devices. I'll try one port, but it doesn't work, then I'll unplug a device from another port which is working so I can try it in that port, and then that one dies too. At that point, no devices work on those ports until I restart. - When I first got it, there was an obnoxious loud squealing sound coming from underneath the second screen. I don't remember how I got it to stop, but apparently it had something to do with the GPU. It was a horrible thing to deal with. - Sometimes fails to wake from suspend. - Sometimes gets stuck on "Restarting" when rebooting in Windows. - The refresh rate sometimes reduces to 60hz from selected 165hz when I close the screen and re-open it. **UPDATE** As of late 2024, I can now no longer unplug my laptop. It will crash within a couple minutes. I'm never buying anything from ASUS ever again. They are a garbage and criminal company. ... show more

  • windows sucks
The product itself, so far, is great. the extra screen is useful. I'm dual booting linux and after some driver downloads, I finally got the keyboard backlight working. touch screen on second display worked for me in Linux without anything extra. Ubuntu 20.10. Windows on the other hand... that crappy os came with the windows app store that doesn't work. I wanted to download the asus glidex (I believe it was called), but keep getting an error and can't load any individual app on the store. best I can get is the general list of apps. tried about 7 different "fixes" and nothing worked. Also, computer comes with a redeemable, free download for Dying Light 2 upon registration. I registered the product but there is no redemption of the game available. I didn't expect it, but since they offered it, it seemed like a cool thing to have and try... but no. didn't happen. Still, I'm happy with the computer itself so far but I haven't put in any real gaming hours or design/editing work with it yet. ... show more

I got this to stream D&D while away from home and so far it's been absolutely fabulous! Had to do some display adjustments since medium gray looked very patchy with low brightness, but turning on HDR fixed this issue.
