  • Weighs a lot but it's a quality motherboard...
Style: Formula (White)|DDR5|WiFi 7 Pattern: Motherboard
I've been using Asus ROG motherboards for several years when I build a computer and all have been of the highest quality, the ASUS ROG Maximus Z790 Formula is no exception! It is one of the heaviest motherboards I have ever put into a computer build but I am not complaining. I mounted the Formula into a Corsair 5000D case, so I had plenty of room, mounting the MB was easy, standoffs matched the MB screw holes perfectly. Installing the 2 M.2 2TB SSDs was easy (Samsung 2TB 990 Pro), make sure to remove all of the protective tape on the M.2 heatsinks. First SSD I forgot to remove the protective tape; second SSD I did then realized I did not remove it from the first SSD I installed so I had to go back and remove the SSD, and the protective tape. If you are wondering why I used 2, 2TB SSDs instead of one 4TB, well it was price, the 4TB cost more than 2 2TB SSDs combined. I also prefer to keep data files on the D drive and programs on the C drive. For cooling, I used a CORSAIR H150i RGB Elite Liquid CPU Cooler. Many times, the CPU cooler that mounts on top of the CPU is a bit cumbersome to mount because of there not being enough space due to the MBs design; this was not the case with this MB, cooler mounted easily with plenty of space for the water lines to route to the radiator. It's nice to have the extra PCIe 4 M.2 slots (4 total) plus one PCIe 5 slot. As I am sure the reader knows that PCIe 5 is new technology and is pretty pricey, so, because it's new tech, and pricey, I'm going to hold off on that for now. For memory, I installed 64GB of Corsair Vengeance 6400MHz DDR5 RAM. I am referencing the components I used in this build because too many people go high-end on some components and cheap on other components in the same build. If you are going to build a high-end machine and spend this kind of money, do it right, spend the extra money for the good stuff! I'm not go into all the specs of the new machine I built, but suffice it to say, it is fast!! My old machine, i9 9900K with a ROG Formula XI MB, and 2 Samsung SSD 860s, its fast but the new machine is super-fast. I copied files to a flash drive on the old machine, took about 6 minutes, I copied the same files from the flash drive to the new machine, they transferred in less than 15 seconds. That's it for now, I hope this helps others if they are considering this motherboard. ... show more

  • Top-Notch Performance with ASUS ROG Maximus Z790 Formula
Style: Formula (White)|DDR5|WiFi 7 Pattern: Motherboard
The ASUS ROG Maximus Z790 Formula motherboard is a standout choice for gamers and tech enthusiasts looking to build a high-end PC. With its advanced ROG Water-Cooling options, the board ensures optimal thermal management, maintaining excellent performance even during intense gaming sessions. It supports the latest DDR5 memory, enhancing overall speed and responsiveness. The design is both robust and aesthetically pleasing, fitting well in any custom build. While I haven’t explored all features like HybridChill yet, the experience so far has been exceptional. Highly recommend for a reliable and powerful setup! ... show more

  • Something new but neat.
Style: Hero BTF(Hidden-Connector)|DDR5|WiFi 7 Pattern: Motherboard
Bought this to build a new computer system for an upgrade. It was a little weird due to all the connection being on the backside of the computer motherboard. After the build was completed, wiring wasn't even visible on the front for a really neat look. If you like a nice clean look, I recommend this board, but the price is really high especially if you buy the ASUS Hyperion GR701 BTF case that goes with this motherboard. ... show more

  • Most expensive mobo and worse mobo I've every had
Style: Formula (White)|DDR5|WiFi 7 Pattern: Motherboard
I purchased this board ASUS ROG z790 Formula motherboard 3 times. All 3 times the defects were different with each board. 1st board The first one I had was new, freshly sealed, out of the box failure. It wouldn't post codes, train memory, or anything. Hit the power button on the motherboard itself, nothing happened. Spoke to the most computer illiterate person on the planet to try and get this fixed (ASUS support) and they said it was a defective board and to RMA it. Aw heck naw, I already know the nightmare called ASUS RMA and I'm not interested in dealing with them and being out of a motherboard for over a month. 2nd Board The second one would post, but freeze up from time to time. I had to disable the XMP profile and set it to bare bones speeds in both the CPU and the RAM. The board came overclocked as a base setting and I had to set them all to the basic of basic settings in order to get the thing to stop freezing on me. Later on, the board would cycle thru memory training when turned on over, and over, and over until it required a restart to get it to stop. 3rd board This is the current one. It can't support video out the HDMI or DP port in the mother board (and this is with a 14900K CPU that can support graphics). I had to set all the settings in the board to their lowest and slowest settings to get it to stop freezing. Then it stopped processing my monitor/TV. All my other PC monitors worked except for the TV that worked JUST FINE on my previous computer. When I plug in the TV, the other monitors go black and some won't come back with the TV plugged in. I've never had this much trouble with a product before, but of the 5 components I bought for my full networking/PC set up only 1 of them worked without an issue. ALL the other ASUS products I purchased had to be returned or replaced due to defective units. I'll NEVER buy ASUS ever again. ... show more
