  • No Way to Know if it is Ethernet Backhaul or Not
Style: Mesh System - mAX
It was not easy getting a tech support person on the phone but once I did they were extremely patient and even called me back the next day to continue troubleshooting. In the end, the router works well but I ran an ethernet cable to connect the satellite and the main router together. This is called wired or ethernet backhaul. The website and the tech guy said the units will work this way. It is better than wireless in general and most brand mesh systems can accommodate wired backhaul. BUT there is no way at all to know if the wire is working or if they are connecting wirelessly. The app does not distinguish. The units don't indicate either. You have to "trust" they are. More than a small oversight in my opinion. ... show more

  • Two ARRIS SURFboard mAX Pro W31 Form Tri-Band Mesh Wi-Fi 6 W133 System AX11000
Style: Mesh System - mAX Pro
When purchasing ARRIS SURFboard mAX Pro W133 AX11000 Mesh System, Dontrentyourmodem-com offerred a Like New options with Two ARRIS SURFboard mAX Pro W31 for $195+$8.99S/H. I didn't notice the equivalent and purchased it. Upon opening the box, I realized that it's 2 W31 standalone router. It is an AX11000 Tri-Band Router covers 3,000 SqFt, but I thought the 2 W31 requires hardwired link. I returned it. A representative of Dontrentyourmodem-com sent a msg and said his tech person said it's the same as W133. All they have is 2 W31. I read up on the W133 and W31, and I think they can be linked wirelessly via SURFboard Central App. Indeed, they can be linked and act as a mesh system covering 6,000 SqFt as follows: 1. Power up each W31 and reset it, as they are used Like New units. 2. Turn off one unit and open SURFboard Central App (I had an ARRIS SURFboard S33 Cable Modem and already registered it in the App.) 3. In the App, select Add New Device, then Select mAX Pro Mesh, Next Link the App with the W31 Router already ON and Wired to the Cable Modem, a S33 in my case, Once connected, it will checked for any software updates. This part is tricky for me. It failed, and I had to turn off the S33 cable modem and W31 several times, and additional Reset of the W31 also. Finally it connected. This is the Main Router Unit. The other W31 can act as a satellite on a different floor or location on the same floor. 4. In the App, Select Add Satellite, Turn on the 2nd W31 unit, Click Next to connect the 2nd W31 to the App via bluetooth, Next to connect the 2nd W31 to the Main Router the 1st W31Unit. Again it took several tries to connect. That's all it took. The Wi-Fi signals are strong on both floor. I have a 5,400 SqFt house. Internet service with xFinity plan 400mbps Down and 100mbps up. Attached is an internet speed test with a XDO External USB WiFi6 Adapter Model AX1830 with 1201mbps on 5GHz Band and 574mbps on 2.4GHz Band. I got 471mbps down and 11.70mbps up. Great Connection and speed. The PC in the same room with the router. The speed varies during the days, but I'm happy with any speed above 100mbps. The speed is equally great on my iPhone 12 Pro Max. Before with an ORBI 2200AC, I got around 70mbps on my same PC with an built-in Realtek 802.11n, and around 130mbps on my iPhone 12 Pro Max. The XDO AX1830 is also a Realtek USB3 adapter. I would recommend Two W31 Units as Tri-Band Mesh AX11000 System. ... show more

  • It's a great router, but it wasn't very configurable...
Style: Router - mAX Pro
This is a great piece of equipment for the casual home user, but where it failed me is in its lack of configurability. This was an on-the-fly type purchase for me. Mind you, I still did do my due diligence and researched the unit before purchase. Plus I am pretty familiar with Arris products having owned many over the years. That being said, sometimes one really needs to see the equipment in one's environment and see how it behaves and interacts with one's network. I live in an approximately 2300 sq ft home and just one of these units cranked out plenty of power to satisfy a couple of binge watching streamers, a PC gamer, a NAS networking device as well as a separate LAN and all the other ioT devices that one has around. I never encountered any bandwidth issues or dead spots throughout. Coming from an IT background I like to granularly configure network settings and while the typical setup of this router is par for the course (in fact it was a piece of cake), it lacked more advance menus dealing with routing and VLANs, it doesn't have a dedicated vpn client (a vpn server however it does have) and it lacks WPA3 latest wireless security. The plug arrangement underneath the unit for both power and LAN/WAN connectivity is very tight and awkward. There's power of course and 4 1 Gbps ports, with one being an Ethernet Aggregation Link or LAC port. I think it's only available on the WAN side and your ISP would need to assign you a second IP address if they even support the feature. It's meant for network redundancy. Also, this has the latest 6E technology, meaning it employs a 3rd bandwidth separate from 2.4 and 5 GHz, respectively, that being the 6 GHz band. This band cannot be accessed as it is reserved solely for dedicated backhaul communication between any additional satellites one connects to their network. If you don't have satellites, it goes to waste. The router also does not have any USB ports for any external device connectivity (hard drive, printer, etc...) I wanted to also tap into the 160 MHz frequency in the 5 GHz band and the router doesn't allow for the manual configuration of wireless channels because it offers a smart feature that load balances the two frequencies. One final word, while setup was a breeze you are still required to download their management software from either play store to setup the device, which some people have voiced initial trouble with. The trouble some have reported is failure of the application locating the router on their network and its subsequent setup. I really wanted to like this routerand keep it, but it wasn't meant to be. ... show more
